Breaking news from the RIAA !
New Secret Weapon Against Music Piracy
RIAA BREAKTHROUGH
Music Industry Unveils New Piracy-Proof Format: A Black, Plastic Disc With Grooves On It
Music bosses have unveiled a revolutionary new recording format that they hope will help win the war on illegal file sharing, which is thought to be costing the industry millions of dollars in lost revenue.
Nicknamed the 'Record,' the new format takes the form of a black, vinyl disc measuring 12 inches in diameter, which must be played on a specially designed turntable.
"We can state with absolute certainty that no computer in the world can access the data on this disc," said spokesman Brett Campbell. "We are also confident that no-one is going to be able to produce pirate copies in this format without going to a heck of a lot of trouble. This is without doubt the best anti-piracy invention the music industry has ever seen."
As part of the invention's rigorous testing process, the designers gave some discs to a group of teenage computer experts who regularly use file-swapping software such as Limewire and gnutella and who admit to pirating music CDs.
Despite several days of trying, none of them were able to hack into the disc's code or access any of the music files contained within it. "It's like, really big and stuff," said Doug Flamboise, one of the testers. "I couldn't get it into any of my drives. I mean, what format is it? Is it, like, from France or something?"
Invention: Teenage computer hackers struggled to access the new disc. In the new format, raw audio data in the form of music is encoded by physically etching grooves onto the vinyl disc. The sound is thus translated into variations on the disc's surface in a process that industry insiders are describing as 'completely revolutionary' and 'stunningly clever.' To decode the data stored on the disc, the listener must use a special player which contains a 'needle' that runs along the grooves on the record surface, reading the indentations and transforming the movements back into audio that can be fed through loudspeakers.
Even Shawn Fanning, the man who invented Napster, admits the new format will make file swapping much more difficult. "I've never seen anything like this," he told reporters. "How does it work?" Pirates: Their days are numbered. As rumours that a Taiwanese company has been secretly developing a 12 inch wide, turntable-driven, needle-based, firewire drive remain unconfirmed, it would appear that the music industry may, at last, have found the pirate-proof format it has long been searching for.

The Japanese probably had this kind of technology in the 60's. :D

I don't know why, but I can't see this idea taking off unless the sound quality is better and it offers more to us than a CD. Who is going to pay for a new player and then these discs which no doubt will probably cost more to produce, just so the artists don't lose money. They will probably stick CD's up, and then lower the cost of these things, then when they get popular, stick the price up.

Trust me it wont happen

Bands are actually infavour of having their music being 'shared' and some company labels are looking towards making music 'shared' on the internet at a price lets say of $1 people pay as they like - your garanteed music quality and you download exactly what you want which makes a difference from things like Kazaa 70% downloads are real.

I have gone through the BETA-VHS revoultion, the LASER DISC - DVD revoultion the Tape-CD revoultion and the current CD-Mini Disc-MP3 revoultion its one thing I know its that some fads or trends dont last.

Xbox was supposed to be unhackable, and it was literally raped in 4 months.

I too give it 1 month before they find away around it. Hackers these days are amazing.

On the other hand, when will the RIAA learn, they'll never win. They should save themselves money by not spending it on protection because there's ways around everything.

Of course the hackers will never crack it if they don't have the instrument that plays the disc. I can just picture them trying to shove a record into the cd drive.

To the Inept CD Companies.

Give up.

Those three gaywads you got to try crack your 'records' we're probably not as nerdy as they may have seemed.

If you get about, a internet worth of hackers, cons, god knows what else then you're gonna lose.

How about you pull your hand out of your trousers, lower the prices, don't be gay and make cd's actually worth buying :)

If it plays sound, then there's gonna be losers (technically winners after they make the CD fags look dumb, again) who'll spend day and night recording the sound that comes out of the speakers, whack it on the comp and distribute it :)

CD Companies, now officially stands for: Complete Dickhead Companies :).

EMI: Em I Inept? ('Em' pronounced 'Am' :|)

I am not exactly worried, it'll take them forever to produce the crap, and then getting people to buy it will be a challenge. Not all will go that way, and therefor they're plan will ultimately fail :).

Exactly! The soundblaster Live (along with most other cards probably) has a "what you hear" setting in which it will record anything fed into the cards input...actually you could also set it to wav recording as well...all you need is a decent player for whatever format they come up with and feed the out put into ya pc.

Personally I think this whole article is a wind up, they are describing vinyl records! ...it's a joke that is making fun of the recording industrys lack of ability to come up with a way to combat piracy and so they go back to using old records :D

My views on music piracy:
If it is two or three songs on an album, I feel that is ok, as a taster. But to download a whole album is taking the piss IMO.

Vagegast
12-04-2003, 03:26:AM
See if it's a new dude on the scene nobody is anticipating the new album. but if it's 50's or dmx's new album, people are gonna be all over it with bootlegging and all that. and they usually blow on their first album and get rich. so if they sell 250.000 less copies than normal. what's that gonna do? it aint gonna effect the money you already made. and btw, artists make money on tours and s hit. it's the companies that profit off record-sales.

also, underground artists nor the DJs make no money whatsoever selling mixtapes.

More **** from the RIAA

The Recording Industry Association of America has shifted the on-line fight for control over their media to a whole new level by announcing that they are suing individual students who set-up LAN based file sharing services at their colleges.
The announcement comes as no surprise to many in the industry as the RIAA has warned it will be forced to resort to going after individuals it beleives are responsible for "large-scale distribution of music recordings over the Internet".

The RIAA has filed suit against four students already, two from Rensselear Polytechnic Institute (RPI), one from Michigan Technological University (MTU) anfd another from Princeton University. The students are accused of utilizing the computer networks at their colleges to distribute millions of copyrighted songs to others at the same university. The RIAA stated that these services are "Just like Napster" and seeks to put an end to these services as they did with Napster, calling on the same legal prosecution.

"The court ruled that Napster was illegal and shut it down. These systems are just as illegal and operate in just the same manner. And just like Napster, they hurt artists, musicians, songwriters, those who invest in their work, and the thousands of others who work to bring music to the public." - said RIAA president Cary Sherman.

What was not reported however was how the RIAA determined that these services were infringing on their copyrights, and how they were able to verify that these services existed considering they were local to the schools and not publicly accessible on the world wide web.

The RIAA is seeking damages of up to $150,000 per song on the services in addition to attorneys' fees of course.

The reaction to this move by students and consumers alike is uncertain, but if more students were to join in the ban of the purchasing CD's as a boycott, it is extremely likely the RIAA would simply contribute this loss of sales to piracy also.

Where there is a will there is a way

It's time record companys wake up and smell the bacon and realise why people download MP3's. It's simple, lower the price of cd's and there would be a lot more people buying them. In Ireland the average price for a cd is E25, so if you buy 4 cd's, it costs about E100, criminal.

i do still buy music cds tho, but very rarely. about 2 - 3 cds a year. after all the original ones are still better of qualities. but as many ppl said over and over again, they should concentrate on lowering the price of cds so every consumer thinks the cds are worthy to buy. they dont even have to lower the price to be as cheap as pirated cds, imo. personally i just cant beat the feeling after everytime i bought an orignal cd. it makes u feel good.
