Hugo suggested it, I'm following it up..the idea really fetched me.

Post an interesting piece of info about your country's history here!

I hope this leads to some interesting discussion and intellectual benefit for all!!

Well, I'd like to start where it all began for Australia: Over 40000 years ago, the Aboriginals came to our land. They lived here in harmony with the enivronment for 38800 of these years. Then, in 1788, Captain James Cook landed at Botany Bay and declared the country to be Terra Nullius - empty land, and fit for taking by the Crown. This started a reign of injustice towards our indigenous people, from when Batman purchased the land I now stand upon for some petty western items. Hundreds of square km for a few paltry bits and pieces. This went through to the 20th century, with our White Australia policy seeing Aboriginal children ripped from their families and deposited to white Anglo-Saxon families in order to re-educate them in a white sense. We only gave them recognition as human beings in 1967 when we voted to give Aborigines the vote - even then it was done patronisingly, we saw them as our children being let out into the wide world . And still today, our government won't acknowledge the Stolen Generation, as they are now called, for fear of economic ramifications.

Hopefully the history you share is happier than mine.

Erm....lemme see...Croatia's history...basically we were possesed by different powers, from the Romans, to Austria-Hungary, and unfortunately some fu**ing fascist took the power by a "coup" (spelling?! :() and co-operated with Adolf and Benito...we were then part of Tito's "Yugoslavia" and finally got our independence in the start of the 1990's, which led to Slobodan Milosevic and his sick companions killing alot of innocent people...i guess the story of Croatia ain't that interesting since it's full of wars and injustice....:(

hmm let me see, a long tme ago there was a civilisation called daci, they lived in central and eastern europe, two of theyr important leader were Decebal and Burebista, the first one fought against the romans lead by Traian. after 2 wars in 104-105 and 106 they were conquered by the romans, that ruled these teritories until 273. so you can say that we are descendents of the roman empire :D not f#kin gypsies or other s#it like hungarians like to say...(the romanian language is a latin one, more than 80% of the words come from the latin one).

as from the 10 century romania had a lot to suffer because of the turkish or otoman empire, austro-hungarian empier and the CCCP, because the country lost many teritories that were never recovered like the so called country Moldova that was actualy one of the most important provinces of the country:mad:

between the two world wars romania was one of the most developed country in this part of europe(not what I can say in the present time) but it all ended when the comunists came and destroyed everithing that was achived until then...

long story huh?:D , and sorry for my bad english:)

hmm...
well way back when (a few hundred years ago), England, France (Spain and a few other countries but they were pushovers in the battles/wars so we won't count them) had many colonize across present day USA and Canada.

The USA pretty much separated from both and became the USA.

Canada meanwhile was had two growing halves (french and english) both fuelling the motherland back home with the natural resources (fur trading was the big deal).
As the colonies grew, tension back home and in Canada grew as well. The english beat the french in the final of many battles.
This left about 60,000 french civilians. The english being their kind selves :p let them stay (present day province of quebec).

There were also civil wars during the USA's and our formations involving the loyalists (to england) and the seperatists. Basically the loyalists (english) won, and all the rebels to the motherland g were sent trekking to the USA and Canada remained an english colony.

USA tried to take over canada again, we won the war again.

A small group of pissed off Canadians invaded the USA and burnt down a wing of the whitehouse. Then went back to Canada, unscathed. :p
Something tells me that will never happen again!

We only fully gained our independence about 20 years ago. Though we've been a country for like 135 or something.

I don't think I explained that well at all. Oh well.

To a Canadian though, it pretty much goes:
played hockey
beat the frenchies
played hockey
beat the yanks
played hockey

I study 20th Century History . . I know hardley anything about my country's history, mainly cause its a tad boring unlike other countries, and the funny things is that about 90% of what I'll be learning is about war, not sport or fun . . War.

Although its quite interesting if u'r into it ;) Damn good stories come out of it . . books and all on wars are interesting . . .

yeah so I haven't much more to say . . .

Yeah Grassy, 20th century I find a lot more interesting than older history, I'm doing French Revolution ATM, I'm looking forward to when we hit Russian Revolution since I don't know a great deal about Lenin and Rasputin and all that, I only know the names rather than their significance.

I found WWII and Cold War to be the two most interesting topics I have studied in school.

I am doing russian revolution at the moment, and its way cool. However from what I have read and heard about Hitler, and then what I have heard about Stalin . . I am not sure who really was the worst . . they were both brutal men.

Did ya know Hitler was beaten when he was a child by his dad, and his mother was the opposite?

damn the stuff I could go on about here . . . anyone interested in a history lesson?

last year i wanted to do 20th Century history but the school didn't run it so i did Australian History...sooooooooooooooooooo very boring, its only about politics, Aborigines and Communists.

it wasn't very interesting cause nothing really happened in Australian history.

Although writing all those huge 1000 word essays helped with the way i wrote an essay, our teacher was only good at that, otherwise she couldn't teach at all.

my cisco (networking course, v hard) is the same, he just sits up the front on his fat *** and fiddles with his laptop, and we have read pages of **** and he teaches up nitun and he's totally a slacker.

I personally hate him

anyway . . Stalin was as brutal as Hitler . . he had "secret police" just like Hitler. But what I am gonna mention takes the cake, Hitler actually had "perfect children" bread for him, they were custom made children built to serve Hitler I think in the SS, those poor children were victims of circumstance and were turned into monsters no doubt.

Communism was a good thing for Russia . . moving off topic, cause it changed the country for a little while . . and then it went back to normal. Russia has been a country of suffering over the past 150 years or so.

Holland & Belgium (who were one country in the past) have been in a war that took 80! years. At that time we were at war with King Louis ??? (around XIV) of France. We wanted independance he didn't really like the idea of losing the nice dutch chicks with the blonde hair and big t*ts I guess. So it took 80 years to set us free. After that Holland and Belgium split up too, otherwise ZePenguin and me would still be from the same country, and we wouldn't be able to pick on each others country and it's people. :D.

if i start writing about indian history then it'll take me years , even our history has been divide into 3-4 books and every year we learn about it (till 10th grade of course ! )
i'll just say a few imp. things which happened
India was a British Colony for quite a long time , the french , portuguese and many others came here , thats why places like goa and punjab (where i live ) are totally different .

Then Revolt of 1857 happened and then 'Bapu' (Gandhi) took over and he led the charge againt the british Non CoOperation Movement , Satyagraha Movement ,Dandi March ,Quit India Movement and in 1947 we got independence but the most disastorus thing that happened that year was partition of india into india and pakistan ....just because the muslimes wantedseperate state for themselves ....

Kashmir Issue came up really late....
Partition of India refers to when Leader of Muslims Muhammad Ali Jinnah said that now that they were free of Britishers , they wanted a seperate state for themselves so Pakistan was created and we celebrate our independence day on 15th august , pakistanis celebrate theirs on 14th august.

what started it all ? The damn britishers started it all , they followed a divide-and rule policy and this led to conflicts betweens hindus and muslims....

If you know anyhting about Mahatama Gandhi , then u msut know that he always followed non violence methods to oust the british from india ....all those movements were non violent ....

Gandhi was a genius. I still think that's the best way to overthrone an agressive power. It would even better now, with all the cameras and reporters everywhere.
If the Palestinians used this tactic, I think they would be free by now.

Interesting topic. I'll try to touch a bit further on Australian history when i get the chance. And Gianpan, i waz born in Greece so i could cover that 4 you if you like.

Well, i'm of Iraqi descent but there's not much to speak of there. :(
There waz nothing in Iraq before Saddam became president, it was the first time Iraqiz were introduced to western civilisation, actually, 1st time they were introduced to ANY civilisation.
People used 2 live in worn out straw shacks but now they all live in colossal palaces just like Saddam. Before everyone used to wear clothes strung out of tree-leaves like Tarzan's but now they get to wear these really cool looking army uniforms. And chemical & biological weapons grow on trees, specially in the north and in the south, that's why the Kurds in the north & the Arabs in the south are alwayz hurting themselves.
Oh yeah, and they don't have cars in Iraq, everyone gets around on flying carpets.
There's a total trade embargo currently imposed on Iraq, that means that shipments of X-Box consoles arrive a little later than what most people are used to.
A lot of people have also been dying becoz of the sanctions, around 2 million in fact. But they're all the bad guys of course.
Ok, i won't bore you anymore with Iraqi history. Anyone for Solomon Islands' history? :monkey:
