View Full Version : Getting past defenders.

I've been playing PES for just a few weeks. I also own TIF2002 but have not touched it since buying PES. The closeness to the real thing is what impresses me.:D

One thing that I am still confused about though is how to get past a defender when your player is say, on the wing and one on one.

In TIF2002 there is a very handy button to just knock the ball forward in mid stride while running. This lets you put the ball behind the defender and makes him turn around and race you to the ball (which you normally win).
In PES you can pass the ball manually with the right analog stick but this makes your player pause for a bit and the defender is already onto the ball.

This is a very common thing to do in real life games as it lets the attacking player use their pace against the defenders. The absolutely crap manual seems to mention double tapping the direction button to do this, however I can't get this to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions as this seems to be the only thing that TIF2002 does better?

You have to time your sprints. You aren't supposed to play the game by holding R1 24/7. In real-life, how often do such plays succeed? Almost never. U can try playin' the giggs style by tapping r1 until you're very sure you can sprint pass the defender or you can just walk up near the defender and time your sprint button. L1 can work too, but it's kinda hard to explain. Practice, my friend..

There are a few ways you can try:

1) As you are approaching the last defender, take your finger off any of the sprint buttons and walk towards him. As you get close, use R2 and left or right on the joypad to try and suddenly sprint past him.

2) As you approach the defender, slow down and when he gets close, use L1 (slow dribble) and turn your back to the defender and try to walk round him whilst defending the ball, then when you get half way round him, sprint away.

3) Use the 1-2. If you have another player in position to pass to, use the 1-2 pass and you'll often find yourself in plenty of space when the pass is returned.

The 1-2 in PES is particularly good becuase when you play the first pass, if you find that the guy you pass to is actually in a better position than the first guy, you don't need to press triangle to play the second part of the 1-2.

4)If you are running down the wing and you also have your side-back defender somewhere near behind you, you can sometimes do a 1-2 pass back to him and he will lob the return over the defender... of the above options, this is the least likely to come-off.

5)Sometimes, if the timing is just right, when you are sprinting down the wing using R1 and you approach the defender, you can simply change direction and sprint past him, leaving him for dead.

You'll need to practise these moves but they can be effective at times.

Thanks for the replies. I think I definitely need to practice the timing of runs and use the R2 and L1 buttons more.

(Paul Scholes, what a goal!)
