how the hell do you cross without the defens kickin it away?

is there any create a team or player mode?

Try tapping "Triangle" to attempt a header after crossing the ball. This works for me 1/5 times. Sometimes I tap "Shoot" to attempt volleys.
It is frustrating, but it does work sometimes.
I think they went from one extreme to the other. In previous crappy FIFA versions, you could score from headers/volleys from crosses too often.

Read the manual carefully ;)

Forget about creating players/teams. It's not there in the PS2 version.

Make sure you make one of your forwards make a run into the box just before you cross it. This allows the forward to get in front of the defender occasionally. Also, make sure you time your header or volley... perfecting it will take practice.
