Thatīs ****ing bad. Now United just have to win at OT (what wonīt be hard, i hope).

VODAFONE MATCH REPORT

United's passage to the UEFA Champions League group stages was something less than certain after going down to an injury time goal against Hungarian champions Zalaegerszegi in Budapest tonight (Wednesday).

It was largely disappointing match that looked destined to end in a goalless draw until substitute Bela Koplarovics popped up to crack the game's only goal with seconds to go.

United appeared to have done an acceptable job as they bid to qualify for the Champions League proper, but they now have to turn the tie around at Old Trafford on Tuesday week.

Three weeks of pre-season preparations came to an end as United, four days earlier than they would have liked, got down to the real thing. Finishing in third place last season, their lowest since the Premiership began in 1992-93, meant that United were pitched into the Champions League qualifiers for the first time since 1999 when they of course went on to claim an unprecedented treble of Premiership, FA Cup and Champions League.

Anyone looking for an omen as this latest campaign opened would surely settle for that one as United approached the game against Zalaegerszegi (ZTE), the champions of Hungary.

This was United's first appearance in the famous Nep Stadium - now renamed the Ferenc Puskas Stadium after the legendary Hungarian star of the 1950s - since losing 2-1 to Ferencvaros in the semi-final play-off of the old Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in June 1965.

Sir Alex Ferguson brought in John O'Shea to fill the void created by the ankle injury to Rio Ferdinand during Saturday's UNICEF match against Boca Juniors. It was hardly the start to the season that United's latest recruit was planning.

United's first choice strikers, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ruud van Nistelrooy were, as expected, charged with leading the assault on the Hungarians' goal and in the 4th minute they nearly succeeded in giving United a dream start. van Nistelrooy received the ball just inside the home half and when he threaded his pass to Solskjaer, the Norwegian unleashed a shot which thumped against the post. It was a mighty let off for ZTE, but it was just the early boost the Reds were seeking.

The promising start was tempered to some degree in the 6th minute when Sir Alex was forced to make a change to his line-up after Wesley Brown had suffered a foot injury. Phil Neville was quickly warmed up and thrust into the action.

United continued to enjoy the majority of the early domination and once or twice they went close to finding a way past Sasa Ilic, the former Charlton Athletic keeper.

ZTE looked more than a little daunted by the presence of such illustrious visitors, but they slowly eased there way into the match and began to display some pretty decent football.

The Reds were forced to back-peddle against the increasing threat from the little known Hungarian side and on one occasion David Beckham, back to help defend a corner, almost headed past Carroll. And the Otto Vincze, wearing the number 77 shirt, swept past a couple of United players before thumping a great drive that Carroll did well to parry.

Beckham was given the opportunity to train his sights on Ilic's goal in the 34th minute after Tamas Szamosi had felled Roy keane on the edge of the area. Beckham primed his right boot but his shot caught Solskjaer and spun past the post.

United should have gone in at the break with at least one goal on the board, but van Nistelrooy skied his shot after taking a pass from Solskjaer in the last moments of the half.

The second half took a while to mopve out of first gear but then there was a burst of activity that saw Krisztian Kenesei go close for ZTE and van Nistelrooy have a shot blocked by Zsolt Csoka.

Van Nistelrooy appeared to have put United in front in the 59th minute when he latched on to Solskjaer's pass from Beckham's corner, but the assistant referee's flag had already been thrust skyward. And it was probably poetic justice as the corner award won by Giggs has to say the least a little fortuitous.

Midway through the half and United upped the tempo as they chased the goal that would make their qualification to the group stages a virtually formality back at Old Trafford in two week's time. There was also a couple of brushes with authority with both van Nistelrooy and Beckham both having their names noted for dissent by referee Wolfgang Stark.

Both teams appeared happy to let time slip away as the game neared its closing stages presumably content with what they had achieved. United would probably have preferred a win but an away draw is always acceptable whilst the chances are the ZTE would have settled for a goalless draw before the game had even started.

But, then with time all but over ZTE struck through Koplarovics met a cross from Florian Urban before pushing his shot past Carroll.

United must still be red-hot favourites to polish off the Hungarians when they meet again the week after next, but that wasn't going to spoil the party in Budapest tonight. It's an enormous result for the tiny club and who would deny them their moment in the spotlight.
