View Full Version : world cup for clubs
hitmanuk2k 27-08-2002, 04:36:PM what do u guys think of the idea for a World Cup for clubs. i know there already is a one sort of (like wat man utd played in 2000), but it needs expanding a bit and it needs to be more meaningful, and make it like the actual world cup, taking place every four years. every club would get a chance to qualify, just like the real world cup, it would be awesome. the year this world cup for clubs took part all of the continental "champions league" type competitions would be cancelled to allow for qualifiers to take place. it would be a truly great tournament.
zul-aid 27-08-2002, 05:14:PM yes and no, when you look at the differences in leagues such as EPL vs NSL (Aust league) there is a huge difference, which country gets representation, league etc., and the fact is it takes so many countries to qualify for the original world cup something like two and a half years maybe more, then times that by 13 or in some leagues 20 teams it would be hard to get all teams playing all the time plus some teams dont have the money to travel, so it will never happen (i believe that world cup Man Utd played in was a huge flop and no one wanted to it again) (also some second divisions teams are better then some other leagues first divison)
#1 Stunna 28-08-2002, 02:29:AM I think that the year after the World Cup the countries who made it to the World Cup should have a team, their best team from the previous year, represent them in a World Club Cup.

it is a good idea but it would be unfair for good teams like feyenoord. IT would be better this way: (the year previous the championship,in this way the teams that r going to the competition r in their best moment )
Champions cup Winner and runner-up
UEFA cuo winner and runner-up
Copa libertadores winner and runner-up and third placed
Concacaf champion winner and runner-up
Asian champion
African champion
Or sth like this
zul-aid 28-08-2002, 11:07:AM what about the NSL, Oceania area i know they are crap but all groups have to be there...
to many problems with this sorry it wont happen
Larry 28-08-2002, 12:11:PM Yeah,
NSL Champ,
UCL and UC Winners
Copa Libertadores Winner
Asian Champions League
Concacaf Winner

Just 6 teams?
mhflierman 29-08-2002, 02:33:PM I think it is a pathetic tournament. It's just another cashcow for the Football Associations. Clubs are already playing to many games in my opinion, so another competition would be really bad. There are already enough lucrative things for clubs anyway.
Sir Calumn 30-08-2002, 11:11:PM I think there should be no African Nation's cup, Cope America etc. Just the Champions league and UEFA cup which incorporated clus from the entire world (but max 3 clus from each world league).
Mauricio 31-08-2002, 12:49:AM the only thing for sure is that 2 mexican teams r going to participate in the tournament because they made it yesterday to the final of CONCACAF champions league: Morelia VS Pachuca
Digitarius 31-08-2002, 02:04:AM It would be pretty much pointless. The gulf in European and South American club football with the rest of the world is much larger than international football, for all the best players in Asia and Africa all leave for Europe.
Also, there will be an increase in the number of games and I cannot see it happening. The World Club Championship in 2000 was a flop and a waste of time, with low crowds in all games except those involving home teams and playing in the Brazilian heat which everybody wilted from.
The only clubs benefitting will be the African, Oceanic and Asian teams, because they will be getting big money playing against big clubs. Even low crowds in European standards will be high for them, probably.
yea it seems like a good idea, right now it seems as feyenoord would be cheated as the netherlands didn't make the world cup and theyy surley could contend.
Feyenoord aren't even the champions of the Netherlands, so what're you on about?

1.- All international tournaments r going to be cancelled that year (Champions league, copa libertadores, etc) so teams like Real r going to use their best players and that would make a very interesting tournament
2.-Mexican teams r in the same level than south american teams in fact is the 3rd best league in the continent
3.-Mexican teams VS Spanish teams in the 2 recent years
2 for mexican 3 draws 0 for spanish teams like( Real madrid, Atletico,Real sociedad, deportivo, osasuna)
BTW World Cup is almost the same, America VS Europe
