Should the Golden Goal rule be removed in favour of the FA Cup 'Extra Time' Rule? in which if one team scores... the game does not end until the end of Extra Time (which gives the other team a chance of scoring)

Larry 27-04-2002, 07:25:PM I say keep it. I like it INFESTA 28-04-2002, 12:17:AM Replace it with the FA Cup rule. Hopefully they'll hange it in the next season. Ubik Valis 28-04-2002, 08:50:AM I say change it to the old way....with 2x15 mins....-. Internazionale 30-04-2002, 10:55:AM Old rule seems more appropriate. 2x15 minutes...then penalties-shootout. bloke 30-04-2002, 12:22:PM I don't know which is better than the other. They introduced the golden goal rule a few years ago because they felt like a lot of teams get robbed in the penalty shootout. Internationally it was introduced at EURO 96. I'll give you a disadvantage example. At USA 94 they were using the 2x15 method. My country Romania played Sweden in the quarter fnals of the World Cup. We played a great match against Sweden and it ended in a 1-1 draw. Then the match went to 2x15 and Romania scored to go 2-1 in front. At this point we would have won if it was on the Golden Goal rule. But it wasn't. Sweden equalised after a few minutes and it was 2-2. Then the match went to penalties and Sweden beat us 4-3. No disrespect to Sweden. They are a great team. I'm just saying that we would have won if it was played with the Golden Goal rule. It is things like these in other matches as well that led to the Golden Goal rule. I'm not saying it is really a good one though. smoke8989 30-04-2002, 08:05:PM i'll go with the extra time rule monkee 01-05-2002, 12:11:AM Bloke, I hear what you're saying but I think that the Golden Goal rule is more of a lottery than penalties. One lucky break or unlucky break (view Liverpool vs Alaves UEFA cup last season) and that's it, regardless of who the better team was. I disagree with anyone that says it encourages attacking football because I think that any team that thinks 'one goal and we're out' are more likely to stick 11 men behind the ball and hope for a lucky break, and wait for penalties that are safer. The better team should win after an extra half an hour. If there's no winner then the teams are equally as good/bad and penalties are then the best option there is. maddog1983 01-05-2002, 12:11:AM 2 by 15 halves ... then penalties |
