Of course not. This is so dumb. We don't need 100m to improve our squad. We need a good defender. The thing is that Fergie should go. After 15 years or so it's time for him to leave ManUtd. The facts are quite simple this season, we only have one chance of a real prize, the CL, if it wasn't for Van NIstelrooij we'd have dramatic season. After this summer's spending spree you can say that ours season is a bit of a failure unless we win the CL. Ferguson has become a bit arrogant, I mean selling Stam and replacing him with Blanc was the dumbest thing in the history of mankind. I also think that Ferguson isn't a tactical genius, he's a great motivator, no doubt about that, but he hasn't got the same tactical mind as an Ottmar Hitzfeld or Louis van Gaal. If you look at Manchester United, they don't play with the same flair and attitude like they did in the 98-99 season. They've become a bit robotic, only Beckham and Giggs are able to bring some flair. ManUtd should get a defender next season, and a new manager who starts playing Real Madrid like, not so static and robotic. I really favour Eriksson/Grip or Capello or so. Unfortunately that's not going to happen, so we'll just have to go with the current style for a few years.
monkee 01-05-2002, 01:38:AM Time for Ferguson to leave Man Utd!!! Not tactically aware!!! One season where we might not get a trophy and this is what happens! Ferguson should stay on, since he's decided to stay Man Utd have become markedly better.
Blanc has improved as the season has progressed and I'd say he's performing very, very well now. (hopefully I've not jinxed him tonight). When Stam came he seemed lost at the back, then, given time to settle we know how he performed. If Man Utd get a new defender this summer (which I hope they will) I doubt that he will settle in immediately, it never happens with defenders.
I think Ferguson made the right decision in selling Stam now. Considering his ban, and some of the comments made in his book were never going to keep a good team spirit.

Ok fair enough, ManUtd did start to play better when Fergie annouced that he was going to stay on, true. But still I wouldn't mind if a new manager came in within the next two seasons. I'm not criticizing Ferguson, he's done great, magnificent I'd say, but I feel that the time is right for a change. Blanc has done well, I've always defended him, but he is simply not on the same level as Stam. And I'm staying with my point that Ferguson isn't the greatest of tactical geniuses.
man united forever 01-05-2002, 11:33:AM I think you're stuck in the wrong season, mate. We were robotic last season, but some of our play this season has been magnificent. Remember the second half against Tottenham at White Hart Lane? That's free flowing football at its very best.
If it wasn' t for Ferguson's tactical knowledge, we would probably not have beaten Deportivo in the Riazor.
Becksdrg 01-05-2002, 11:46:AM Frankly, what manchester united should do is go after kevin Hofland from PSV. a Good young central defender who actually WANTS to play for Manchester. i didnt like blanc all year. He made too many mistakes that lead to crucial goals. sure, he improved during the year, but he is still not as good as he was last year, playing in Serie A.
Plus, i am not worried about their attackers. Forlan will be a huge plus next year.
solidify the back, and find a replacement of Barthez, cause i am not sure Carroll is it.
man united forever 01-05-2002, 11:50:AM Bring in Buffon and Thuram!

riiight.......
genesis 01-05-2002, 12:52:PM I would say Sir Alex might be tactically wronged in both legs, he used 4-4-1-1 which he didn't use in Premiership recently, it made United more predictable and less offensive.
I hope after this lesson, he would realize that the defence and the new formation are the problems that make Man U likely empty-handed this season.
Champions League final will be played in Old Trafford next season (if I'm not wrong), it would be no other reasons better than this for Man U to fight for it.
Good luck the Devils
playmate 01-05-2002, 01:16:PM The 4-4-1-1 formation was not right acc. to many and i share the view. Fergie too could see that, there's no reason why he couldn't. But i don't really know why he stuck with it? Is it a ego thing, trying to show who the boss is? Don't know if it is that coz no manager would sacrifice cup glory 4 such a stupid thing. I believe Fergie did what he thought was best for the team but i can't fathom how he thought that way!

I think he keeps on using it because it gives the defence more cover. They've got a five man midfield in front of them. Against Leverkusen last night you coould see that Keane was simply playing in front of the defence and behind the midfield.
monkee 01-05-2002, 11:56:PM Not sure about the tactics last night. I saw 4-5-1 (4-4-1-1, whatever it was) and thought we aren't going to win this one now.
Way too many players in the middle of the field.
Maybe a coincidence Man Utd improved when we switched to 4-4-2, but it was late in the game and we needed to press forward.
Anyway, it's easy to criticize after a display like we had against Leverkusen over 2 legs. The team that played best won in the end, and they did have a lot of luck, both goals had an element of luck, but 3 goal line clearences in one game!!! A **** referee to boot (for both teams).
Hopefully Leverkusen can win now. :)
ricardo 02-05-2002, 07:38:AM change stam and nesta for veron :)
genesis 03-05-2002, 06:05:AM Selling Veron might good for United and Veron himself. Veron is a talented and gifted player, but his style is not suit to English league. It is a pity.
United really need to tidy up and strengthen their defence system, bring in Hofland or Nesta or Thuram will be a healthy move, rather than bring in more midfielders to make the midfield congested.
4-4-2 is good for United and players, it proved in the previous seasons.
Maybe this is not the United year, but if the defence problem can be solved, United will be more successful in home(England) or Europe.
