yes it is true it was on bbc sport news as well... apparently now they have change the rules to if one team scored in the 15 minutes of extra time the game will continue until the end of the 15 minutes if there is no scored then that team will win.. if there is then the 2nd 15 minutes will be played if no more scored then penalty...

frankly, i think that is stupid to get rid of golden goal. it made the game more exciting. remember France - Italy in the final of euro 2000? One of the more memorable endings to a game in recent memory.

The Laurent Blanc golden goal versus Paraguay at France 98 was pretty emotional too :)

yeah i agree the golden goal, is fantastic it brings the crowd into play and it also keeps the players heart rates racing. i started going for france at the start of the world cup and they have pulled 2 golden goals from nowhere that helped them in the long run. as already quoted the blanc one got them to the semi finals. and the juve 17 trezeguet's volley in the final won them the euro 2000 trophey.
we can safely say that the french have loved it the most.

I'm glad they've got rid of the golden goal. It was as much of a lottery as a penalty shootout, with the luckiest team often going through or winning the match. I think I'm going to prefer the new format much, much more.

I say keep it

Ya it's much better without that golden goal rule.

Yeah i'm glad they got rid of it, i hope they'll do the same thing for the wc, it's damn too frustrating for the other team when a golden goal happens...and usually the best moments in a knockout match is when a team tries by all means to get the equalizer (imagine italy all-out attack against france in the ec final ? it would have been excellent !)

btw that new rule is a bit stupid, i think they should have come back to the good old rule (and i also think they should change the penaty shootouts to hockey-style shootouts)

=> little quote about the golden goal :
What can be changed: There won't be no more 'Match of the century'-matches, matches that build legends, like the Italy- Germany semi-final of 1970 (2-1 instead of 4-3 then) or Germany France in 1982. The 1966 finals would be as controversy as anything you can imagine and don't think there won't be goals among that golden ones that won't be controversial and leave the bitter taste of irregularity behind. If there's still time to answer, it won't be such bad feelings afterwards.

Get rid of that rule as soon as possible, FIFA!

hockey-style? sounds like the old MLS Shootouts; miserable failure

I also think they should have gone back to the old rule.

But hockey penalties??? Nah... That's just not football...

I think we should have extra time till one team finishes one ahead.. (or maybe one team dies of fatigue or smt.. :P)

Exactly. I would much rather it the other way. Just like in CM 01/02.:)

I like the golden goal rule. It promotes attacking football and it is exciting to watch.

I didn't like the golden goal rule, because the best team didn't always win.

but it was still good because normally the team that was willing to take chanced won during the Golden Goal period.

Personally, I don't like the golden goal rule, usually the weak team play so defensively, so they can make it in to dramatic penalties-shootout. This is not really a good soccer match to watch. I'm glad UEFA will eliminate this rule by next season.
Cool..:p
