Hehe, I guess we can say that Porto won in 4 games, with Boavista, Sporting and Benfica losses. (H)

Until this point of the tournament, we're by far the best team and I can't wait for that Porto X Benfica in 2 weeks.

The game of the weekend was Braga X Sporting. If you can, check out Sporting's 2nd goal, by Tello - It's fantastic!
Anyone who likes football should also check Porto's goal, scored by Deco! He's a genius... the way he dribbled those 2 guys and shot from outside the box... He's the best player of the league so far.

I was going to see the Varzim X Belenenses game, since I'm also fan of both teams, but I got a bit late and my gf was lazy, so...
:p

I really hope A.O. calls up Helder Postiga for the next national team game...I may be a Benfica fan, but this kid can score goals....I like Pauleta and Nuno Gomes, but neither has been very impressive for the NT in a long time, since last year I would say (with the exeption of Pauleta's WC game vs. Poland)

Deco has not been the best player in the Portuguese League. Barroso is my vote for the best player so far. Tello's goal was beautiful! My favourite goal so far this year was Simao Sabrosa's Free Kick though! Check it out:

Thanks for the link. Tello's goal is much better, but that's a matter of tastes, really.(6)

About Barroso, just because he scored 2 goals against Sporting that doesn't make him the mvp of the league. I watched the game and he was ok, but not superb.
Deco, on the other hand, has been doing it all and even takes time to showboat his skills on the pitch. He's amazing and Barcelona agrees. For some reason, Barça will probably buy Deco and not Barroso next December. ;)

Hmm, this is a good idea for a thread.

Damn right, not every thread has to be about the EPL in here! :D

Anyhow, wanna see what my Portugal 2004 line-up would be if I was coach of the NT (..and someday I will be)? Check it out, this is the cup winning squad right here, some say I'm crazy, but...

GK: Quim (Morreira)

D: N. Valente
D: Fernando Meira
D: Jorge Andrade
D: Paulo Ferreira

M: Luis Boa Morte
M: Neca
M: Hugo Viana
M: Simao Sabrosa (Sergio Conceicao)

F: Helder Postiga (Makukula)
F: Nuno Gomes

For Euro2004 I'd go wth shinji's line up. Seems fairly balanced and full of talent. Just take out Boa-Morte and add Quaresma and I'd be satisfyed. On second thoughts, I'd also go for Ricardo. He's more reliable in the long run. Quim is good but has his flaws. The Boavista keeper is more complete.

However, I think it'd be a smart idea to call up 3 or 4 players from the golden generation. I mean, they have lots of experience, they have played in the best leagues, in the best teams, in all sorts of environment, under all types of pressure... We need them. Figo, obviously, but also João Pinto and Rui Costa could be useful. ;)

Same buddy, but my lineup was referring to the team we have right now. The lineup I mentioned is what I'm hoping for in the Tunisia and Sweden game coming up.

BTW, where do you guys watch you portuguese league games?

On the stad, whenever I can. :)
Since I'm a FC Infesta fan, I chose to go to their games instead of 1st div. ones. But I always catch 3 or 4 FC Porto games per year. I'm going to the Porto x Benfica in 2 weeks. [We know who'll win:rockman:]

As far as tv is concerned, RTP1 is an obvious choice, as RTPi should be to you guys in the American continent.;)
I also watch the games on SporTV.
Btw, do you get RTPi in Canada, shinji?

::shinji::

Yeah, we get RTPi, SIC, and SPORTtv...I don't have them, but Portuguese bars and clubs usually have those channels.

Yeah, shame about Sporting and Leixoes, but I'm always glad when a Portuguese team wins in European competitions....hopefully Boavista and Porto get favourable draws in the next round.

Same here. I always root for Portuguese teams when their in europe. Anyways here's our squad for the upcoming friendlies against Tunisia and Sweden:

Looks like a pretty good squad to me, but no Quaresma?

Well, at least there's no Vitor Baía. Quaresma and Postiga should be there (preparing for future), but at least we have Neca. :)

Cristiano Ronaldo! Could it be we have another superstar in the making? :D

I'd seen glimpses of him before and thought he was a good young player, but what a game vs. Moreirense! INFESTA, what's your opinion on him?

I've seen him do some magic before, but yesterday he had his best game so far. Luckily for him, there were spies from Inter, Milan and Juve on the stands just to see him play. There's already a buzz about Inter trying to buy the 17yo. Yes, he is SEVENTEEN years old!

He's rather tall and slim, but he's lightning fast and has an amazing dribble (like the other Ronaldo), but this kid is more of a wing player than a striker. He can also head the ball and scored a fantastic lob (Pires style) in the beginning of the current season.

Sporting has so many talented youngsters, it's incredible!! Ronaldo, Quaresma, Quiroga, Contreras, Carlos Martins
Their coach made a significant change for the better. He put all those old bags on the bench and gave the 17year olds a chance. If they can keep all this guys on their roster, Sporting will be a serious European contender. Fortunately for Porto and Benfica, they won't. (6)

Btw, guess who's back? JARDEL! :p He played yesterday!

::shinji::
09-10-2002, 08:48:AM
Yeah, I think it has to be said that along with Ajax, Sporting has to be one of the best footballing schools in Europe as far as producing talented players..

I totally agree with your last statement too Hugo...I'm sure it won't be long before Sporting gets raped of all it's talented youngsters. Which in a way isn't a bad thing necissarily in my opinion. I think they can only improve with better competition in stranger leagues...I just wish more Portuguese players would go to play in England or Germany, just to toughen them up, and so they can get used to playing in a league where the refferee's don't have such an impact in the outcome of games....like in PORTUGAL, Italy, and Spain. :-s

Hey, anyone else noticed that Romeu from V. Guimaraes is currently the top scorer in the league? If he can keep up this current form I'd like to see him called up to the NT. Some people at Xtratime.com dissagree with me, but I beleive in calling up the best players at the time based on current form, not based on their name or because they play for a big foreign club.

Totally agree with you, man. After all, what we need is players in good form, not big names like Figo's in the WC2002. Of course, there must be a solid base of players, or else we might find ourselves without team chemistry, but a good coach could deal with it.
About Romeu, let me just tell you all that he played in FC Infesta for 3 successful seasons, before being sold to FC Porto. Do I need to say more about me wanting him in our NT? (H)

::shinji::
10-10-2002, 11:34:AM
lol, that would be cool to have a former Infesta FC player in the NT! :D Seriously though, with two years worth of frieldlies, it's the perfect opportunity to give players like Romeu, Quaresma, Neca, Postiga, etc. a chance to show what they can do...

Getting back to Cristiano Ronaldo, here's an article someone posted at xtratime about Manchester Inited's interest in him..

Cristiano Ronaldo to Man Utd? (http://http://www.planetfootball.com/article.asp?id=113431&cpid=8&title=United+trail+Ronaldo)

Boy, I sure hope he doesn't join ManU. Ronaldo doesn't deserve that.:D [I just can't help it]
But seriously, since Carlos Queiróz is ManU's assistant manager and we all know that he loves young talented players like the 17yo, I see that transfer happening, but only by the end of the season or even later. Lets keep in mind that Queiróz was the coach behind the rising of players like Figo, Rui Costa, João Pinto, etc.

Jardel... that's funny!

Jardel is back from his fake psychological illness! :D

What happened was that he was expecting to transfer into a big european club (like Barça, or Madrid, Milan, etc) since he won the best european striker title last season!
But there were no real offers for him or those that existed were no good for his actual club (Sporting Lisbon)!

Therefore he and his manager refused to play for Sporting, saying that he was psychologically affected (he and his wife ended their marriage as well) and that he couldn't stay in Portugal anymore!!!! All this to pressure Sporting to sell him!

So he moved back to Brazil, and stayed there for about 2 months, in that period no real offer was made to Sporting, who was refusing to let him go!!!

So Jardel was fuc***d! He wasn't playing, and no transfer was arranjed! So he accepted to come back and play for Sporting again! In all this period (about 3 months) many reasons and almost insults were trade by Jardel, his manager, his wife and Sporting directors! Fans insulted him on the airport many times!!! They didn't want Jardel back!!!!

Now everything is back to normal, Jardel started playing last weekend again!!!

Isn't it funny or ridiculous?!?!?

::shinji::
