View Full Version : Portugal set to pick SCOLARI
K3nzo 09-11-2002, 01:21:AM UEFA EURO 2004™ hosts Portugal are set to appoint a foreign coach to lead them at the finals.
National federation chairman Gilberto Madail said on Tuesday that he hoped to be able to announce the new coach by the end of November.
Press reports have repeatedly speculated that the new coach will be Luiz Felipe Scolari, who led Brazil to victory in this year's World Cup in South Korea and Japan.

Caretaker coach Agostinho Oliveira will stay on to lead Portugal in a friendly against Scotland on November 20. Agostinho Oliveira took over from Antonio Oliveira, who was sacked after Portugal's disappointing first-round exit from the World Cup.
Portugal have only ever had one foreign coach before, but he achieved considerable success. In 1966, Brazilian Otto Glória, a former Benfica and FC Porto coach, took Portugal to the FIFA World Cup semi-finals where they lost 2-1 to host nation and eventual winners England
Internazionale 09-11-2002, 08:47:AM Hope Portugal NT will improve alot from a new coach. :p
::shinji:: 09-11-2002, 09:31:AM I just hope they decide to keep Agostinho Oliveira as Scolari's assistant. I'm not a huge fan of having a foreign coach since I don't beleive a foreign coach can fully know all of another countrie's players and mentality, but with a Portuguese assistant I think it would be ok.

Also, I think that foreign coaches can look at other nation's NT jobs as :drevil: just another job :drevil: more so then a manager from the country.

very true!
...unfortunatly for us, Portugal doesn't have any good coaches IMO. Exept for Carlos Queiroz, but he wouldn't leave his job at Man. Utd to coach the NT again..

Unfortunetly... !
I wish he was the NT coach again! :(
emmer 09-11-2002, 12:46:PM i heard that it could be scolari or the 2nd on the list, carlos albert parreira, world cup '94 champion.
but parreira is doing well with corinthians and i don't wanna see he leaving the team. (H)
K3nzo 09-11-2002, 06:37:PM My pick would be Carlos Queiroz (coaching ManUtd), but i consider that Scolari as 1st coach and Agostinho Oliveira assisting him is a very good choice as well! Scolari knows about football, he's strict and Agostinho Oliveira knows a lot about this generation of Portuguese players and the youngsters (Sub21) as well!!! ;)

I think we definitely need a foreign coach with strong personality. Scolari is that guy. We need him to get rid of the prima-donnas, the guys that say they don't want to be in the NT to lose pretige (Figo), the players who refuse to defend and run, the players who only give it all hen they're playing the best teams ni the world and despise the others... We need a man that has no lobbies controling his actions, someone that picks the best, wherever they're playing now, whatever their age is!
Look no further than the success our national handball and volleyball teams achieved recently, once they got the crop of the foreign coaches! The Cuban dude that coaches our volleyball NT went to several games and just said: "I want that guy, that guy and that guy". I don't see a portuguese coach doing what he did: putting a 17yo kid on the starting line-up, in his 1st cap, IN A WORLD CUP!!! That's what we need Scolari to do, and I think he'll deliver! ;)
Btw, I just heard on TSF Madaíl saying that his other options for the job are Parreira and... Sven Goran Eriksson!
::shinji:: 10-11-2002, 04:05:AM I think I would actually prefer Eriksson to Scolari....I just think that Eriksson has a more intimate knowledge of our football and I know he's a big admirer of us. Scolari might be too, but I don't know..
Whatever though, any of them would be better that some of the others they had been talking about, Fernando Santos, M.J., etc....I guess as long as we get a coach that isn't controlled by Olivedesportos, I'll be happy!:)
emmer 10-11-2002, 09:21:AM hmmm.. just want to say that even after the world cup i don't like scolari
i wouldn't like to see scolari coaching my team :) ;)
actually i'm posting it because i read infesta talking about volleyball and i must say WOOO HOOO! i wasn't here during the world championship so i say now... WOO HOO!! :D :rockman:

and didn't Eriksson coach Benfica early on in his career? he knows abit about the portuguese set up
but i doubt he'll leave (or be allowed to leave) England
Yes, he did. He could be a good choice too, since he's a fan of our football style, he speaks the language and knows how things work here.
He IS an option. Madaíl knows that Sven has been having problems lately with the FA(?) and already considered leaving his current job. Yes, I'm also surprised by it, but this info comes from straight up, so...
Congrats on the world title, Emmer. :)
mufc_daddy 12-11-2002, 12:45:AM This is slightly off the topic but it is to do with Portugal. Has Figo actually retired from playing for Portugal?? Because some magazines i have read have stated that he has but i thought otherwise.

No, mufc_daddy, he said he will retire if some things don't change fast. Although I don't agree with some of his statements, like not wanting to come here to lose prestige, I got to agree with the man - our Federation is a disgrace. Almost 6 months to chose a new coach.:kader: The clock is ticking and we're losing precious time.
mufc_daddy 13-11-2002, 12:00:AM Thanks for answering. It would be a shame for him to retire on a low note.
