rascricket 23-03-2003, 06:12:AM Brother, listen.....I'm kinda hardcore, I'm on basically my third unit. We're gonna get ya that fixed for free so hear me:D .....I got my first Disc Read Error after about 7-8 months...I've done so much research on this Brandon, it make my brain hurt cuz for the moment I have a working unit so goin' back is AHHHHRRGG! but here goes...I called and stood FIRM sayin' (politely, mind ya) I had'nt done ANYTHING out of normal operation and for a unit of this price, I deserve a longer life.....if they don't ask ya to hold while they talk to a manager, ask to speak to one......politely explain yourself, this is a brand new game---not too old unit, etc. and they'll WAIVE the fee, bro........see for me this was only the beginning of a crazy saga....first they sent me back my unit with a new laser---one month later,DRE.....no, not DR. Dre:confused: .......lol....so I sent that in for a REFURBISHED unit.......Bastards sent back the same unit, fixed but doomed----so I played that into the FOKIN' GROUND, I did---bout 3 months, sent it in and now I"ve got a refurbed unit that when I put in WE6I, it goes to the browser and clicks most the time before it starts....so its VERY possible mine will soon fail..........Fokers will be sendin' this Ras ANOTHA' one --no doubt...so W/B -let me know how it goes:)
iceboy 23-03-2003, 08:41:AM tried putting it in a vertical position?
Internazionale 23-03-2003, 10:49:AM EDIT : hm..if you still have a warranty, why don't you send them back to Sony ?
rascricket 23-03-2003, 12:00:PM Beleive it or not, but even after the warranty you can call.....they know they've got a problem.....my only hope is that you did'nt MOD for system, BrandonBett
Perles 23-03-2003, 12:36:PM I also burned one out, just bought a new one......sux, but I played that thing out
flamingwookie 23-03-2003, 01:26:PM Yeah, so I was having disc read errors over the last few weeks, to the point where I couldn't play at all. Totally sucked.
Then, I found this (Google for "ps2 disc read error"):
http://www.geocities.com/djyayo/faq.html
Which suggested cleaning with some compressed air. Since I use the "knife trick" and run the PS2 without the tray cover, I tried simply blowing a bunch of air into the unit. Now, it works again.
Just my $0.02
BrandonBett02 23-03-2003, 09:04:PM well i called back in, and said "miss, im just wondering if it will be better for me to buy a new system that doesnt get disc read errors and can actually turn on, then paying 103 dollers to get it fixed which could probley break again. and she told me to send it in and they'll wave the fee.

I too had a broken Playstaion 2. After about six months, which is the norm, I started experiencing disc read problems, and then shortly after that it would not read discs at all. Besides the disc read errors I could also hear a strange noise, a grinding sound.
If you have these same problems then it is possible to fix your system by yourself. The laser which reads the discs is attached to a metal pole by a small, white plastic piece. The laser slides back and forth along the pole while reading the disc. What happens is that after about six months the little plastic piece will get worn down and it will no longer slide properly. It will get caught out of place, this causes the grinding noise. Because the laser won't slide problerly it will not read the disc correctly. What I did was take apart the playstation, get into the area where the laser is and repair the plastic piece. To repair it you have to drill a very small whole through it and then run a tiny piece of metal wire(take a twist tie and use that wire)through the whole and rap it around the metal pole and tie it. The metal wire will then hold the white plastic piece in place alowing the laser to function properly. That should do the trick. It may also be necessary to adjust the litlle nobs which control the frequency of the laser, but maybe not.
I did this with the help of my dad, it took a couple of hours because we were being very careful. But once finished I realized how easy it really was and my system has worked flawlessly ever since. I don't remember the web site where I learned how to do this, but there are many. I suggest you search the web for "playstaion 2 disc read error" or something like that. Find the info you need and then fix it, it really is quite simple.
However if you are still under warranty then you should send it in. If not DO THIS!! But you should make sure that this is the problem before you take the system apart. If you need any more help then you can e-mail me at asbmckay@hotmail.com
I would hate for Sony's poor quality merchandice to get in the way of you playing this fantastic game. Good luck
