View Full Version : Cycling
I say everyone come here, and post their favourite bike rider for Track and Road. My favourite Track rider is Mark Renshaw, because Im good mates with him, and basically he is the only Australian to get a Commonwealth games qualifying time for the 1k time trial, but isnt riding it, because hes riding enduro therer(he also our best Points Racer, Scratch Racer and whatever else he decides to ride, yet hes 19).
And Road, I like Big Jan Ullrich. As Lance Armstong said, hes the most talented cyclist in the world... Also since im speaking of as <INSERT NAME HERE> said's as Florian Rouseau (sorry to any french people if o spelt that wrong!), said to Mark Renshaw when Mark told him he was going Enduro, after winning the overall Kilo World Cup last year..."U F(_)CKIN IDIOT!"

ZePenguin 17-05-2002, 09:33:AM I'm astonished there is at least one people who likes cycling here...wonder if there are others...
I like cycling too, though i don't know anything about track, only road and cross. I really like amstrong, especially because how he came back of his cancer...otherwise talking about wc classics riders, my fav is johan museeuw (well i'm belgian so it's quite logical :p ), and i was like this :  when i saw how he won this years Paris-Roubaix ...
And do you ride too ? I do, well not really often though, but 2years ago i used to ride 100 km or something every sunday morning, now i'm too lazy to wake up :D
INFESTA 17-05-2002, 02:01:PM I love cycling! I never thought there would be other fans of this amazing sport!
Here's the question: is there any more physically demanding sport than this? I don't think so.
Ullrich is a sod, you know. The guy's so talented and he wastes everything because he's too lazy to practice during the holidays. That's why he only performs well in the last days of the competitions...when he's already 20 minutes behind the overall leader...
My fave is, by far, "Il Pirata" - Marco Pantani. Ok, he might be a druggie, but so are all the others (starting with Armstrong).
It's a shame there isn't a single internationally renowned portuguese biker. :( Well, Once's José Azevedo finished 5th in last years "Giro". We'll see how he'll do in the "tour".
ZePenguin 17-05-2002, 02:11:PM Hum yeah i like pantani too, he's excellent (i loved the stage when he took 15 mins to ullrich when he win the tour)...but since the giro 'affair' he didn't do much...i wonder what he'll do this year...
btw for the anecdote every year i go on holiday in his home town (cesenatico), so everyone there is for mad about him during the tour :) quite awesome ambiance :)
johan museeuw is fricking awesome! I love him! One of my favourites. Hey guys look out for an aussie called Cadel Evans. Used to ride mountain bikes(won a few world cups and stuff), now rides road, and hes still young. Currenlty coming 9th in the Giro. He will be good, Australias best chance of an Overall France victory ever (not yet, in a few years).
As for Pantani, pfft, 'sif. Everyone says people in cycling are drugos. They are not! Pantani is.
Cycling has the drug reputation because lots of people get caught. This is because they have the most technically advanced, and Largest drug testing in any sport. Armstong isnt on drugs. Im not a fan, but i admit hes not on drugs. He just puts HEAPS of effort into it.
Also when Pantani beat Ullrich that day, there was heaps of luck involved, and that stage cost him the Tour i think. But he got a flat, and all sorts of things that stage. Unlucky, shoulda been his second tour.
If any of u guys are paying attention to the giro, A young aussie sprinter called Graeme Brown, is going very well in his first season as full pro. Look for his results in the giro sprints. Anyway, his sister, is Mark Renshaw's (the 19 year old freakish Track rider i was speaking of earlier) girlfriend. Also Mark will, i think be one of the best Road Sprinters to EVER come out of Australia when he gets a bit older. He has beaten Brown in a few Road Sprints, and is a couple of years younger. U have to believe me when I say this guy IS good. Anyone that knows anything about Track, knows that in a fairly strong track cycling nation like australia, to be able to win the Points Race(an enduro event), madison (enduro, with team mate), Kilo (Sprint Time Trial sorta thing), Scratch (enduro), come second in the pursuit(after pulling out of the final, with the kilo being in the programme as the next event), win the teams pursuit, and win the team sprint, all at the National Championships. as i said awesome rider...btw he got rider of the national series..haha who would have guessed. But it seems hes going to road now. He was also a Triple World Junior Champion, in 2000 and 2001.
I was talking to him in msn the other day, and he is currently over in europe on a scholarship with La Francais Des Jeux, to race for 2 months and try to earn a contract. Its funny, Francais Des Jeux were giving out 5 to australians, and 2 of them are my mates, and form my small city with a population of 30000!
hmm anyway thats all, im boring u by now..;)
Cheers

INFESTA 18-05-2002, 01:43:AM They ALL take drugs. It's sad but true. Not only in cycling, don't get me wrong, but they do.
http://sport.guardian.co.uk/cycling/story/0,10482,617284,00.html
http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sport/tour_de_france/newsid_397000/397095.stm -> do you know Christophe Bassons
"Armstrong is not on the long list of cyclists alleged to have been supplied by Ferrari" did u read the article. Theyre trying to make something out of nothing. the europeans dont like a non-european winning the tour.
As i said, cycling drugs are over rated, because they publicly disgrace those who do it, unlike other sports, who try and hide it and uphold the sports reputation.
Cycling has THE most active anti-doping policies in World Sport. its a fact. Theyre testing is the most stringent etc
Anyway enough of this...so how good is Mark Renshaw :p
ZePenguin 18-05-2002, 02:52:AM Yeah i don't think they're all druggies, there are some, but not everybody...
About australians, i think robbie McEwen is a damn good sprinter :)
yep, robbie would be a serious contender for the Tour Green jersey, EXCEPT, he only ever sprints for first, and he doesnt have enough heart in the sprint it seems. O'Grady gets there thru constantly putting in 200%. If McKewen isnt going to win, it seems he doesnt bother. I have always rated him as one of the best sprinters though. He's better then steels imho (although as a belgian, u probably disagree), and atm is right up there with Cipo.
I havent seen Zabel race this year, so cant say.
I think this year, it will be a 3 way battle for green in the tour. O'Grady (theyve found out the last two years, hes been racing injured, meanwhile last year he nearly won green!!), McKewen and of course Zabel. Im assuming steels, and cippo wont finish, or if steels does, he'll die (not literally!) in the 2nd week..
Cheers

Yeah but steels is in bad form since a long time because he got
2 mononucleosis (i got a friend who once got that, and it's horrible, you sleep 20h a day and it lasts for months). I hope he'll get back in shape soon, he won a race the other day at the 4 days of dunkerque, and he seemed extremely happy to win a race again, which is great for him...
And for cipollini, i don't like him, he always starts tours to win stages, and he never tries to finish the tour, that's why i have more respect for guys like zabel or steels who always finish their tour, even if they finish 1 h behind in the mountain stages...

Apparently, you read the article but missed the whole point. If my doctor, whom I've sustained all along is as clean as I am, is convicted for giving drugs to other cyclists, then I will have a lot to explain. Who would believe that he handed those drugs to the others and not to me as well?
the europeans dont like a non-european winning the tour.
This remark is totally unacceptable. A poor excuse, in my opinion. I loved Greg Lemonde, btw.
On the other article point out Bassons' statement. Come on, the guy was told to shut up by his OWN team.
I know for a FACT that FC Porto players take drugs. Real drugs. It's a strong accusation, I know, but they do. The same person that told this, also said that every single club with a strong medical department do the same.
If you believe it or not, if you close your eyes and fool yourselves, I guess that's your problem.
I'm surprised about ZePenguin's response, because he comes from a small country too, and the thing about them is that you end up knowing everything and everyone.

yes, but other people he has supplied his drugs to have been caught. Now why has Armstrong, the most drug tested Cyclist in the world, not been caught, when his supplier os obviousley giving drugs which can be caught? Im sticking to my view that too many Europeans have a prejudice against Armstrong, they dont like a non-european winning big races, and are looking for excuses. He also refuses to learn French, and this makes the French media more annoyed by him. I know for a fact, that not all cyclists are on drugs. Mark is a great mate of mine, and we have often talked about it. All he takes is creatine, which is a perfectly legel supplement.

I really don't think there's anything against Lance just because he's a non-european. Don't you remember Greg LeMonde getting all the media support. And remember that Laurent Fignon was French.
hmmm
I think i got the armstong thing backwards..i was in a hurry this morning.....it isnt that he doesnt learn french (i think he knows it, but not as well as others), its just that he usually refuses to speak it, which annoys the media during the tour.
I dont know why everyone seems to be trying to knock the man back, he is a full on champion (and ive said before im not a big fan, I go for Jan, who is the Best rider out there), but u cant take it away from Lance, until he tests postive. Believe me, bike riders get tested so much, and so thoroughly that he would be caught by now if he was doping.

haha...the stupid Australian Media were saying O'grady had a chance in the last tour, when he got in the break away, when he already had the yellow, and it put him about 30mins infront of everyone..
no one here has a clue about it..

Mirun 22-05-2002, 10:52:AM Wooow guys!!!
I spotted this 'Other Sports' thread couple of days ago when there was only some stuff about NBA there (BTW i love b-ball). But it wasn't untill today when I had this thought to start a thread about cycling. I was afraid if I get any response from the members but I thought ' what tha heck, I will have a go. maybe one single tiny response from one of 5,000 members' :) . So I entered the sub-forum for the second time since it was created and what I saw...... couple of guys having a chat about cycling..... kool
I am being honest now - cycling is my greatest passion of all (I love soccer, but cycling is simply exorbitantly awesome - if it is possible to be put that way....I thing u got the idea). Soccer was my #1, but then CYCLING came...... I got drowned in this one..
I love both watching it on TV and practising. And IT IS DEMANDING!! The only event that is more exhausting IMO is ironman triatlon(it includes swimming, which always drains the most energy out of my body and of course it contains cycling as well).
I am not sure who my favourite rider is but I guess it has to be one of the Polish riders....mmmmm... :monkey: ..... I'll go for Wadecki - Museeuw's teammate in Domo (recently injured, damaged his skull in Tirreno Adriatico..uuuhhh that must've hurt).
I also like Raimondas Rumsas (rides for lampre this year). He also has perpetual problems with injuries, but believe me - he is skilled.
Infesta: I love the team Maia Milanesa MSS (spelling) from Portugal - they have couple of useful riders: Moller, Jekker, Lavarinhas, 2*Silva, Edo. I always play them in my Cycling Manager (BTW a great game, the sequel is coming in June).
EPO & stuff
It is sad that this beautiful sport has so bad reputation, but sadly, riders do take those banned drugs.... I just hope that Lance is clean, cause he seems to be a role model for many people, especialy those who suffered from cancer (just as I did BTW).... I would be bitterly dissapointed if it turned out that he is just another dirty cheat.
I've been following the GIRO closely couresty of eurosport and cyclingnews.com and I am dissapointed with Garzelli. I like this rider and I was his supporter when he was going for the Giro'2000 glory. But it is hard to believe in the 'spiked drink' theory.
I hope that Cadel Evans will take over as Mapei leader and will prove that remarks about his great talent are more than just the small-talk and that his is a great character (I've admired him ever since he was a MTB newbie). I know that he has little chances of claiming the overall win in the Giro because of his average TT skills (I hope he improves on that). He is great anyway. One may find out more about him by reading his diary on cyclingnews.com.
sKIip_E: I am interested in road cycling almost exclusively cause Poland has only one quality track rider. Grzegorz Krejner that is. And the MTB - don't even mention......Marek Galinski has some potential but he is not a world class rider.
I am glad that there are guys interested in cycling and I am prepared to join the discussion.

Ahah, I'm surprised you even know them! Maia is the town where I live, so I've seen the boys practising a couple of times.:)

Woow man! It would be great if I had a procycling team in my hometown. I would do some reckoning job and then would wait for them couple of hours and then out of the blue I would appear and try to suck to their back wheel. I am sure I could keep the pace of the pro riders for some 100 meters or so.... :D
Pasta in fact is a very important part of rider's diet. This explains Maia's last season's performances (Moller was great in the Vuelta, Jekker and Edo earlier that season):)
As for Cycling Manager, I gotta say that this game has captured my mind for couple of months. it is great especially when played over the network with other cycling freaks. It was released by Cyanide software. The AI isn't that good (that's why it is better to play in multiplayer mode) it is acceptable though. They even have a small forum on their homepage (try google since i don't remember the url) but some guys there act fuc*ing cycling Einstains, it is damn annoying so I posted there some 2 or 3 times.
where you can get it??? try some on-line shops or take a walk on the wild side ... but my lips are sealed:cool: (you know...people get banned on this forum for talkin those things) i remeber one the thread in which some guy posted the pic of the content of his hard drive and got banned....muahahaha.....sorryy

I wasn't asking for a link, man, relax! :) Just wondering, because I've never heard of that game before.
Anyway, their official site is www.cycling-manager2.com and there's already a demo. I dld it but didn't work.:mambo:
About Maia's team, it's hard to explain why I haven't done precisely what you were talking about. I guess when you live near them, they end up being part of your routine.
Btw, check out Once's Azevedo. I expect great things from him, especially after his performance in the Giro last year. Besides, he's a great, great guy. Very down to earth and humble. You should see where he lives.
Kind of reminds me of how unfair the sporting world can be. There you have, a cycling pro, busting his a$$ all his life, while some 18yo kids, that happen to kick a football quite reasonably, are getting paid almost 10 times better than him...:(

Yeah, Id say Cadel will take over the Mapei leadership, hes certainly got the talent. As for his "average time trial skills", although he isnt Ullrich, or Armstrong standard in a TT, he is still an above average Time Trialer. I have to agree though, he needs to improve in this area if he want to win a major tour. (BTW. he won the Tour of Austria last year). However, remember he is only new to road, and still young, so Im sure his time trialing will improve heaps one he spends a bit of time on a road bike. Remember though, u dont have to be the best time trialer to win a big tour...Marco Pantani anyone??

Mirun 23-05-2002, 11:25:PM Hi INFESTA,
This is the link to "working" demo of CM2 (I've tried it):
it will not give u any idea about the management part, though - (which BTW was improved since CM1) (http://www.cyanide-studio.com/downloads/CyclingManager2Demo.exe)
It will pi*s you of as Armstrong always comes first, unless you really learned how to play.:)
skip_E: yeah I remember Pantani winnig the Tour de France'98.
BTW I hope for a good battle between Casagrande, Evans, Hamilton and whoever else able to stay within a shout. Today's stage looks promising....:)

I as a bit disappointed ith Cadel's performance on thursday. He wasn't able to keep the pace of the big guns and so wasn't Hamilton. I hope they bounce back during today's mountain stage.

hehe, 1st and 2nd in the TT stage. Who said Cadel couldnt TT!
I hope Cadel wins overall, Australian cycling really needs someone to boost its popularity. The only coverage we get on TV each year, is a couple of local events, and le tour de france. I think maybe if Cadel won, then people would stand up and say "hey this sport is pretty cool" During the tour, we get a fair few casual watchers, so i think if we had an overall chance, then maybe we'd get more.

I've seen the stage. Great win for Cuapio too.
Cadel will have to attack on the final climb tommorow, 'cause the 20 sec. he has got in hand (over Hamilton) is not enough for the final TT (although I was wrong calling Cadel an average TT rider:))
I just hope Frigo doesn't win the whole race...
And Casagrande is a real bastard..... check it out (http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/?id=2002/may02/may29news)
yep, cadel will need to get a bit on hamilton in the next hill stage i think, but i think he will, cos it finishes with a climb tomorrow, and no desent, which cadel isnt as good at. Also, about the Time Trial thing, Cadel actually got third in the Junior Worlds for the Time Trial about 6 years ago, when he was still a MTBer, so yeah he can definatley do it. But he will need some more start over Hamilton.
However, after todays stage, I really think Tyler will be striggling tomorrow. I don think he enjoyed it. Plus Cadel will have the confidence of wearing the pink.

oh yeah, ive made a prediction.
Cadel will be the next tour de france winner
I dont mean he will win the next tour, but he will be the next rider, that hasnt won a tour de france, to win one.
Thats my opinion, i dunno when itll happen. Lance will easily win this year (pity Ullrich was lookin great, till his knees went), and then he may win again next year, or maybe Jan Ullrich will. Either way, i dont think anyone else will next year. And then the year after, or maybe next year, u never know, cadel will win.
Go Cadel! Finally an aussie going well on GC!
hmmm, now ive just goto wait for McGee to turn into a genuine Tour winner, and not just a mixture between a stage racer, a sprinter, and a time trialer. Hey if he can do those 3 things, and isnt a mug in the hills, he has potential.

I am positve that he can win the Tour next year. I also hope that he will take part in this year's edition so that we have an indication of 'where he is' when compared with Armstrong. I am sure he will not recover quickly enough after the 3 weeks of the Giro but it would be interesting to see him ride in France.
Actually I've never noticed how tall Cadel is! It was difficult to compare him with other riders when he used to ride MTB, but now when he is out there with guys like Cuapio, Frigo or Gotti I can clearly see the difference. He is not one of those tiny climbers, and he also has an unique riding position when he is climbing that is why it is easy to spot him in the bunch (or what left of it on the hill).
To finish this one off - Go Cuapio! (I do hope that little Mexican can ride for a better team next season so we could see him more often in big races)

Its not juts Merckx's record, remember 4 other riders have won it 5 times. Just Merckx could have won it more, if it wasnt for the controversy (in 74 i think), and if his coach let him ride it earlier in his career.

well maybe next year for Cadel hey?
I read an article on it, and his coach said, the Cadel isnt ready to win a major 3week tour, and of course he wasnt training to win this, but win the Tour of Rumandie (spelling??). So lets hope it happens next year... The same article (http://www.cyclingnews.com/road/2002/giro02/?id=results/stage17) also said that Savoldelli told RAI-TV when speaking of Cadel; "I am in my 6th Giro and I've ridden 3 Tours de France; even though Evans had a bad day today, he's done great things in this Giro."
So hes definatley one to watch in the future.
Hey its his first big tour, and also his first full season of road racing. Expect big things from the young man from Adelaide.
Cheers

Mirun 02-06-2002, 12:05:PM These words by Savoldelli indicate that he is a true champion. He was a promising youngster some years back, but I thought his second place in Giro'99 was the peak of his abilities. I am glad to see him on top, even though before the race I didn't think he was a real contender for the overall win. I have a lot of appreciation for his modesty and the way he thinks about his opponents.
As for Cadel, I guess that his time is still to come. He has made a great progress this year and I think that his transition from an MTB rider is definitely completed. There's still some room for improvement I suppose.
