Her performance on Monday night while being questioned by Garry Richardson was a microcosm of everything her critics say she is - sulky, arrogant and not that interested in tennis.

Asked whether her confidence was low after defeat by Tatiana Panova, she stood up and asked for the interview to be re-started.

Richardson then said, "Chris Evert, who knows about tennis, has said that when Andre Agassi stepped down to challenger tournaments, that helped him. Is that something that you might do?"

Kournikova's career has fallen away as the endorsements have increased

Kournikova stood up again, asking, "Can we try this again? Am I talking about this match, or what am I talking about?"

"You are asking a question but you are already giving an answer. You are saying my confidence is low and then you are saying you lost, how was your day, well obviously I lost."

Richardson tried again. "How will you get things back on track?

"By working hard."

Richardson: "How tough are things for you at the moment?

Kournikova: "I just try to do my thing and work hard and concentrate on what I have to do."

Richardson: "Do you think when it's not going well, 'I should pack it in, is it worth it?'"

Kournikova crumbles out

Kournikova: "Just like all people sometimes if something is not going well you feel down, but it doesn't mean that everything is a total disaster."

Earlier in the evening she had been asked in a news conference if the number of commercials she makes interferes with her professional career.

"I don't think it distracts from my tennis," she barked. "I am not involved in a lot of stuff. It's 99% les than what everyone says I do.

"Trust me - if I was not 100% committed to playing, I wouldn't be here."

Others aren't so sure. Pam Shriver, BBC pundit and former Grand Slam doubles winner, thinks Kournikova's career is nearly at its end.

"She is desperate to get it back and she has a great coach in Harold Soloman," says Shriver.

"He is supposedly working on her attitude and trying to make her a better person - but that [interview] was horrible.

Wimbledon's third day produced one of the most astonishing sequences in the history of The Championships with Pete Sampras, seven times champion, and the 1992 champion, Andre Agassi, being beaten in the second round.

In terms of raw sport, it was a brutal day for both players and it left them shell-shocked. Both are colossal favourites at Wimbledon, with their contrasting playing styles but undeniable thirst for victory. This was their territory - and no longer did they command it.

"This is definitely a low point," said Sampras. "I'm pretty down on what happened here."

Agassi echoed these sentiments. "I am a little stunned," he said. "I never found my rhythm out there."

Sampras, in the unfamiliar surroundings of No. 2 Court, produced the biggest shock when he was beaten over five sets by the lucky loser from Switzerland, George Bastl, who gained a place in the draw because another player withdrew. Bastl won 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4 against the sixth-seeded Sampras.

Little more than two hours later, Agassi, the third seed, followed Sampras out of The Championships after being beaten in straight sets on the Centre Court by Thailand's leading player Paradorn Srichaphan.

Srichaphan, in his fourth Wimbledon, took the attack to Agassi and never let up as he came through to victory 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) 6-2. Agassi appeared numbed by the result but did not linger as long on court as Sampras who waited for some time after Bastl had left to prolonged applause.

Sampras came into his 14th Wimbledon on the back on some uneven form, which highlighted the fact that his last victory at the All England Club was two years ago and this year, maybe, was his last significant chance of turning the tide. But the statistics of Sampras's year showed a player in decline and looking at every opportunity for something to restore his confidence and bring a string of victories again.

Agassi had not lost in or before the second round since 1998. He holds seven Grand Slam titles, the first of them gained at Wimbledon, and he was in the Wimbledon final in 1999, losing to Sampras, and in the semi-final for the following two years, losing to Pat Rafter each time.

Srichaphan, who turned 23 this month, had been beaten in the first round in the past two Championships and to defeat Agassi in such a setting and under such pressure added up to today being the most significant of his career.

The departure of class players did not end with the defeats of Sampras and Agassi. Marat Safin, the second seed from Russia, was beaten in four sets by the Belgian Olivier Rochus who won 6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1).

not the final. it was the Semi final.

Nalbandian meets Hewitt in the final after his win over Xavier Malisse of Belgium.

Malisse showed lot of courage after playing the match with a heart problem.
