Hmm . . . so I hit the local import shop yesterday after seeing the WeDoIt patch info posted here and traded WE6 for WE6FE. Got home, and 20 minutes of Rip-Patch-Burn later (see http://winning_eleven_6.tripod.com for details), I fired up my patched CD and started drooling.
I ended up only playing 1 match as Real Madrid vs. ManU before Real Life took over, but I noticed a number of minor, but quite welcome changes to the game:
1. The first and most obvious thing is the WeDoIt patch. The uniforms look fabulous, with all the various patches and logos, down to the kit manufacturer's logo on the socks. Outstanding.
2. The menu translations are wonderful. I had been playing with the Do the Evolution Tools (http://dte-ng.issextreme.com/scripts/ps2.php) and had found all the menu graphics a couple days ago, but hadn't had time to do anything with it. The WeDoIt guys did a bang-up job with the menus.
3. Game tweaks:
3.1: New ball physics: Others have noticed this before, but it was immediately apparent to me on the first goal I scored . . . Roberto Carlos, streaking down the left side, sent a beautiful cross into the box. I was amazed when the ball curled away from the goal mouth toward the penalty spot where I mashed the square button to have Raul nod it past Barthez. Real 1, ManU 0. Also, there were numerous times where I noticed the ball float (on goal kicks) and curl (Beckham corner kick, Figo long crosses) in ways it never did in WE6.
3.2: Improved goalkeeper animations: Others have noted this as well, but the 'keepers are much more life-like. To see Casillas make a diving save, then without getting up reach out to bat away a weak second attempt was amazing.
3.3: Slower game pace: Since I've only played one game, I'm not 100% sure of this, but it did seem to me that the pace of the game overall was (slightly) slower. Which is a good thing. I felt the game was more realistic that way.
3.4: Better ball control and possession: Someone commented several months back on this forum that they wanted to be able to hold the ball better with skilled players. To paraphrase the post, "Zidane doesn't pass the ball until he's ready. He stands still and holds the ball, shielding it with his body, until he's ready to pass." Now, in WE6, I was not very good at holding the ball. Almost every time I had the ball, if I wasn't moving, the ball would be stolen by the opposition. In just a few minutes of play with WE6FE, I noticed that when I was controlling the ball, my player would use his body (and even his arms!) to create space and block defenders from accessing the ball while standing or moving slowly.
3.5: Improved CPU AI: Usually, when I concede a goal, it isn't a good thing . . . others have noticed that playing defense in WE6FE is more difficult, and I'll second that. However, when I would blow coverage in WE6, I could usually tell it was happening, and bring my 'keeper out before the attacker could catch up to a through-ball . . . heh. Well, that happened vs. ManU. My defense let a through-ball past the back line, and as Casillas was sliding to grab the ball, Solskjaer beat him to the ball by a nose and chipped the ball into the net. I'd never seen the CPU do anything like that in WE6. Usually, in close encounters like that, the 'keeper always got the ball and the attacker would go into the stumbling animation.
3.6: New animations: I suppose new animations are expected, but to see one of my players trip up on his own feet as I tried to change direction while being challenged . . . it looked like TV.
WE6FE is quite excellent, and I'm looking forward to discovering more subtle goodies the more I play. What bits of "eye candy" have others seen? What interesting animations, or new/improved AI have others experienced?
Great job, Konami, and great job WeDoIt team. I just hope Konami does the right thing with WE6 International for the US market and doesn't give us the WE6 engine (or worse) . . . We want the WE6FE engine (and the Master League)! It doesn't seem to me that there is any real problem translating WE6FE to English . . . WeDoIt has already shown that. The biggest issue for Konami is the licensing of leagues/players. I'll buy WE6I either way to support Konami, but I'd prefer to be able to just play WE6I, not have to continue to play WE6FE with it's excellent gameplay and WeDoIt graphic goodness.
