View Full Version : The true 'UNITED'

night

Anyone heard this news? I read it in MATCH recently.
Man Utd are in court trying to register the name 'United' as their trademark.. in a bid in order 2 stop the sale of man utd unofficial merchendise. (H) (H)
This means that Newcastle, West ham, Leeds and Sheffield can no longer be called 'United' or else they will face legal action :D
THERES ONLY 1 UNITED (H) (H) (H)

Thaz a stupid idea. U cannot take the name from a team. Thaz like taking the Milan from AC Milan or the Rovers from Blackburn Rovers. Although I do like Man.U that is just plain out of order and stupid. Besides that story's from MATCH! It is probably a joke from thier behalf. Please excuse me if I'm wrong!

What a load of bollocks. If Man united want to throw their money away on stupid court cases then we'll fight. This is ****ing rediculers. There are dozens of team with United so Man U don't have no right to take that away the selfish wankers.

The main purpose of buying the name is to stop the sale of unofficial man utd merchendise.. not to own the word..
But owning it also wont do bad (H)
We are the one and ONLY UNITED

Also, this could get in the way

Newcastle UNITED was formed in 1881, they entered the league in 1893

Manchester UNITED was formed in 1878, HOWEVER, they were called Newton Heath until 1902.

Giving Newcastle United, the older 'United' the right of way to the name.

The others may be even older.

Not just England. They own Europe too. :D

Next they will be telling the city of Manchester to change their name.

Man U's legal advisors should join the spice girls. They could be stupid spice. :D

Don't worry, a judge will never allow a word like 'united' to be held by one company. It's like ONE organizations claiming the word 'organization.'

22-04-2003, 11:46:AM
Isnt it stupid Man United having United anyway. The title 'United', as far as i know has been used when a town or city is united. Like when newcastle were formed from two clubs from newcastle. This made Newcastle UNITED the only pro club from Newcastle. The only exceptions i know to this rule of united are ManUre n SheffUnited. To me it just seems a bit stupid that a Team is called United when the city is divided in which local club they support :(

Bobby
22-04-2003, 11:51:AM
True, City are also in Manchester.

this is the most stupid and selfish kind of idea that i've heard for a long long time.. they do not own the word "UNITED"...

mhflierman
22-04-2003, 02:31:PM
I doubt it is even possible to register a name like united.... It isn't even a name it just a part of a name... "Manchester United" means nothing more then united people, clubs merged into one club; "Manchester United FC" You can't own the word "United", that would be stupid, you might as well try to own the word "football club" then.... If thi sis true then it a sad move by ManUtd, or should I know add the (c) behing it???

finger
22-04-2003, 02:58:PM
The simply fact of the matter is that this would never go through as Man U can claim no ownership over the term United, none whatsoever.

And even if they could, it's an ambigous term, and hence would'nt be theirs, only distinctive terms "Coca-Cola", "McDonalds" can be owned.

GO NEWCASTLE UNITED!!!!!!!!!!

I mean the Aus version.

hehe. technically manchester united should not be called "manchester united" seeing as there still is another top-flight club in manchester.

anyway in france (andother countries) everyone just calls them Manchester !

Who cares?! Real Madrid are THE most famous of the "Real" (royal I think it means) spanish clubs, you don't see them trying to copyright the word Real?

ryan_goal
22-04-2003, 09:02:PM
true. spanish concentrate more on the quality of football they play, where as english concentrate more on commercial advertising their football. however, both sides got what they want. La Liga is the best league, as EPL is probably the most popular and recognised league.

i dont agree with that. most mancunians support man utd, although most of city's support comes from the stockport area and moss side

Man utd in salford, stretford, etc and the city centre is 50/50

man utd even have the manchester coat of arms on the club blazers. i'm sure the city of manchester would only let Manchester's true football club have that...:p

Did you know that "Real" was only added to a Spanish clubs name after 50 years of existence? Hell their not even recognised as "REAL" in Spain. Basque club, Real Sociedad is known as Real.

Hmm, I have to disagree with you with La Liga being the best. I hand that over to Serie A.
