Uefa accused of TV censorship

Are Uefa censoring the TV coverage from Euro 2000, making sure the "right" replays are shown? Ivar Hoff, former top coach and now TV commentator for Norwegian TV2, incredibly believes that is exactly what is going on. In a sensational claim, Hoff told Dagbladet’s web site: “I noticed this already from the first game in the tournament. There have been several controversial situations which have not been shown in replay.

"You start to wonder, as many interesting situations are not shown - especially situations where the referee could have made wrong decisions. It is very frustrating."

Hoff claims the quality of TV productions from Euro 2000 has been much poorer than in the World Cup two years ago. And, he is especially upset with what is NOT shown.

"If there are directives about this, as I have heard, it is completely the wrong way to go. The world must be allowed to see the truth. We want proof if an offside was correct, if the referee has been right. Viewers demand this.”

And incredibly, from the Norwegian state channel NRK come further claims that Uefa are trying to make sure only "proper" things are shown.

"There are signals from Uefa that the productions shall not take negative angles,” said the technical chief from NRK, Odd Kaldefoss, to Dagbladet. "Uefa puts limits on how the broadcasts should be presented. They want “happy” scenes.”

Another Norwegian commentator, Arne Scheie, agrees with Hoff´s critisism. "We should have been allowed to see more of the drama on Wednesday. We all want sports to be clean and nice. But when it happens as it did, we must see it", said Scheie.

"There were attempts to attack the referee and 20-30 Portuguese players where running after the referee. It is a pity the TV audience could not take part in what was going on, even though they were not nice scenes.”

From the first game to the last, often controversial plays were not replayed. Protect the referees? It's good that they protect the refs to let them perform without extra stress. But hiding controversial replays is also hiding the truth...

Believe me, Polish, what you saw on Belgian TV's production (shown on ITV) was only half of it. Several players actually physically abused the referee - elbows, headbutts, etc. As for a UEFA directive, I thought this was common knowledge - Arsenal were fined £40,000 by UEFA for showing a replay of 'unsavoury action' on their video wall during a game.
