I use 5. All manual, L1+O crossing also.
It just means when you do long passes (using O) the CPU makes it's best idea of where you wanted that ball and it puts it at the players feet for you. I use the L1 and the RAS (right analog stick) to do long passes so, I put the pass where I want it. Try 5 and see how you like it. If you don't go back to 4

Whenever I try 5, often enough, the power fills up completely even though I stopped adding power. Any ideas on how I could correct this problem? Also, how do you perform the two other types of crosses?
Cheers

You need to be a bit more specific than that. Are you using the analog sticks or the O button to cross.
The other two crosses are the same as if you use the non L1+ crosses. L1+O for high crosses, L1+O,O for waist high crosses or driving the ball into the area, L1+O,O,O for ground crosses. (note you are not letting go of L1, you are holding it down while you single, double or triple hit O).

I am using both the analog sticks + L1 when trying 5. Doesn't using L1+O limit you to only 8 directions of possible long passing if you are using 5? I am currently playing with auto long passes where I only have to press O to long pass and auto-cross when I am passed the PK area.

Heh, so what are you using again. Seems like you are using two sticks on level 5 and you are using auto long passes and auto cross. Kinda confused me there.
The reason you are filling up your cross bar is because you are using both sticks at the same time. When you want to a long pass, release the direction stick (LAS) and use the long cross stick to power up and direct (RAS). If you use RAS while holding LAS the bar will fill up (ofcourse, I'm talking about all of this on level 5 crossing).
I think I misundestand your L1+O question. L1+O (on 4 and 5) doesn't change (much) from what O on other settings (1,2,3). All it means is that if O was your method of doing long passes, you can still do it even when you are at the corner flag of your opponents goal. For example, you get the ball in the corner, you can't cross it, whatever. You want to switch the fields cos you see your half back making his way forward on the other side of the pitch. now, if you use level 5 (or 4) you can hit the cross to that player by either using O or the RAS. If you are not using either, when you hit O what does that do? Crosses the ball into the box. Level 4 and 5 give you that freedom of specifically when you want to hit the ball into the box or when you don't (when you do hold L1 and hit O, that doesn't prevent you from using O to hit a ball into the box..the accuracy/effectiveness is not what it could be).
Hope i didn't confuse.
