I have a suspicion that maybe someone can confirm. I believe that the AI will response to how good your team is. Try playing as, first, Man Utd against a team (say, Barcelona). Then, play as Charlton (or some other weak team) against Barcelona. I think you will see the difference in how Barcelona play.

If this is true, then EA Sports have taken the game to an unnecessarily realistic level where teams find it hard to motivate themselves when playing a poor team. This may also explain why the simulated results are so unexpected.
