View Full Version : A question for Americans....
a_shearer 29-06-2000, 10:15:PM Why is that American football (saaaccer http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/smile.gif) fans hardly ever support team USA, but instead flaunt the jerseys of European teams.
In my town (in America) I have seen 2 Inter shirts, 1 Juve shirt, 1 Milan shirt, 5 Italy shirts, 3 Germany shirts, and 1 Man. Utd shirt.
And the worse part is that they don't even know ANYTHING about the team they 'support'. I asked one fella' to name a player on the Juve squad since he wore the shirt. He couldn't. I asked him to name ONE player on the Italian team. He said Ronaldo. I shook my head and walked away.
One person had the audacity to ask if I supported Juve oneday. I gave him a funny look and then realized I was wearing the black and white stripes of my hometown of Newcastle. After a while I caught on and told him that I was a Toon Army fan. He had never heard of them. Nor had he ever heard of Alessandro del Piero or Edgar Davis.
They are Americans. Shouldn't they be supporting the MLS teams? I would say that maybe they though supporting crappy teams made them look pathetic, but many people support 3rd division clubs in England. And what about those people in Japan? Their teams suck, but they get out and support them.
diablo2000 30-06-2000, 01:28:AM a_shearer:
Who cares???????????
Who the **** cares about all that.????
Here is a news flash for you...the MLS is a fledgling league in its infancy. Americans support teams they identify with...not just winners. Ever talked to a Chicago Cubs fan????
By the way, you in tht 2-story house of yours and that Jag...must really live a pathetic existance. You are now counting football jerseys and polling the people that wear them on their knowledge of saaccer. You say you walked away shaking your head...I bet most of the people you quizzed walked away thinking...what the **** was that moron all about.
You see Americans are into other sports, mate...like baseball, football, basketball... why would anyone here give a rats ass about Alessandro Del Piero???? Americans have better things to do than memorize the lineups of third division teams...things like getting PUSSY!! Ever try it????? No, I did not think so...A good piece of pussy would probably kill you, mate... The finest girls in the world are here, mate, but they couldn't care less about Toons and and guys whose biggest thrill in life is to travel abroad and pillage communities that host saaacer tourneys in a drunken, shaven headed, angst driven frenzy, while reciting the lineups of the entire third division clubs developmental squads. GET A LIFE MORON.
I apologize if this has offended any of my English friends on this forum...I really enjoy (almost)all things British and am intrigued by your custums, BUT this a_shearer really gets under my skin with moronic posts like this one. Can anyone really be so stupid, I think the guy just writes that kind of stuff to get a reaction ...I should have ignored it but...well, what the hell........
Emerson 30-06-2000, 01:35:AM Do you get pussy? Pussy is good. For Americans, can you get better pussy if youre on a school soccer team? I mean if youre really good? haha, all those hoes care about if someone is in sports n ****.
now, how stupid am i?
GShakan09 30-06-2000, 02:04:AM i, also live in this miserable country.
i've already learned this aspect of americans, like last year i was asking people(on my football team) if they were going to watch the champions league that night. they said when's it on. then they asked who was playing. the only team they knew about was man united. and this guy knew about juventus, but he pronounced it with an english j, you know what i mean, instead of a y. and forget the players, they might know beckham and ronaldo but that's about it.
but really, they look so innocent when showing their ignorance of football that i decided to take it easy on them and not criticize them or anything, besides they're my friends and everything. they just don't understand at all the european mentality, so you can't really blame them. just leave them as it is and don't talk about football all the time when you're at school.
to emerson: it wouldn't help crap if you were on the soccer team in school, as opposed to being on an american RUGBY (not football) team. after all, soccer here is considered a pussy sport, cuz it has no aggression and all. they think just because the scores are low it's not exciting, again, they just don't understand. actually, it would help more if you're in a band http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/smile.gif)
Paolo_Rossi 30-06-2000, 02:44:AM I hate USA cause they destroyed hockey .Theres like 26 american teams and only 6 canadian .The only problem is that the americans have the cash ,but us canadians we have the passion for that sport ,the only problem is that money talks these days and the NHL commissioner is american(Gary Bettman). What is sad is that a legend by the name Maurice richard died, one of the greatest players of all time, yet when they said his name in the stanley cup finals(Dallas-New jersey),not one person knew who the hell he was ,they dont even their own team .USA ,you stole our sport ,what is next ?
Emerson 30-06-2000, 02:47:AM Rossi, I thought you're from Italy? Where are all those people that live in America from? I'm from the Chicago area.
Paolo_Rossi 30-06-2000, 02:56:AM Im from Montreal,Canada, but most of my family were born in italy and i visit my family in italy every summer .Here in canada ,we respect our ancestors and for me,despite not being born in Italy ,i still speak italian here and im planning to move in Italy when i get older .
Emerson 30-06-2000, 02:59:AM oh yeah, how old iz you brotha?
Paolo_Rossi 30-06-2000, 03:02:AM 15 ,why?
Emerson 30-06-2000, 03:16:AM just wondering how old everyone in here is.
Paolo_Rossi 30-06-2000, 03:24:AM 18
Inter09 30-06-2000, 03:53:AM I live in the f*ckin middle of nowhere USA. Wichita, KS. Soccer is popular as a youth sport here, but the talent isn't that great. We have a professional indoor team-the Wichita Wings-the longest running professional soccer team in the country(maybe not just soccer). They've been around since 1978. They use to get sellouts all the time until they joined the stupid NPSL where goals are worth 2 points and 3 points for a long goal-like f*ckin basketball! Now no one goes to the games. They have been threatening to move. No one I talk to here knows anything about football(soccer) players in Europe. One of my friends follows some, but not that much. I have to follow my team-Inter-on the Internet b/c they never show any soccer games. MLS needs some class and style behind it. They have no tradition like in Europe(they are still quite new of course) but there are so many other more popular sports in the US. Also, everything is so f*cking commercialized, its all about making money.
Voltaire 30-06-2000, 04:03:AM Sometimes, Shearer, people enjoy wearing the best-looking sport apparel.
Other people enjoy wearing uniforms because of the name on the back.
Other people enjoy wearing uniforms because
they have a general knowledge that the uniform belong to "saaaaacer" heavy-weights.
Working at Disney, I see a few English wearing basketball clothing from the American basketball league (NBA). They probably do not know an inkling about the players/history/stats, etc, but why should that stop them from wearing American-named uniforms?
Do you like Aerosmith? They are American (or at least I believe they are), but that does not prevent millions of Asians, Europeans, etc to enjoy their music...
A better example: is everyone on Newcastle actually from that vicinity? Yet, they still manage to play for them.
TeKNoS 30-06-2000, 06:30:AM Guys, guys...hold on for a sec. Before you argue with this fool, remember he is someone that admits that he cannot pronounce easy-written names like Pele, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Denilson, etc.
Oh and Shearer, please please do not humour me more with your "wealth." This guy has all the symptoms of a mid-life crisis...LoL The sports/luxury car, mentioning how much wealth he has, traveling, etc. It seems SOMEONE isn't satisfied with himself. But of course you hide that with your big ego.
Buddy, if you really are going to be so shallow as to continue posting topics like this, then you'll never reach self fullfillment. I never really do understand what people get from attacking other people's backgrounds or customs. Oh well, whatever blows their goat I guess.
persian33 30-06-2000, 07:58:AM "Do you get pussy? Pussy is good. For Americans, can you get better pussy if youre on a school soccer team? I mean if youre really good? haha, all those hoes care about if someone is in sports n ****"
Emerson what are you trying to say..
are you trying to say jocks get pussy..
What does being good at soccer have anything to do with getting pussy..
I am good at chess, can I get pussy?
Emerson 30-06-2000, 03:59:PM hey persian, do you know omid and hamid? lol, they play chess too. http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/wink.gif
a_shearer 30-06-2000, 11:08:PM You really are a shallow minded little ****-head aren't you Diablo? I'll bet your a little teenage asswipe who sits in his room DREAMING about a woman. I'm tired of talking with foul-mouthed children such as you. Insecure in your own sexuality, evidently.
But by the way, every time I "travel abroad and pillage communities that host saaacer tourneys in a drunken, shaven headed, angst driven frenzy" with my mates, I tend to have a VERY good time with the local women. But I doubt you'd know anything about that at all.
And as for Teknos, I will not be drawn into ANOTHER ****ING argument with a user who's only aspiration is to tick people off. Every flame-war involves your sorry ass in some way. Piss off.
Many Americans have NO IDEA what football really is!! You don't wear a club strip because it 'looks nice'! Women do that!
Go and wear the Mackam strip in downtown Newcastle and see what happens. Go ahead and tell the Geordies that kick your arse black and blue that you wore it because it 'looked nice'.
Zizou 01-07-2000, 12:25:AM a_shearer,
I keep waiting for someone like you to come up to me when I'm wearing one of my Juve shirts and ask me about it. I always love to surprise people with the fact that this dumb American actually knows a little bit about football!
But seriously, does it really bother you that much that some folks wear football shirts and don't know anything about that team? In my trips to Europe, I've seen tons of people wearing American sports teams' gear, and I'd be willing to bet that not too many of them can name one member of the New York Yankees' pitching staff or the Miami Heat's starting point guard. Some folks just like to wear that stuff to be fashionable, which doesn't really offend me. Heck, the money they spend on that stuff helps those teams be successful, whether they support them or not. And as for your question about why football fans here would support clubs from other countries or other national squads, well, football fans like to see good football, and frankly we just don't have that here. Any fool can see the difference between Juventus and the Columbus Crew quite easily, and it's only natural to want to identify with a winner. It's the same reason that American football fans in Cincinnati will wear Dallas Cowboys or Minnesota Vikings gear. Their local team is crap and has been crap for a long time and they just want to support a winning team for once in their lives.
Also, like Paolo_Rossi, some folks here, while having been born in North America, retain strong ties to European countries through family, etc. My mother, for example was born in Germany and is a big Bayern Munich supporter, and while I don't support the same club she does, she got me interested in the European game when I was young and I've been hooked ever since.
So anyway, lighten up a bit. I know I'd much rather see people in football shirts than lots of other things I can think of. ;-)

USFutbol 01-07-2000, 02:20:AM I always wanted to discuss this topic. I think both sides are right. I liked a_shearers point when he said that when people wear a jersey to look pretty, it's the same thing girls do. LOL! But anyway, I have a Milan jersey. I don't "support" Milan(I don't cry when they lose, etc.), but I like English and Italian soccer, have played soccer for over 10 years(i'm 19) and i CAN name the starting lineup of the team.
Zizou raised a good point when he stated lots of Americans like Euro football because of their descent. When the USA got knocked out of USA 94', I followed Sweden, because it's my heritage. But since I live in St. Paul, MN, it's kind of hard to find an AIK or Gothenburg jersey!
And paolo rossi, you're half right about hockey. As I said, I live in Minnesota, home of the coldest metropolitan area in the lower 48 states. So when winter comes, me and my friends have nothing better to do than play the best sport behind soccer, ice hockey. I don't think many Canadians that grew up playing in the 50' and 60's, watching Rocket Richard, Howe, Plante, Orr, and Bealiveau ever could imagine Hockey teams in fu***** Florida and Texas!! So in a way, the US has ruined it in the pursuit of money. The only consolation for this is to basically support a team from the original six. Since the North Stars left(we get the Wild in Aug.), I support the Red Wings. I'm guessing you're a Habs fan, right? By the way, did you ever see those "I am Canadian" commercials produced by Molson a few months ago?
Russian Rocket 01-07-2000, 02:45:AM did you hear that Calgary can move to Oklakhoma City and rename: Oklakhoma City Flames?
my favorite team... and moving to some sh!thole where people will visit hockey games just because there is no other sports team in Oklakhoma.

All you foriegners who are talking trash about the great country of the U.S. Of A need to pack your bags and jump back over that freking fence where you came from because were sick of you taking our jobs just because you work for cheap. All you who are talking about the gee Sport of HOCKEY??? this is a soccer web site. if you want to talk about hockey than go the this web site " WWW.Homosexuality.Com i think you will enjoy it!
Voltaire 01-07-2000, 03:39:AM Now, now...
I only said that some people find uniforms interesting, and buy it because of it...
But you brought up a ridiculous point that only girls like to dress up nicely...
Maybe where you come from, only girls like to choose clothing based on aesthetics, but in most parts of the world, it is classy for a guy to be a good dresser...take for instance, Italian fashion...was it meant just for girls to enjoy?
Emerson 01-07-2000, 03:49:AM hey yo, where are you from? are you gay or sumphin?
GShakan09 01-07-2000, 04:14:AM hey bettsave, i would take your invitation to go back to europe very willingly, but unfortunately, i don't really know where i'll stay or who i'll stay with, so it's not as easy as it sounds you know.
BettSoccer01 01-07-2000, 07:27:PM I think us Americans cant give a rats ass who's on what team. Whene i Went to England for Reginal Tournament i bought 7 Jerseys and 2 goalie jerseys because they looked good on me. I could give a rats but who played on that team.. And whast with England and the Chicago Bulls? I dont look at them and shake my head and say I bet they dont know who starts for the Bulls. Oh yeah are USA youth reginal team who knows nothing about football beat England,Germany,Italy, And soccer is most popular youth sport right now.
BettSoccer01 01-07-2000, 07:32:PM ^^^^^^^Goalie Jerseys for my little brother
Kevin_SG 01-07-2000, 08:24:PM In Canada where I live, suprisingly many people are actually educated in soccer and know things about the English teams and Italian teams, but I guess that is because we get good soccer coverage on our TV's here...I walked into a store (not a soccer store, a clothing store) one time, and I was wearing a AC Milan jersey, a guy who works there walked up and we talked about AC Milan for like 20 minutes, and he knew a lot...I don't know about USA but up in Canada we know the sport that we like.... http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/smile.gif
Kevin_SG 01-07-2000, 08:27:PM Inter09, I live in Edmonton and we have the Edmonton Drillers who are also in the NPSL, that is indoor soccer not outdoor, that is why the point scoring system is different...
Mediawhore 01-07-2000, 09:18:PM a_shearer,
You can't possibly be suggesting it's a good thing that people get their asses kicked because of the shirt they're wearing? Geez, that's immature. Have a cup of herbal tea or something, mate. Your testosterone tends to go into overload when you post here. Calm down. Welcome the aburdities of life.
Kevin,
Spread the word. if we don't sell enough for the Canada V. Trinidad and Tobago game here July 16, future matchups will be few and far between. And on the Drillers and the rest of the NPSL: I don't know what it is, but it's great entertainment. It ain't soccer, either, mind you....
a_shearer 01-07-2000, 09:33:PM ATTENTION!!!
Maybe its just July 4th fever, but THIS IS NOT AN ATTACK ON THE US!
This is a brilliant country.....make the MLS decent and you might be the best in the world!
(Ummm....maybe second http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/wink.gif)
Emerson 01-07-2000, 10:01:PM haha, hell yeah. i can't see any other country but the u.s. win the olypmics.
Drinky UKSN 01-07-2000, 10:08:PM Walk around Newcastle in a Mackems shirt at night and you will find trouble. Fact.
Walk around Salford in a Man City shirt though, and you'll have no trouble. (This is a glory supporting joke, laugh whenever you want).
GShakan09 01-07-2000, 10:56:PM that's the thing with most people that live here, not just americans, but hispanics, etc. they play football, but they're not fans of it. like fans of teams and stuff. everyone else on my school team hardly know anything about teams and everything, the people that like football here only follow it during the world cup. that's what people talk about all the time, the world cup, cuz it's the only thing that matters to them.
hey, bettsave, i'd just like to say you're a poser cuz well, you are.
TeKNoS 01-07-2000, 11:57:PM Gshakan09:
What are you talking about ?
Hispanics don't follow football ? Then how come more than half of the stadiums during MLS games are filled with people from Central and South America ? My God, there is a vast number of South Americans that are bought by the MLS to play on those teams.
I guess down in Central and South America we all play baseball and volleyball. D@mn I guess I've failed to notice that.
And as for you a_queerer:
I only point out people's flaws, or the ignorance in their statements. If they react angrily and strongly about that, in the same way you did, it's because my arguments have some truth to them. People don't like to be proven wrong, and I understand that completely.
One thing that I hate the most is when idiots like you label or mock a certain group of people for totally irrational reasons. And the funny thing is, that only YOU notice these things. You get a kick out of the strangest things really. And the fact that you can't pronounce Brasilian names makes me laugh even more. You're a living human joke, and that's final.
TeKNoS
Kevin_SG 02-07-2000, 02:29:AM Mediawhore, I don't know what I'll do if Commenwealth Stadium isn't the "Official Stadium for Canadian Soccer"...I'm going to the game to cheer on Canada but also to see Dwight Yorke...Man Utd. is my favorite team and I'm interested in seeing this guy in action...Dwight Yorke will put a lot of people in the seats hopefully...we need 20,000 people for the game and in the Journal in the advertisments all they do in talk about Yorke....I CAN"T WAIT, GO CANADA!!!
GShakan09 02-07-2000, 02:49:AM teknos, first of all i'm talking about the people i interact with around my area. and second of all, do you consider going to mls games and knowing all about the mls a virtue? haha, good one. no, that's not called a fan of football. the mls doesn't deserve the title of football. what i mean is they don't know anything about teams like juventus and other european teams.
fifa-unleashed 02-07-2000, 03:26:AM I was born in Flagstaff, AZ (i visited there a couple months ago nothin there 'cept a couple of houses), raised in Boston, but now lives in North Carolina. My favorite club team is Everton, and Arsenal (and sometimes I support the MLS team NE Revolution), and I know the teams very well. Though I enjoy being in Europe, my favorite national team is still the US. ANd about us Americans liking other sports other than soccer, it's changing. (Though, I myself like baseball, and used to play baseball, along with soccer, but still...)
a_shearer 02-07-2000, 04:40:AM "You're a living human joke, and that's final."
Only a child uses such childish and stubborn phrases. And a frustrated one at that.
If you like getting a kick out of pissing people off, then go do it at the local playground with mates your own age.
And just for the record, I can pronounce P...p...pp...ppppp...ele, just fine.

And no, sorry I'm not a sadistic bastard like yourself that posts about how unsatisfied you are with how Americans behave and live. I don't get a kick out of making people angry. And how hypocritical can you get, especially since you live in Texas, a center of American pride ?
