Ruben Sosa 30-05-2002, 04:55:PM No offence Adriano, but this topic was totally uncalled for. Yes USA is no super team, but they aren't no push overs either.
Infact, didn't USA give Brazil a hell of a fight in World Cup 94's second round?

about 94...brazil won this wc so no coments... at INdependence's day at USA!!!!
well, don't compares brazil of pelé with usa of reyna
Internazionale 30-05-2002, 06:32:PM In France '98, the US lost all matches. In USA '94, they managed to qualify to 2nd round but losing 1-0 to Brazil.
Who knows the US can play better this time. But, I highly doubt this time as Poland, Portugal, and South Korea are tough teams to be beaten.
Steaua Buch Fan 30-05-2002, 06:59:PM man shut the **** up man you abuse too much man i'm not a USA fan but think of the supporters every single post i see is this sucks, that sucks, Brazil is the best !!! []v[]au 30-05-2002, 08:35:PM Eventhough that little insult by adriano is uncalled for, not to contradict you Icebleu, but not many countries play baseball, basketball, and football, so of course the US is going to dominate those. They have excellent atheltes, but so do many other countries.

I wonder how well the u.s would do if they had 5 million or so
Either way the u.s will never dominate football.. sure they will get better and good luck to em.. but dominate.. dont think so, its not in their blood so to speak :D
hristostoichkov 30-05-2002, 10:10:PM Iīm from Brasil and I donīt agree with this thread. I donīt think USA has a great team but they must be respected as anyone else. Ruben Sosa 30-05-2002, 10:13:PM Hmm... well Baseball is inexistent in Uruguay, and Hockey isn't that far behind. We've got some Basketball and Rugby, but not much. Then there's cyclism (sp?), that's a pretty popular "sport" here... Uruguay's true passion however, is, has been and always will be, Football.

US dominates in AMERICAN Football and Basketball, hell they were invented there, baseball, well let's just say: Sammy, A-Rod, Andruw Jones, Ichiro, Pedro Martinez, Alfonso Soriano, Jorge Posada etc..
Boxing: Lennox, Tito, De La Hoya and I always like to see the US olympic teams participating with Loo-Ying, Rodriguez and let's not forget Salivkovic in gymnastics.
You have look at it in every direction and don't take this the wrong way cause there will always be MJ, Agassi, Lance Armstrong, Micheal Johnson, Holyfield in those same sports so don't get angry and act like adriano...
Xenieze 31-05-2002, 06:29:AM Just to clear this up... The USA is not Argentina... or Brasil... or France... but, neither are Most teams on this planet.
The USA is one of the best teams in the world... by that I say they are in the top 90% of teams in the world.
Too bad (Or lucky for the world) all USA Athletes do something besides football, or can you imagine all the HUGE NBA/NFL/MLB/Running type athletes trying to be the best at football. Can you imagine that if in Ghetto the kids played Football instead of basketball? The USA team now is shorter than the Average hieght of a USA male. The USA would be Amazing
Brazil is actually kind of sad... they have one of the Biggest countries in the world and their only real sport is Football... They are physically as big as most europeans. they should absolutely dominate... But... they don't.

USA will dominate in soccer in 15-20 years. The way that Youth is trained here I guarantee that Youth Leagues are nowhere as well organized as here (maybe UK). Soccer becomes more and more popular.
It's funny to watch those 4 year olds playing soccer with a ball that is almost bigger than they are :D
Also why the US will dominate is the great number of imigrants. Young South Americans will become stars of the U.S. NT in a few years. I bet they will want to play for the US more than El Salvador, Bolivia, Colombia etc.

Brasil will always be considered a super power in soccer, whether we admit it or not. People don't always know the phases many of these countries go through. Brasil may not be the brasil of the past but they'll get some new superstars in the next 10 years. That's guaranteed.

bloke 31-05-2002, 06:41:PM Well?
If let's say that USA will dominate "soccer" in a few years. Let's just pretend.
Dominating in the sport internationally could probably help the US clubs become more popular.
Also Canada up here needs a lot of help in "soccer". When the Canadian national team wins a match it is considered something really "rare".
I'm Romanian and I support my country's national team. It's just that I can't help it but feel sorry about the Canadian team because they win nothing.
But then again, most Americans and Canadians don't give a sh!t about "soccer" and that's wrong. They should be converted somehow to the most popular game in the world.

We live in Hockey Land, there's nothing we can do to change that. Especially after winning Olympic Gold in both mens and womens it made the sport even more popular. Bottom line is if you are of a nationality where you have a chance to play in the world cup, wouldn't you go? I agree with Hargreaves and I think many more will make the same decision.

Adrian,
I don't get it: do you think Senegal's bad? They beat Nigera awhile back.
And the US team of 98 isn't the same team as now. Besides, if the US is the worst team at the World Cup, how do you explain their wins over Uruguay, Costa Rica, South Korea, Ecuador and Mexico? And those victories are recent - not games that happened a few years ago. And if I remember correctly, Brazil lost to BOTH Ecuador (0-1) and Uruguay (0-1) during their Qualification.
And don't you know who Reyna is? He's known in the US quite well, and he's even more known in Europe where he plays for Sunderland.

first thing off.. in soccer.. u cant say that a team "dominates" cause no team ever does... thats the beauty of the sport... no team has ever dominated soccer... brazil was a so called "dominator" when they found a brick wall at 98... evryone though a win from brazil.. he..
in soccer theres no dominition.. and evry person who knows soccer (or futbol) know this...
As for the US Team.. i am a proud American and if you really knew how soccer goes and really follow... I dont think it will be that long before US gets up a good hell of a team.. Look in LA, a soccer center is beeing build (or is already im not sure) for future soccer player in the country where top trainers from around the world will be there... you see this isthe thing... US really wants to be at worldwide stage such as teams from europe or south america.. and all is needed is work... do you think brazil as born world champions? nope.. took time and traiing and all that.. ANY team in the world can be a good team such as Argentina, Spain, Italia, Portugal, Uruguay... (and the list goes on and on, heck, to prove theres no such thing as domination in soccer) all it takes in the training and the knowlage of the sport... i dont say that in 2006 or even 2010 the US will win the cup.. but expect the US team to be a well known squad worldwide that for sure...

I'd have to disagree with that.
To succeed on international level you have to also have the passion for football and your whole country behind you.
I think that until football gets considerable coverage on US sports shows like SportsCenter etc. (even MLS gets no respect in the national media) US won't be able to be really succesfull consistently.
Regarding this World Cup, there have been some arrogant comments from both sides.
Come on guys, this is the world cup, any team can advance from any group (look at Senegals performance today).
While I think that US has very small chance to advance from the group, saying that one country will humiliate another is just arrogant.
OverrRide 01-06-2002, 08:31:AM ya thats true, have to agree.. but hey listen.. if the team starts to seem good at international level... people are gonna start to get more interested... well anyways, thats a point u came up with!

OK Basically i agree with u, BUT:
I know people have already said it, but the sports the USA play, no one else plays seriousley. Ok yes, other nations play basketball, but how many take it seriousley? I think there is a few coutnries in the world who are the best at what they do in sport. For instance, Australia World Champions, or are best at One day cricket, Test Cricket, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Swimming, Netball, Hockey (REAL not ICE :p), Surf Life Saving, Triathalon and a few more.
I can assure you that more nations take Rugby Union serious, then those that take Basketball seriousley.
I also think that this works both ways, the sports your contry are good at, seem to be the popular ones in that country.
I appreciate the fact that the USA are however, a great sporting nation, but saying they dominate all the sports they play, is limiting an unlimited argument. For instance its like saying that Kerry Packer is the richest Australian man in the World. Why not just say richest Australian man?
The USA field a team in the Rugby Union World Cup, and they arent close to dominating that. But the US media ignores that, because they dont win it, and because its ingored, it doesnt grow.
But, the point I really have to agree on, is that an aweful lot of sports these days are dominated, by either Australia or the USA, and this isnt to say that we play the same sports, we definatley dont, except for swimming. Cycling is one which they dont, but now with Lance Armstrong dominating the tour de france (but nothing else, which really annoys me, he isnt a legend, unless he races and wins more then one race), and Cadel Evans a rising star for Australia, this could soon happen. I do however think that Jan Ullrich is the best cyclist in the world, because he wins races other then the tour de france. When it comes to track cycling, the Australian team would be much stronger, except that heaps of our prospects quit or change to road, because in Australia, u cant make money from track. Look at Junior World Track Championships, and Australia have dominated for years, but most these riders have quit, or changed disipline over time. eg. Ben Kersten (World Junior Kilo Champion twice, quit, for 1.5 years, but is now riding again).
Speaking of Cycling, Mark Renshaw, could go on to be one of the best track cyclists ever, but will probably switch to road...Basically, he is best in Australia at the 1km Time Trial, Points Race, Scratch Race, Madison, Derny Race (not Keiren they are completely different), and 2nd best at the Ind. Pursuit. Basically about 90% of all track events, enduro, or sprint...and he's only 19...
Anyway thats all
Cheers

Im afraid it takes more then academy's to become a world force in soccer. People in South America (where I have to say the most skillful players come from) grow up with a soccer ball. For the USA to become a really good nation, soccer has to get enough public interest for people to give their children soccer balls, rather then baseballs, and gridiron balls, when they're growing up.
Cheers

Regarding other points,
its great that there is interest in the sport from young generation in US, but I still think its not enough, as a lot of kids playing football for their schools don't even know what Champion's League is.
btw, I think 2006 and 2010 might be a little early for US, as I don't believe this world cup will be a success for USA (the group is too difficult), but later who knows.
Finally, I agree that for the media to get interested in football, the team has to do well, but for the team to do well the media has to be interested in football. :)

No offence Adriano, but this topic was totally uncalled for. Yes USA is no super team, but they aren't no push overs either.
Infact, didn't USA give Brazil a hell of a fight in World Cup 94's second round?
Do you remember that game? USA had one good chance in the first few minutes. After that, nothing. Brazil had about thirty goalscoring chances and only Romario's crap finishing let them down. Hell Leonardo was sent off and they still beat those lame fuchs. Go watch that game again. The US gave them as much of a scare as Amercian Samoa gave Aussie last year.
Fotbalguy 01-06-2002, 05:58:PM US will never become great in football. Never.... b/c football and baseball will always dominate.
And who ever said about USA in top 90%.... u crazy man?
I don't knwo about you guys, but when I watch a football match, I wanna see skill then just boring defense longball football. Ever watch a US game? There seems to be no skill involved, no tactical connections. Same with MLS, it's BS.... As long as the US has bb and fb, "soccer" will never get further than it is right now.
adrianofifa's comments are plain stupid, probably same as him. However, Brazil will always be Brazil and by that I mean being good at "soccer"
The US are awesome at almost every sport....except "soccer"

*cough* *cough* I don't give a rats *** about friendly results *cough* *cough* Uruguay COULD have won the match *cough* *cough* If the refs blind it ain't my fault, him and the linesman must be related *cough* *cough* Football is a contact sport you know *cough* fouls HAPPEN *cough* and if you think Uruguay is the only team that fouls, well, you're beyond help *cough*
*cough*     *cough*
It doesn't matter if Uruguay "could've" won that match - because they didn't. And of course, there is physical contact in football, but you are aware(?) of the differences between legal contact and fouling?
And of course other teams foul, but never in my life have I seen a team foul as much as Uruguay did in that one game. I'm not exaggerrating either.
Anyways, if friendlies mean nothing, then I suppose Uruguay has this World Cup all wrapped up, huh.
Ruben Sosa 02-06-2002, 01:29:AM I don't know what you mean in the last line.
Anyway, I can't think of a good comeback line at this moment, so I'll get back to you.
And hey, Denmark had a few tasty fouls in there, you didn't by any chance catch that match did you?
Voltaire 02-06-2002, 04:03:AM I've seen all the World Cup games so far. Yes, the Danes committed more fouls than Uruguay...
But I think the Uruguay coached finally told his men to start playing more professionally; in the USA game, Uruguay was totally out-of-control. I'm glad they didn't bring their bad attitudes to the World Cup.

and please, its FOOTBALL, not SOCCER! That americian thing where they throw the ball and call it American Football - I never quite understand that, what part of football don't the yanks understand? Its easy, its two little words, FOOT and BALL, it sums up the sport perfectly yes? So why soccer?!!!! American Football should be RUGBY WITH SHOULDER PADS THAT JOAN COLLINS WOULD BE PROUD OFF AND A OVAL BALL THAT VERY RARELY HAS ANY CONNECTION TO A FOOT AND SPENDS MOST OF ITS LIFE IN THE HANDS OF PLAYERS or for short, just call it what I call it, UTTER SH*TE!!!
Its not only USA that call it soccer. Australia do aswell. Soccer originated from the name Association Football (Asoc. Football), and its just as correct as Football. SOme people say one, some the other, get over it,

You're absolutely right about the Association football thing, Skip E. I personally call it football, but who cares what we call it. Some people call it balonpie, some call it voetbal, some call it calcio. Why do people always want to start a fuc*ing sh*t storm over the word "soccer"??? Big deal. Aren't we all football fans egardless of what we call it??
As far as those who say that football will never be popular in the US, the EXACT SAME THING was said about hockey.
J.D.Love 02-06-2002, 07:44:AM There a number of problems with Calcio :D in the U.S., and its development, the U.S. will NEVER be a dominating force if these things do not change. First there is the problem with the league, its dopne "american" where all teh D1 teams are static, and you dont have any rotation from D1 and D2, this is bad, I believe that if a team faces being relegated to D2 they try and pick up the pace, play better, etc.. and bring the overall level of the league up. Then additionally the teams do not have youth programs, thay have a 2nd sting team, but not a youth team, like there is in so many of the clubs around the world, South America, Europe, Asia, etc... The youth program in teh US is absurd. You have parents coaching youngsters who have perhaps seen one or two Calcio matches, and besides knowing that you are not supposed to use your hands, are completely ignorant to the game. These people are supposed to be the teachers... youre kidding me right?! Nope.... they do in fact teach these kids "Soccer" or their rendition of it, which is for the most time wrong, or a misconception. And then theres the culture, kids play wiffle ball, or catch on the streets, they dont kick the ball around, its not in their culture to do so, Calcio, is left for the weekend, and is seen as an organized activity, which it doesent have to be. If the us is going to win the WC, i dont see it happeng before 2022.

LOL :D
I agree with you about our youth system, JD. There will always be a limit to how good our national team will get unless there are radical changes. With our population and resources, the US should have a much better team.
