View Full Version : I've converted to Konami!
::shinji:: 03-08-2002, 02:29:AM Hey, I've finally picked up a PS2, and I found a used copy of MLS Extratime...all I can say is that this game is amazing! Even though I know it's crap next to WE6 and PES, but for a guy who's never played anything besides FIFA, this is unbeleivable gameplay! Sad, I know....it's only MLS Extratime, but it's still a breath of fresh air after being stuck with the Fifa series (..only because that's all they sold around here)..
Has there been any news about something like PES2 being released in N. America? Sorry if this is a dumb question..:)
Internazionale 03-08-2002, 02:37:AM Hey, congrats shinji ! :) Finally u get a PS2 + MLS ExtraTime for the 1st time. About PES2 coming to North America, there are not any confirmation news about it. :(
Since soccer in America is not popular, there is a less chance PES2 coming to North America. But, anything can happen in next year...:D
Fabulous man!Well come to the good side of the force:) .
About PES2 in North America i wouldn't count on that:(
PES2 is set to Europe only.
::shinji:: 03-08-2002, 02:50:AM Thanks guys...
Shame about the lack of football games in N. America
I would consider the knife trick or a mod chip if i was u cause there's no news about konami(KCET) releasing a game to the US...and it might take a while:(
the_man 03-08-2002, 04:51:AM Welcome to the club. Yeah, get use to the flack from konami about no N. American games. Use the Knife trick.
Speaking of FIFA, I was playing FIFA on the GC with a friend of mine, first time since the demo....Now I fully understand why I don't play that game. Oh yeah scores were 4-6, 5-7, 8-4, 7-4 (me vs Him). My strategy (Han and ps2 will be upset), run the ball thru the defence tapping the sprint buttons...cut occasionally, you should find yourself 1 v 1 with the keeper. Beautiful game

Playing FIFA and using the "dribble eleven players and score with a scorpion king" tactic?
Damn right i'm angry, what's the matter with you? :p
Seriously now, nothing like a good old session of FIFA to remind u that we6 is the best, right?
I remember that a couple of months ago my room mate was playing FIFA2002 and when i saw the terrible ball physics and the way the ball seemed to be attached to the players feet by a string, i was like" How in the world can someone call that a football game?"
::shinji:: 03-08-2002, 07:08:AM Hehe, you think that's bad....about 2 weeks ago I was at a friends place playing Fifa2001 on his PS2, I'd never played Fifa against another person before so I figured it had to be a lot better than playing vs. the computer...well, we too had scores like 7-5 and 6-5, but the worst part was when I realized every single goal he scored against me was exactly the same!!! The old cross + bicycle kick goal!
Granted it was FIFA 2001, but they haven't gotten much better since, that's the sad part. EA seems to have something against "progress" :monkey:
That's the good thing about KCET: they always improve the game.
U know that when they where doing PES, i read somewhere that Seabass(the man behind we/pes) travelled to europe to see some football games...and that's why kcet games are so close to reallity.:)

bulldrig 03-08-2002, 09:42:PM Actually playing fifa once a month can be a verey good thing, you will learn to a appreciate WE6 much more then :)
theCRO 03-08-2002, 11:16:PM heh, another one, our evergrowing army is recruiting. Konami should pay all us patrons here money, or just send their latest WE to us for free.
Hell, I see clubman is a convert (sorta), so have the feeling anyone can be :)

Long time I ain't seen you in the SG forum....:D
Tom Green 05-08-2002, 04:54:AM many people is converting to konami!i remember when i registered in january, not many people knew about ISS/WE..hopefully someday konami'll release the game in america..
::shinji:: 05-08-2002, 06:07:PM If ONLY Konami released a WE or something in N.America, Fifa sales would go down bigtime, I'm sure of it! I don't even think they'd need to spend big dollars on advertising because an announcement like that would spread like wild fire through the internet and soccer fans would be lining up to buy it. I know I would!

It puzzles me to the business acumen of the people in KCET... If the link below for a chart of console game sales have any validity, US is in fact a big market for KCET's WE6 to enter into, as even FIFA 2002 have substantial sales

I generally agree with you in spirit, although I think several of your points are not as valid as you (or I) would like. The biggest fallacy that I've seen about KCET games is the rumor that Konami has starved the USA market by not bringing soccer games based on Winning Eleven to the USA. The truth is, there have been several games based on the WE series that have been released in the USA (ISS 98, ISS 2000, ESPN MLS GameNight, all for PSX).
I actually feel that the biggest problem for Konami games in the USA has been marketing/branding. Since there have been various games based on the Winning Eleven engine released in the USA, but they haven't sold well, I think that's a function of a couple factors:
1) soccer isn't big in the USA, at least before the 2002 World Cup
2) Konami hasn't promoted the games very well (if at all)
3) gamers have been confused by Konami's multiple lines of soccer titles
4) A lack of FIFPro/FIFA/Sponsor licenses has weakened the games' overall appeal. Why would a soccer gaming newbie (who doesn't know anything about the gameplay of all the various games) choose MLS GameNight which has MLS teams but fake national team player names, or choose FIFA which has MLS and European club teams (complete with logoed kits), along with "real" international squads?
I have Konami's ESPN MLS GameNight for PSX which was based on either WE4 or 5. It's still a great game, although the graphics are last-generation. It wasn't promoted well, and I don't think it sold many copies in the USA, but it is a great game.
The only reason I knew to buy GameNight, was that I spent a couple weeks surfing the internet before I bought a soccer game . . . and I'm glad I did :)
Seriously though, I heard that Konami's ESPN license is up and that it won't be renewed, and that concerns me. I think that what MLS really needs is a great soccer videogame franchise to really make the sport popular in the USA. The NHL was nothing in the USA (well, ok, outside of the Northeast) until EA's NHL games in the late 80's and early 90's. It taught the game--complete with difficult-to-grasp offsides and icing rules--to a whole generation of children across the USA who are now grown-up hockey fans.
I'd love to see the same thing happen with Winning Eleven, ESPN and MLS. Or perhaps Fox Sports World could make a deal with Konami, so we could play "Fox Sports World Soccer 2002" and watch FA, Bundesliga, SerieA games on FSW . . . just an idea.

The KCEA won't release any soccer games, well, maybe in the next 2yrs. Even I heard the rumor that KCEA will not EVER produce the soccer games anymore...:mambo: due to very low sales figures in ESPN MLS ExtraTime (PS2), ESPN MLS GameNight (PSone) and ISS Pro Evolution (PSone).
::shinji:: 06-08-2002, 11:55:PM I think part of the problem with the poor sales figures is the fact that they insist on putting "MLS" on it. I think if you ask any real football fan in North America if they'd prefer an MLS game or one with Euro teams, they'd take the Euro everytime. I think having MLS in the title is a turn off to a lot of people and a bad marketing move..

I tend to agree with you, but I don't think MLS is a poison pill. Remember FIFA has had MLS in the last few games, and have featured DC United players (I think Eddie Pope was on 2002, and Etch was on 2001) on the cover. The nice thing about FIFA is you also get ManU (with the Vodafone kits) and all the other great licensed Euro squads. I'm sure those licenses aren't cheap though, and EA probably has a stranglehold on the license in the USA. One interesting idea would be for Konami to get an MLS license and a US Soccer Federation license, so they could capitalize on the attention created by WC2002. But ultimately, Euro teams are where it's at.
Of course, the other solution to the whole team problem is for someone to write a killer editor for WE6, so we can make our own teams, kits, etc. In the world of Quake, many people do "total conversions" (TCs) replacing skins, menu backgrounds, music, sound clips, etc. It would be pretty slick to have a WE6 "Total Conversion" tool so you could not only create teams, kits, etc, but also replace all the menu backgrounds with your own photos :)

True, true...although I think the reason FIFA gets away with the MLS title is because it says "EA Sports" on the box....let's face it EA makes some great games, too bad they're NBA, NFL, and NHL games....I'm probably stating the obvious but I'm positive EA's reputation is why FIFA sells so well, that combined with the average North Americans knowledge of what soccer should really be like. It always makes me shake my head when i hear people say FIFA needs to be faster with more bicycle kicks and should have fighting like in hockey, etc etc
Internazionale 07-08-2002, 02:52:AM You forget 1 thing and the rest what u said are mostly I agree, shinji.
ISS Pro Evolution (PSone) is still the best one game I have ever played before. Sure, the graphics are not so good compared to PS2's graphics.
ISS Pro Evolution delivers more "DEEP"Edit option menu, buy/sell players, more than 30 European clubs if I'm not wrong, no MLS (which is a good thing). But, what the hell happened with the sales of this game ??:mambo: Like what u said, marketing of KCEA is one big problem in this game. They don't care so much about emphasing in marketing its soccer game in America.
After these poor sales figure, they built "MLS" ExtraTime (PS2). Well, it was a good thing. But, not to offense everyone who likes MLS, who wants to play MLS with fanatic soccer fans mostly want their European clubs + South American clubs.
Even KCEA cancelled their production ESPN MLS ExtraTime 2002 (PS2) last May due to poor sales figures in ESPN MLS ExtraTime(PS2). BAH !
::shinji:: 07-08-2002, 03:01:AM So that's why I've never seen MLS Extratime 2002 for PS2! I was wondering why they had it for GC and XBOX only...I even had trouble finding the first MLS Extratime, the only place I saw it was in a small used game store...
Internazionale, how would you compare the gameplay between ISS Pro Evolution and MLS Extratime? Would you say they are the same game more or less, excluding the teams, etc..?
I've yet to see it anywhere on sale, I have found ISS 98 in used game stores though, but figured it was too out dated and never got it..
Internazionale 07-08-2002, 03:08:AM The gameplay b/w ISS Pro Evolution and ESPN MLS ExtraTime is totally the same one.
In ESPN MLS ExtraTime, the shooting + free kick is NOT a horizontal-bar sign. They made it into sort-of 45 degree angle.
Even I had difficulties to score free kick goals from this game for about 1 year.
In ISS Pro Evolution, the shooting + free kick is a horizontal-bar sign with power meters in it. (This method is actually the best one, though).
The national teams (53) are totally the same.
The exclusion, well, ESPN MLS ExtraTime doesn't have any European clubs.
Internazionale 07-08-2002, 03:18:AM *addition* ;)
ESPN MLS ExtraTime doesn't have a "good' Option menu, No editing players, can't change the players' names, no deep formation/strategy menu. In ISS Pro Evolution, they do this in opposite ways.
Major complains in ESPN MLS ExtraTime:
- No International League Menu. (Only MLS). :(
- During friendly match, we must select (International/MLS) extra time option before we start the match. What's up with this option??
u know what I'm talking about, shinji.
In ISS Pro Evolution, there is an option of Golden goal(ON/OFF), P.K. match(ON/OFF), during friendly match.
::shinji:: 07-08-2002, 06:56:AM Yeah, that one of my complaints too about MLS Extratime, the lack of an international league option. It would be nice if we could even just make our own league by adding national teams, just like picking teams for a cup....oh well, despite it's short comings, it's still a lot better than FIFA. :D
It would have also been nice to change the fake names on those national team players...
That's really too bad about them losing the ESPN licence, I was actually hoping to hear news of maybe an ESPN MLS 2003 or something, but I guess that'll never happen now....hopefully EA can somehow 'steal' the WE game engine, lol :)
::shinji:: 07-08-2002, 04:07:PM Hehe, holy crap....I was just playing a game of MLS Extratime, I was using South Africa playing against Belgium and I fired a low shot from outside of the box....the ball hit one post, ran along the goal line, hit the other post, then hit the GK who was diving back and went in for a goal! This is amazing, it's like I see new things like that with every match I play!
