View Full Version : The unknown music thread
maddog1983 13-01-2003, 04:45:PM i have been meaning to do this for ages ..... this thread is for people to post music that they like which is local to their country or region thus giving the rest of the world a chance to download some songs they would have never of other wise heard of .... i know a few people have mentioned things like this before but tough shizen i am doing it again :D
MY local bands which are worth a listen
John Butler trio
Ballpoint
Bodyjar ...
they are all aussie young bands see what you think ;)
INFESTA 13-01-2003, 06:38:PM I'm going to post the name of the bands with a song which I think could be a good "entrance" for those who don't know them.
From Portugal, I recommend:
Tara Perdida - "Nasci Hoje"
A classic poppy/punk/hc act. Their frontman has been on the scene for over 20 years.
Denis also recommends this band! (H)
Primitive Reason - "Seven Fingered Friend"
Probably the best ska/dub/hc act of the world, after Sublime. Did that sound prententious? Then dld their whole 1995 album, "Alternative Prison", and then we'll talk. Keep in mind that they played this genre long before the 90's ska explosion, or Sublime being known outside California.
Ornatos Violeta - "Ouvi Dizer"
Hard to put a tag on this band. To the english audience, they have against them the fact that they sing in Portuguese, but they wrote some of the most beautiful and touching songs the world has heard. They'd be giants if they had sang in english (fortunately, they haven't). If you've ever had a serious love gone wrong, you'll love their poems.
Blasted Mechanism - "Atom Bride Theme"
This song should be played in all parties (actually, it is, at least here). Insane raveadelic journey, played with real instruments and a... whistle. :shades:
Tédio Boys / The Parkinsons
The Tédio Boys died and The Parkinsons rose from their ashes. Punk à-lá Sex Pistols. One of the best live acts I've witnessed, directly out from 1977. They kick The Strokes, The Vines, The White Stripes, The (I)NC, and any other band started with "The".
There's plenty more, but if you listen to just one of those songs, I'd be happy. ;)
mhflierman 13-01-2003, 07:12:PM To be honest I hate dutch music. It's such a pathetic language to sing in. Of course the nation is hooked to the dutch version of Pop Idol, but I can't stand it. The best dutch rock band apart from the Golden Earring of whom you might have heard is Kane, they sing in English.
Some songs that are quite nice are:
"Keep My Head Down"
"Hold On To The World"
"Rain Down On Me"
"Damn Those Eyes"
You might want to listen to 'em.
rhizome17 13-01-2003, 11:52:PM Yeah, this is a good idea(H)
Larry is probably more with it regarding the latest NZ music than I am, but for quality New Zealand bands that I listen to:
1. Head Like a Hole - if you like loud, fast music with a twist, get this now. Recommended Song: Faster Hooves (also an interesting cover of Springsteens 'I'm on Fire')
2. The 3D's - one of the bands that supported Nirvana when I saw them in 1992, they held their own, different to Nirvana but complemented them well. Recommended Song: Hey Seuss
3. Salmonella Dub - have been around awhile now, but just seem to get better. Recommended Song: Anything
4. DLT - maori influenced hip-hop, and hence more political than the US stuff. Recommended Song: Chains (with Che Fu)
I could also have mentioned Pacifier and the Datsuns, but I think they have more of a following overseas than the above four. As for Pacifier, they haven't done anything decent since the US Record exec's forced them to change their name from Shihad, which to them sounded too much like Jihad:rolleyes:
But anything recorded under the name Shihad is quite good.
AhmedK 14-01-2003, 12:02:AM Whats that song by that rock band from Sweden??Here in america i know one lyric goes "everything everythings gonna be alright alright"I think.
eLeMeNOhPee 14-01-2003, 03:34:AM Well from around here i'd have to say the best bands are definently Bodyjar (awesome band), One Dollar Short although thier old stuff was so much better, Antiskeptic, Seraphs Coal but they are playing their last gig this weekend in Melbourne :(

i dont know how big they are else where but i love pop-techno-punk-alternative
Regurgitator ---- Fat Cop or Kung Fo sing
the Stoneglo ---- probably a bit hard to find these guys but if you can try "less than zero"
Machine Gun Fellatio ---- MOFO on a motorcycle or unsent letter
hermolt 14-01-2003, 05:36:AM For Regurgitator I'd have to say better songs IMO are 'I sucked a lot of cock to get where I am' and 'I Piss Alone'.
I also love Sunk Loto - 'Submission' or 'Sunken Eyes' and Testeagles 'Agent 99' or 'Like No Other'.
