they're good and all but thay lack the greatness of a Spielberg or Lucas.
INFESTA 14-02-2003, 12:34:AM Martin Scorsese and Roman Polanski are, at least, as good as Spielberg. But, above all, you have Almodovar!! What else do you want, man?
I hope Pedro gets it, for the good of cinema itself. Then they'll rerun his movies, which are as good as they are weird and different. "All about my Mother" is one of the best movies I've ever seen!
Scorsese will win it, though. Not bcs his movie is the best, but bcs he should have won it a long time ago.

I hope that was meant to be sarcastic.

So do u really think that he should win it for that?
I thought the Oscars were for the best of the year, and personally if he is not the best of the year i think he shouldnt win it.

Like it or not both Spielberg and Lucas have some of the most money-making movies of all time. And thats greatness.

money...[is]...greatness.
That's one of the dumbest things I've seen anyone write.

Unfortunately thats not how the Oscars work. If a film is great, but doesn't carry the right 'message' appropriate for the 'time', then it won't win. Too much lobbying, too much pressure on the judges, so if there was a great film this year, with an anti-war message, it wouldn't have a hope of winning.

More often than not, it is a sign of great marketing, not greatness per se. The Phantom Menace made alot of money, but the film itself was terrible. The 'more money' equals 'greatness' link is invalid. There are plenty of brilliant non-Hollywood and non-US films that don't make much money. It does not mean that they are not great, just because 40 million Americans don't see it.

No, that's why I said that:

I do think Scorsese will get it, not bcs his movie is the best, but bcs he should have won it a long time ago. The academy usually works like that. ;)

C'mon people lets "get with it".
Believe it or not, in the movie industry money is a very important factor in determining greatness.
And those who say it doesnt are liars.
And ok, Phantom Menace wasnt The best movie ever made, but it must have had something, not just good marketing, to have attracted so any people.

Star Wars is a cult and thats why makes that kind of money. And even if "clones" was worse than "phantom" the third one will still make a huge ammount of money.
Cults make it always.
Its like Star Trek. too many fans.
and I also think that Scorcese will win it cause its like they "own" him an oscar though he does not deserves it. I'd like to see Almodovar win and make a new "peace speech":rockman: but I didnt see Talk to Her and I did see Chicago, then I'd like to see Marshall win cause its a really great movie.
another guy that does not deserves an oscar is Daniel Day-Lewis. what a crazy guy. I think he's like that (the butcher, his character in GoNY) in real life.
yoyo913 15-02-2003, 07:27:AM I thought the bad guy in gangs of new york was AMAZING!!

Lucas didnt direct Empire or Return of the Jedi - the more grossing of all the Star Wars trilogys.
