Bosnich was found guilty by the FA

The Football Association has given goalkeeper Mark Bosnich a nine-month ban for failing a drug test.

The Australian was found guilty after testing positive for cocaine in 2002.

The player, 31, had claimed his drink had been spiked with the drug while out, and intends to appeal the FA decision.

An FA commission ruled after a two-day hearing that he was guilty of charges of improper conduct and breaching their doping control regulations.

BOSNICH FACTFILE
1972: Born in Sydney, January 13. During 1980s plays for Sydney Croatia
1989: Joins Man Utd for first spell, but leaves due to work permit problems
1992: Joins Aston Villa after marrying English girlfriend.
1999: Returns to Man Utd for second spell on Bosman ruling transfer. Plays just 35 games
2001: Joins Chelsea on a free transfer
2002: Charged in December with bringing game into disrepute
2003: Sacked by Chelsea; loses claim for unfair dismissal; contests Premier League decision to uphold sacking

The Australian will nevertheless not face the maximum penalty of a two-year suspension, with his nine-month ban backdated to start from 23 December 2002, when a temporary worldwide restriction was first enforced.

That means the former Aston Villa and Manchester United goalkeeper could start playing again before the end of September.

Bosnich, who has had his contract terminated by Chelsea, was not fined, but he must pay the costs of the FA commission up to a maximum of £10,000.

The Australian is already contesting a Premier League ruling that upheld Chelsea's decision to dismiss him.

Bosnich joined Chelsea in 2001 on a free transfer from Manchester United but made only seven appearances for the London club.

Chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association Gordon Taylor believes the goalkeeper could rebuild his career.

"It may well have been worse (Bosnich could have been banned for two years) and while it is damaging to his career, it does not mean to say his career is over," said Taylor.

Got off lightly in my opinion.
Also, any more news on Veron's passport scandal? I know he had a court hearing about it in December, how did it go?

he shoudln't have gotten anything.

They have sworn statements from a woman who admits spiking his drink, and he hired private investigators to film her doing it to other drinks.

He's going to appeal the decision, and with his new evidence, he should win. Then Chelsea will either have to hire him back, or pay out his remaining contract.

well it goes from bad to worse for the former australian goalkeeper. at one stage of his career he was in the spotlight for all the right reasons and now he is in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

Yeah, I agree withth XJaymz. That chick has admitted to spiking his drink, and been caught doing so to others.

He could beplaying again for the startof next season..Where though, I dont know...HE is much too good a player to be reserves.

Cheers

Cos he has also been dodgy for us during his time at United. Ah well, got himself to blame for getting into drug trouble and now his career is over.

I can't see a top club wanting him even if his ban is over-turned....he's too much of a risk whether it was his fault or not.

I rated him highly until his 2nd stint at Utd and he just did not command that presence...

He was in the unfortunate situation many big name players are: They can be the most brilliant player ever, but when it comes to being a person off the field, they can't handle the stress.

Additionally he always was a bit of an arrogant man, but then as a goalkeeper you have to be, unless you want one mistake to turn you into a sniveling pile of crap.

To be honest, the only move I think he should make(Assuming he gets the ban removed) is to a non-british club, where he doesn't start with the black mark on his rep.

Once there he can work himself back.

Then again at 31, and with the money he's been making for the last few years he could just decide to through it all in, move to Columbia, and become a dope fiend.

I remember him playing for Aston Villa against Depor at the UEFA Cup, i think it was in 1993 or 1994, he was one of the stars of a good team by then, what a waste of talent!

It was his poor presense in Goal which prompted Fergie to get Barthez and when Barthez came Bosnich could not get his place back...on top of that he was overweight.

No, Sir Alex should write a book..."How to throw someone else's career away"

Sir Alex NEVER wanted Bosnich. Bosnich was NEVER given a run at Man Utd. He was still good enough, as he showed in the matches he played for Chelsea before tearing his Ham String. He kept Cudicini out, AND he was the best Goallie in the EPL (statistically) again for that period of time.

Man Utd fans are always loyal to their team, so think anyone that the team gets rid of in such bad circumstances must be bad...But he wasnt given a fair go...Ferguson was playing van der Gouw ahead of him!!
