I've seen Chessmaster & its great. i also heard of Fritz. So which one is the best? I want the a good computer playing strength & good tutorials to teach me how to play. The reason for this is that in Chessmaster 9000 Josh Waitzkin annotated (this is oral - with sound and pieces move and show different variations) about 15 games. You can listen to these many times and learn something new each time. Especially if you do not have time to go through a book, you can often pick up bits and pieces from his games that you will eventually put to use. Chessmaster also offers other annotated games, as well as all sorts of drills, and allows you to practice your end game and openings. It is a very good and simple to use program with all sorts of things to learn from. It has a very good analysis system that also delivers oral results to you and will help you improve your play greatly. Probably you will want to play on the internet and then analyze your games with Chessmaster. I play at FICS, the most popular free internet chess server. I would prefer to be playing at ICC, but the cost for students is $25 a year. The level there and options are much greater however. You should play on FICS because it is free and you will get the same result. Register at the FICS website and download the BabasChess client which is a superbly made program and it is, of course, free. Play standard 15 minute+ games or else you won't really learn very much, in my opinion anyway, but all games you play will help you. You have to play a lot and eventually you will move up a level...play more and you move up. If you want we can organize a SoccerGaming Chess League!
