DEPORTIVO PRESENT EISENMAN STADIUM (From Deportivo-La-Coruna.com)

16th May 2003 -- President Lendoiro of Deportivo presented in La Coruña on Thursday "the most beautiful of the world", according to his own words. The project, designed by famous American architect Peter Eisenman, would cost 141 million Euro to make it a reality. Lendoiro was accompanied when presenting it by Spaniard Carlos Seaone, a collaborator with Eisenman.

The new stadium, scheduled to occupy the current Riazor ground and some more, would contain place for 36.000 visitors, although this would be only 1.500 more than the actual Riazor stadium can take. Besides the stadium the ground would also include a museum of Deportivo, a hotel, restaurants, 3600 parking places, a swimming pool, a gym, a squash centre, a shopping centre etc.

"It would be the most beautiful stadium of the world because at no other place one could see a nice play on the pitch in the same view as waves rolling onto the beach," Lendoiro mentioned. He added that Deportivo are still waiting to talk about it to mayor Vázquez of La Coruña. "But I expect that at the end we can build this new Riazor stadium." Deportivo is dependent on the council, not only for the money, but also because a part of the ground to be used is still property of the city.

Architect Peter Eisenman (born in New Jersey, 1932) is considered to be among the five best architects of the world, a kind of a Pele in designing. He's situated in the theory of the deconstructivism, something which inspired him to make the Guggenheim in Bilbao.

In the 1960s Eisenman became a football supporter when he lived in Europe. At that time he lived in England and used to see the matches of Tottenham Hotspur. After building de Cidade da Cultura de Santiago, he started to see matches in Riazor and to follow Deportivo. Since then he has become a supporter and tries to combine his visits to Galicia with a match of Deportivo.

Eisenman himself also commented on the project, in a piece written at canaldeportivo.com. The architect wrote that, among others, "the stadium could serve a model for urban development. And Deportivo is among the ten best clubs of Europe, but their actual stadium isn't sufficient for their status. And it's not the size of a stadium that matters, but the design and the installations to generate income."

Will miss the old stadium but the new one will be one of the best in the world apparently! Can't argue with that!

Here are some pictures of the planned stadium:

God almighty, that's the weirdest design for a stadium I've seen, why does the roof slant away like that?

i like the new radical design but it could do with some more seating capacity.

36000 could be less if Spain host a major event in the future...or if UEFA decide to use it for a final of the CL or something.

very innovative though. I can't wait to see what it looks like when its all done :)

Amazing design, very radical like IceBlu said. But the capacity is small and the "small" side is weird. Are they going to build any stands in there?

It looks like they can expand the stadium easily if they need to.
Cool design!

It is indeed a radical and very original design. It is the final design so I don't think any stands will be added. 36000 isn't much but having a museum,a swimming pool a shooping centre etc all in it too, it certainly looks like a worth while investment for sure!:rockman:

Great desing! Very very original and amazing! The facilities are great too! Althou i don't understand why do they need that swing that comes to the sea? Or maybe that's the place where a very rich and famous people will have a drive-in! Imaging watching a CL semi-final or maybe even the final with your favourite club, right from the car! Bur they would have to bent the end a bit down. So, that people could see the field perfectly from the car! Overall this should be a great project and a great thing to look forward to for Deportivo fans, i bet. But they should definetly have more capacity because Arsenal has the same capacity and they try to build a new stadium and i thin that Deportivo would realize the same too, after some time. If the capacity would be atleast 60000, then that would definetly be the best place for CL final and maybe even the best stadium in the world!

A Coruña is several thousands shy to the 250000 inhabitants mark, you can't compare it with a big city. I wouldn't like to see a 50000 stadium half-empty.
Anyway, this is a Depor's presindet idea and the city mayor has said nothing about that yet.

It would be great to see it happen though you have to admit. And if the capacity was increased people from other citys would visit the stadium too aswell as people of Galicia.

Leindoro is adding the features for revenue. Riazor is a small compact stadium, which is often a fierce place to play(although this year it's been indifferent form)

A Coruna isn't going to attract 80,000 a game. Most games the Riazor is half empty, it's just not feasible for Depor to be making more seats with no-one sitting in them.

Here's some more info on the proposed new stadium and some more computerised pics:

It includes a sports complex, commercial and recreative center in a privileged place. An alive construction that is called to be an architectonical reference all over the world. It will have swimming pools, sports pavillions, gyms, paddle courts, squash fields... And Eisenman don't forget one of the club's dreams: The "Museo blanquiazul" (Blue and white museum). Deportivo's centenary is on 2006 and it doesn't want to forget all the history. That's why an interactive museum will show all the entity's 100 years. This project includes the building of new VIP seats, a five star hotel with 200 rooms, conference halls, restaurants,... and also offices for those who want to work near Deportivo. Thinking about families who can't watch the match at Riazor, the club will offer a place for babies and children with specialised professionals. Also green areas, local trees, and relaxation areas to watch the sea... To finish, a big public parking with 3000 places, and a profesional parking space for referees, players and authorities.

Oh, my god! You will even have a nice lawn in the stadium. Lucky Depor fans will have one of the beautifullest stadiums in the world!
