Argentinian legend Diego Armendo Maradona was asked about the qualities of Boca Jrs star Juan Román Riquelme.

-I´m sure that if Riquelme goes to the Camp Nou he´ll put it upside down. If the catalans buy him he´ll be a huge star in Barcelona like I could not be.
-I´ve seen him (Riquelme) play many times and I know the incredible things he can do with a ball on his foot. He´s a player that makes the team attack all the time with class and talent. And he also score.
- Riquelme is an unbelievable player he just don´t have the marketing that Beckham has. He (Beckham) is always on heaven outside the field but inside it he wons nothing decisive.

I think Riquelme is pretty good, Ive seen some of his games against brasilian teams and he can dribble and pass very well. And even though he dribbles a lot he is very objective, he just uses a very small dribble to get pass a defencive midfilder and when the defender closes in for the sweep he makes a killer pass

Ive only seem beckhams highlights in the English league and his WC games, I think they are just too different to compare

First of all Riquelme and Beckham plays in different positions so is totally unfair to compare both of them.
Beckham is a right midfielder almost a winger and Riquelme is a center midfielder.

Beckham plays in the English league and Riquelme in Argentinian league witch are differente leagues so is not fair to compare it either.

If I was a club president I´d like to see both of them in my team cos they´d be great together but if I only had money to buy one of then I´d buy Riquelme. And he´s a lot cheaper.:p (Barça or Atl. Madrid will buy him for about 10 million dolars)

Well I like Maradone beacuse he is bold and says what he thinks and doesn't care what do gooders have to say (too bad about the drugs).

Beckham, can only beat ****ty premier league. Put a good marker on him andf he sucks. Take away his dead ball speciality(which is fantastic), under pressure, how often do you see him do the other roles of winger, including crosses under pressure? You do not see it often in the premier league, so he is in all sorts in internationals when it arrives. BECKHAM IS CRAP, dead ball he is good, he has good parts for the EPL, but nothing else.

I agree, Beckham is more of an organizer you dont see him much in the game because he makes the ball run for him. Riquielme is more like Ronaldinho Gaucho an offencive midfielder :D But I dont think the injury had much to do with its performance in the WC, specialy because his main talent is passing the ball and taking free kicks and he doesnt run with the ball much.

I used to get upset about his comments but then I started reading full interviews not just the **** thats taken out of context and he is not that stupid. He did say some interesting things about this WC :D

Riquelme is an Amazing player... if you guys have seen him you'd understand. He looks like he is just casually strolling around the pitch picking up and distributing perfect passes. He is amazing. He is a player with World class vision and understanding of how each small movement he makes is going to effect the tactics of his team. I am always amazed with his style.

Is is Similar to D'alessandro in style. His style has nothing to do with Beckham...

The main reason he is still at Boca is that the club won't let him go unless people pay a LOT of money... Boca is hoping to pay a lot of debt from his sale.

Maradona is a horrible analyst... but don't bag Riquelme. He is pure class.

I will be honest, I have never seen Riquelme so comparison would be stupid, I am not about to "bag" a player I have no knowledge of. However as I keep noticing from my 3 odd years on this forum (previous identity) people always seem to rate their countrymen above others I think that Maradona would be inclined not to rate an English player above an Argentine. As for the rest of you "bagging" David Beckham, I don't think anyone can deny he is a World class player. But of course objectively, you could also say that he isn't the best at the moment perhaps (and his lifestyle is somewhat showbiz), but nevertheless he is a truly talented player.
Everyone is entitled to their point of view, football is of course, a game of opinions.For example I don't like Steven Gerrard, but I can't deny he is a good player.

I think it would have made more sense if Maradona mentioned Nelson Cuevas. Did anyone see the two goals against Slovenia when Paraguay needed to score three. Those were two of the most influential goals and were of great quality. I haven't seen Cuevas in any club games but what i saw at the world cup impressed me most. I would rate his second goal as quite close to the Maradona 2nd goal against england in '86 somewhat in quality and more so in terms of impact. Cuevas is an Attacking Right Midfielder i thought and so the comparison with Becks is more valid as Becks is a right midfielder basically.
But i must add that b4 declaring Maradona mad, one should keep in mind that Becks also plays centre of midfield 4 england. And i can't comment if riquelme is better or worse than him as i haven't seen much of the latter. but i guess both r world class players.
also plz don't vent whatever anger u have against maradona 4 he compared two players. everyone has his opinion. and all his comments shouldn't be looked at against the background of his drug scandal. he's like a tragic hero who himself is his biggest enemy.

Well, think of Beckham as a player without set pieces? Imagine Beckham with a marker, which you don't see in Premier League? To a lesser extent, imagine Beckham when he is about to cross or pass, a left back or midfielder back putting pressure on him? He is good for his role at Man U, but I do not think nearly as highly with his international credentials.
