first off, the game is amazing. everything i'd hoped it would be and more.

two things: i played the hell out of the old ISS '98, so i figure the key to scoring long shots is to master curving the ball. is that true?

second, what's the trick to using 'apply pressure' (x button) to disposses the opponent? i'm sure i'm missing something. do you hold it down or press it at a certain time or do you combine it with the slide tackle?

Indeed the game is amazing!

Anyway... are you talking about freekicks or just taking a shot from distance? Freekicks: sometimes you can use curve, sometimes just raw power, other times just placement. there have been a couple threads on these already but here is a quick reference:

http://www.soccergaming.tv/showthread.php?threadid=64825

Shots: basically get open! You can't personally apply curve to your shots, the shots do have a natural curve to them.

Defense... to steal, you don't have to hold/press X. You have run at the ball per say. Instead of running around (moving) pilons, you are running into them! Sounds weird, don't know how to describe it well! X is more like a guiding tool which chases the ball whever it goes. It's not like most soccer games where you press a button to steal, you actually have to get you body in there and take the ball away. You just have to judge the right time to use it because depending on the situation, you can use it to steal the ball. Hopefully someone else can explain this better since I am doing a pretty shiznat job right now!

Cheers

yeah, i'm very impressed. match flow and player movement is unlike anything else out there. i wish there were more competition modes, but it doesn't take anything away from gameplay.

i'm talking about long distance shots. i'm doing all right with free kicks and. but long distance accuracy is eluding me. thanks for the thread and the advice.

I don't know if the controls are 100% identical, but on PES2 you use the Square button to 'press' the attacker with another player. If you are talking about tackling the guy then that is all in the timing. You need to get your guy to defend the ball and press X to step in and take the ball off the attacker. You must be close enough to steal the ball, you're player won't go chasing after the ball.

Shooting. As far as I can tell there is a natural curve on the ball when taking in-play shots. You can choose which part of the goal you want the player to shoot at between pressing shoot and the player striking the ball. I'm not 100% sure of the directions, it says in the manual though.

the manual wasn't much of a help. i've got aiming down, i just can't seem to get a good balance of power and accuracy.

i've been putting all these suggestions about defense into play and i think i'm getting the hang of it.

thanks.

That depends on your players attributes mostly. Obviously players with higher shot acc and power will be more successful than others. Shot tech is important here too, a higher rating on this and the more likely the player is to get a difficult shot on target.

I'm not sure if you are aware that the shooting bar represents the height of the shot and not the power. If you load it right up you'll shoot over more often than not, A tap and you'll shoot it along the floor. I made this assumption when I began playing, and having only played FIFA, SWOS, and Kick-Off 2 (class game) football games it took a bit of effort to get used to it (mainly due to it signifying shot power in FIFA, SWOS and KO2 didn't have a power/height meter)

i made the same assumption. i like the way konami has done this and i'm really getting a feel for the shooting. the 'keeper AI is extremely realistic as well.

The keeper AI is brilliant. I like the way that the keeper sometimes stands rooted to the spot when you hit a shot that catches him by surprise and off-balance. :)
