I have a good working modem (a bullet 56k),
It works with every other program.. Except Fifa99. I can call someone, and play, no problem. but, when I placed my modem in wait status, nobody can log in to my computer. I work with windows 98. My modem gives a carrier, when the visiting computer calls, but not ONE modem can make a connection.
Please help...

Thats a tough one (as you know). More details would be nice, but here goes:
1) Do you have any other modem to try just to "prove" it isn't a hardware problem?
2) Some Windows programs take exclusive use of some serial ports not leaving them for fifa 99. Do you have a fax program or other tsr programs?
3) You say 'it works when you call' but not when some one calls you right? You may have another program responding to that incoming call (or not).
4) Have you checked the device manager under the system icon in control panel for any conflicts before and after attempting to receive the call?
5)Perhaps your particular modem (with its particular chip set) requires a special init string other than the one being supplied by windows 98 - check with EA. This goes back to #1, try another modem even if its slower, just to see.
6) perhaps its the modem calling you that has the problem, have you tried to recieve calls from various sources?
7)Perhaps its a configuration issue - most diffuicult. Check to see if you are running the same protocols. I'm not sure what is required by EA for this, but if its modem to modem, not over the internet, you might use ppp or slip protocols. For internet its TCP/IP all the way and for network you can throw in IPX with the TCP/IP. This is too much to go into, but windows supports all of these.
I hope this helps.
Send more detail if you like

fist of all, thanks for your reply,
>> 1) Do you have any other modem to try >>just to "prove" it isn't a hardware >>problem?
No, I've tested it well, with a terminal, bbs liked program, and the modem let someone log in perfectly...
> 2) Some Windows programs take exclusive >use of some serial ports not leaving them >for fifa 99. Do you have a fax program or

Hmm i use wingate, a program that let you share more than one computer your internet connection!
>3) You say 'it works when you call' but not >when some one calls you right? You may have >another program responding to that incoming >call (or not).
Good thinking, But I didn't use a program like that, you mean like Pc Anywhere!?
4) Have you checked the device manager under >the system icon in control panel for any >conflicts before and after attempting to >receive the call?
Yes, I did. Like I sad, the modem is OK...
5)Perhaps your particular modem (with its >particular chip set) requires a special >init string other than the one being >supplied by windows 98 - check with EA. >This goes back to #1, try another modem >even if its slower, just to see.
Yes, I believe that is posible, and I will check it.. Thanks...
6) perhaps its the modem calling you that >has the problem, have you tried to recieve >calls from various sources?
Yes, I've tested with 3 other modems, same result.
7) ---cut-----
I don't think that I understand what you are trying to say.. But I know all about Networks, did you mean that the modem that calls me, should use the same network protocols ??
But Here comes an intresting HINT......
I just discoverd a thing, that helps me so solved the program, but it makes the game run to slow to play it well:
When i Didn't use FIFO BUFFERS, witch you can put on or off, by the control pannel, modem settings, than the modem workes well with FIFA soccer, but as I already tell you, it makes it to slow to play.
My windows (dutch version) says something like "16550 compatible uart needed"
Did you know what thats means??
Once again, thanks a lot for your reaction!
