Joe, you are almost right. Australian Rules Football is played with an oval ball (about the size of a gridiron ball i.e. smaller than a rugby ball) and is played on an oval pitch. The ball is handled but when running with it, the ball must be bounced on the floor every 5-6 yards. Passing the ball is done a'la volleyball style, or by kicking. If a kick is cleanly caught it is like making a mark in your own 22 in rugby union. This allows you to make an unhindered kick in an attemt to gain position or kick at goal. Unlike rugby, you can be in front of the ball, as in gridiron. It's a good game with minimal rules, you can only be sent off for punching the ref!

It's become quite a popular sport in the UK for insoniacs (5a.m. on Saturday morning). Try the satellite or cable listings for the unusual world-wide sport slots and you'll probably find it with Gaelic football and underwater icehockey (it does exist!)
