WRIGHT ARSENAL LINK

Ipswich keeper and Newcastle target Richard Wright, who was placed on the transfer list at Portman Road last week, has been linked with a move to Highbury.

Wright has failed to agree a new contract with Ipswich, who would rather sell him than lose him on a free next summer. Indeed, they've been linked with Norwich's Andy Marshall and Turkish international Recber Rustu.

The England international has also been linked with moves to Chelsea, Celtic and Sunderland.

Part of the anticipated £5m deal could see Arsenal reserve keeper Alex Manninger move the other way.

Manninger has allegedly been told by the Austrian FA that a place in the national team is unlikely unless he is playing regular first team football.

FIRST AGAIN

It was over two weeks' ago that we reported that Duncan Ferguson had been offered to Sunderland and Glasgow Rangers by agents, as Bobby Robson prepared for the arrival of Jan Koller of Anderlecht.

Now other sources have caught up and even included the quotes that we had from Rangers chairman David Murray. ie "Ferguson is being actively offered about at the moment but we have not even made an inquiry about him - we told his agents we were not interested."

What the other sources haven't quite yet realised is that Everton seem quite prepared to take Ferguson back.

MPENZA LATEST

Emile Mpenza, a Newcastle target, although tell me a striker not linked with the club at the moment, is attracting a number of clubs and Napoli are the latest to make a move.

The Italian club have made a bid of £10m which is £3m less than Newcastle are believed to be prepared to pay.

Back in training with his club Schalke 04 he said :"I want to play here in the Bundesliga, but I now one day I'll play in the Premier League- that's my aim."

So it would seem that he would prefer to come to England rather than Italy.

ROBINSON TARGETTED

As numerous strikers are linked with a move to Newcastle United, we can reveal that United's highly-rated 21-year-old Paul Robinson has become a wanted man.

The £1 million rated attacker is interesting Trevor Francis' Birmingham City and Neil Warnock's Sheffield United.

Sunderland born Robinson has withdrawn a transfer request, however, it hasn't put off interested clubs.

VALENCIA NEW BID?

Valencia, who have already had a bid of £4.5m for Didier Domi turned down, are expected to come back with a new bid of £5m.

Newcastle, would make a profit of £2m and they could well be tempted to cash in.

With the likes of Warren Barton, Aaron Hughes and Andy Griffin all able to play at left back, they have more than enough cover in that position despite the sale of Alessandro Pistone to Everton.

HELDER WAITS ON RETURN

Helder, who returned to Deportivo La Coruna at the end of his loan spell, has told Newcastle that he wants to return to the North-East.

Helder played 11 games on loan but would have played a lot more if it was not for injury. Now fully fit after receiving treatment in Portugal , he said, "I want to come back to Newcastle and I have told the Deportivo chairman this.

"But they have told me I must wait a little longer before things are sorted."

"I have had a lot of good work done on my injuries here in Portugal and I am now 100 per cent fit."

Newcastle are prepared to pay £1m for the player, who was recently capped by Portugal, but Deportivo want £4m so a deal will have to be thrashed out between the clubs before he can return.

SILVIO LOOKS EAST

Silvio Maric, who has not been seen in Newcastle since he failed to turn up at the airport for the end of season tour to Trinidad and Tobago, has told Fenerbahce that he can leave Newcastle on a free.

The Turkish club have been in contact with Newcastle regarding Maric and have been told that he will command a fee.

The Croatian who was signed by Ruud Gullit for £3.5m will be sold by Robson but he is defiantly not available on a free, Robson said: "We have had an inquiry about Silvio, but it was not a concrete offer."

"The club in question wanted to know about his availability but, as things stand, he is still a Newcastle United player.

"He is not a free-transfer player and there will be a fee involved if and when he leaves the club.

However, if we get a reasonable offer then we are ready to consider it."
