STUPID REF! He tacked on WAY too much Injury Time! He allowed them to score!
Mind you the defence wasn't too good then.

View Full Version : England 1 (Owen 39) Brazil 1 (??? 45) HT a_shearer 27-05-2000, 04:27:PM STUPID REF! He tacked on WAY too much Injury Time! He allowed them to score! Mind you the defence wasn't too good then. Neutral 27-05-2000, 08:03:PM Good result today. I hope Macca gets a start on the right side against Ukraine, or at least in the middle rather than playing on the left - he's not a left sided player. How about Phillips and Heskey uprfont on Wednesday? (or should Owen and Shearer get another game to gel?) Neutral 27-05-2000, 08:06:PM Oh yes, one last thing, why does Phil Neville play for England? Oh yes....I remember, he sits on United's bench...yep...that's why.... Methinks Barry should be there, and Ben Thatcher should have been in the squad too.. Drinky UKSN 27-05-2000, 08:16:PM I am considering starting a petition: 'Get The Neville Brothers Dropped' petition. They are overrated and quite frankly, there are better England players in the depths of the Premiership - Dean Richards is a better full back than Gary or Phil Neville. PolishPower 28-05-2000, 03:05:AM I have a question, why was Owen playing in a meaningless friendly while England U-21 is getting beat by Italy in Euro competition? antithesis 28-05-2000, 05:04:AM Owen is playing to enable Liverpool supporters to look silly when they bemoan players being picked because they play for Manchester. There is an argument to defend that Keegan is Liverpool struck. Fowler has never shown himself to be international material, and who the hell is Heskey to suddenly become an England regular. Owen walks into the England side as if he has done anything this season. Neutral 28-05-2000, 05:20:AM PolishPower, Owen isn't playing for the England U21's because if he was then he wouldn't be able to play in Euro 2000 for the senior team. Antithesis, Sorry, Owen only scored against Brazil - maybe he should have scored 5 or 6 goals, then I guess he'd be worthy of a place on the England team. "Owen walks into the England side as if he has done anything this season" - yeah, sorry he was only injured for most of the season, and was the leading scorer in the EPL the last two years - so by your logic if Ronaldo was suddenly 100% fit for Brazil he wouldn't be picked because 'he didn't do anything this season' - yeah, kinda hard to score goals when you're injured.... As for Phil Neville - if Silvestre keeps this guy from United's starting eleven (a United defence that let in more goals than any team in the top six, and let in more goals this season than ANY team that has EVER won the league in England) WHY IS HE ON ENGLAND'S STARTING ELEVEN? How else can a defender who isn't even first choice for his team (who also have a cr@p defensive record) start for his national team..... As for Heskey - sorry, he only had one game against Argentina where he was man of the match not to mention a lot of goals at U21 level- definately not England material then...I mean c'mon, if you start one game for England and you're the best player in that game then surely you don't deserve to be in the England squad - I mean everyone else who is scored 6 or 7 goals in their first games for England...right? 'Fowler never shown himself to be international material' - when has he had a chance he's always been injured, he's only played 3 or 4 games, and in his first game for England he scored. When he's been fit this season he's scored. Whatever.... BelfastBoy 28-05-2000, 05:22:AM I thought Gary Neville played dreadfully, but I thought Phillips play was very good, he closed down the left side well and did not wander to far forward. Drinky UKSN 28-05-2000, 06:22:AM Impressive, weren't we? In the second half both sides fizzled out, as you'd expect from a friendly, but the passing and movement from England was world class throughout and Michael Owen showed glimpses that he is back to his best. The defence was quite solid, but their goal... shocking. Seaman decided to abstain from making any decision to stay on his line or punch clear, and decided to watch as Franca put a tame header towards the far post, because, after all, that post was being guarded by Gary Neville and there was no need to panic. Wrong! Mr Neville decided to show off his talent for handing matches to Brazilian teams again by helpfully shimmying out the way and making no attempt to block the ball. Seaman, Gary Neville, and Keown (who should have been on Franca) should take responsibility for an absolute ****-up. On the whole though, very encouraging and I can't wait for the Ukraine game when we'll hopefully have the flair of McManaman to provide that elusive final ball, and a start for Robbie Fowler. sglean 28-05-2000, 01:10:PM Lets play name two better full backs for England. They must be fit for Euro 2000 and they must play for a first rate Premier or European side involved regularly in international competition. Remember we are playing the best teams in Europe not Britain. Not such a long list is it? Campbell or Ferdinand could probably play the full back positions but my guess is England will revert to a 3-5-2. With Campbell Keown and Adams. Gary Neville was playing against world class opposition. remember it was his throw that set up the first goal and if I was the full back I wouldn't expect Seaman to mess up either. Phil Neville had a solid game but Wise basically played the same position which means he could end up going giving England that left sided midfielder who also acts as the fourth back(Le Saux's role). Hey lets start our staring 11 topic. Schumacher 28-05-2000, 01:42:PM I've just remembered Gary Neville's "skills" in the World Club Championship. Oh dear... Drinky UKSN 28-05-2000, 02:51:PM Gary Neville is that most annoying of people, a poor player at a high-profile club. Les Ferdinand is another. Better full backs, you say? Ben Thatcher of Wimbledon? Dominic Matteo should get a chance on the left, perhaps. Barry is another good left sided defender. I'd even take Lee Dixon over Gary Neville, even at his age. L1v3rP0ol 29-05-2000, 02:42:PM Uh, Drinky... Giving Matteo a start? I really don't think that's a wise decision. He has improved, but his defensive play is far from national side material. Stick to Tatcher et al. Drinky UKSN 29-05-2000, 02:59:PM Yes, but given a choice between one of the Neville brothers and Matteo, I'd go for Matteo every time. Canoe 29-05-2000, 08:56:PM Drinky - No fair in blaming Keown for that. And where do I go to sign the petition ?? Neutral - LMAO, good one about Silvestre and Phil, never thought about that. Antithesis - can one not twist your fowler statement and include Cole in that and it be exactly the same ?? Sglean - In one discussion you say 3-5-2 -> don't think so ! And in the next you guess they will rever to 3-5-2. So, which is it ?? And the full back should not expect the goalie to mess up, but then again the goalie would not expect the full back to leave the post till the danger is cleared |
