why does israel participate in european tournaments? they're not even in europe! i have no idea why. oh God, don't tell me it's the holy land crusades thing.

i mean, i can understand russia and turkey. at least part of them is in europe. but israel and armenia and georgia? i don't understand.

My undrestanding is that after World War II Israel was included in all the European organisations for broadcasting, sports etc. I know this is true of broadcasting (see Eurovision Song Contest for one example), and would guess the same was true for UEFA. Anybody know any more?
