I do accept that it is not for everyone.
bjmenge 27-05-2003, 07:29:AM Who really gives a s*it about slow, er baseball??? ;)
Damn, the most boring sport ever. And to think I used to play and like watching it...
See, I used to think baseball was the most boring sport on the face of the world. I mocked people who played it and laughed and scowled at anyone who would consider watching it, although I played it until I was twelve.
But now, as a victim of the relentless soccer bashing most folk like to do (not that I care what they say though), I decided I would not pass this curse on to other sports and be a hypocrite. So I gave baseball a chance and now I enjoy it. Especially because I have money in on a fantasy baseball league and it's fun to follow your players, watch them bring in a few RBIs or blow the save--then keep them or trade them depending on the performance. In fact, I'm watching Baseball Tonight right now.
It's the great American past-time, and I now notice it and enjoy it. Just like enjoy soccer [more] as a sport that has a long and rich history around the world.
voetballiefhebb 27-05-2003, 07:59:AM How the **** you can moan about baseball. You don't have cricket. Fishing can be good at times.
Football = Riots. You won't get the OAP's staging a riot at Lords or The Oval. Infact, I doubt you could even shout abuse at the cricket players.
Whilst on the subject of other sports, why don't USA just scrap American football and play rugby so they could actually compete on the world stage. It would do them good losing all 15 layers of padding too.

Simple. MONEY. Ask yourself, what is bigger worldwide. EPL, La Liga, UEFA etc or NFL? The Super Bowl is the worlds largest watched sporting event annually (not including the World Cup because it's every 4 years). NFL even has influence in Europe. I'm pretty sure you Brits remember the London Monarchs (hehehe). Quite simple, why scrap something that is so profitable. I'm not sure about European atmospheres but to me there's nothing better than tailgaiting on a crisp, cool autumn Saturday right before your college team takes the field.
PScott 27-05-2003, 08:21:AM Some things are about money.
And the thing is, NFL is, if not the richest, one of the richest leagues for any sport in the world.

xxxFLYERxxx 27-05-2003, 08:23:AM NFL is a great league, and american football is a great sport.

Yeah. I'm going to start ripping on you for being a one-sport pussy. Sure, I can find insults for any sport, but I'm realizing every sport has its fun...although, cricket seemed pretty boring to me.
I think the whole masculine thing about American football is stupid (they're wearing pads too) and that's the only reason I could dislike it (the masculine thing is more at the high school-college level). I only like NFL football--not high school or college.
NHL - Great game.
MLB - Good times.
NBA - The game of my youth, I now realize how stupid it is.
NFL - Go Buffalo.

While I have not played football competitively, I have played it with friends, full contact. Rugby is essentially the same game, yet its players require no pads. Why then do football players need it?

If American Football was played like rugby then yeah, get rid of the pads. But its not.
I cant explain it too well, but American Football is more physical than rugby. Maybe its because of the smaller fields they play on mixed with the fact that most of the players are 250lbs to 350lbs and can still sprint 40yards in under 5 seconds. Speed+Mass equalls force. or something like that. That can get quite physical.

Showing your ignorance again. The majority of these guys grew up playing on streets no pads at all. They're tougher than any of us put together. Like Joe said earlier you're talking about playing pickup ball with friends and whatnot. Put yourself in a competitive situtation and maybe your mind will change. Probably not considering the fact you're close minded on the issue. Wow you've had concussions, torn ligaments, had knee injuries etc. COngrats, you comprise about the millions of football players out there who experiance the same hardships and still play at hard levels. To experiance the brutality you need to experiance first hand, and if you're not satisfied you can go against say Ray Lewis without pads. Daresay would any of you go up to Ray Lewis and call him a pussy? WOULD YOU?

Two. I only listed my injuries to show that I had experienced the hardships of sports to a certain degree. Doesn't make me anything special.
Three. I'd put football and rugby players in the same class. But rugby players are a step above, because they do it without pads.
I'm not being close-minded. I'm just not buying into the crap that football players are any more tough than any other athletes and that their sport is so much harder than other sports.

NFL the most watched sporting event annually in the WORLD???????? How the hell do you know that? I wonder who in the WORLD watches it? North America is not the WORLD, so you can't say that it's the most watched sporting event. NFL is the most watched in North America and it's true but give me a brake, when i was in europe i didn't even know what NFL was, until i came to Canada. The most watched sporting event is without any doubt Olympic Games, 2nd sport is The World Cup. I don't know what 3rd one is, but i give yo 100% that CL is more watched than the NFL. Don't represent the whole world with only North America.
Oh, yeah definetly EPL is the biggest worldwide and NFL is way behind the other big leagues like La Liga and Seria "A"
And about the topic, some people will say that baseball is boring. pasion1 28-05-2003, 12:36:AM Woa....whats with all the fighting guys? People shouldnt be mixing Football (soccer) with this.
Thats a battle between Rugby and American Football.
I have a thought that all sports are fighting to be dominant...but some arnt.
Ie:
Basketball: Is a cool sport because the NBA doesnt care if they're not "ruling" the world. They just play and have fun.
Baseball: Some people are desperatly trying to save this dying sport (bush)....which has just been kicked out of the Olympics. The states are pissed for that. I have not many opinions on this sport so ill leave it.
American Football- very cool, but pretends to be bigger than it is when they rave about how people "all over the earth" went nuts to see the Super Bowl's big fire works display and halftime show ( but, seriously)
Just cause Jay Leno said something on how many people watch this 1 game of the year, its by far NOT the greatest viewed anual event.
The Champion's league is going to pretty much double or triple that tomorow.
(Even Copa Libertadores has a huge viewing compared)
Rugby: Gotta Love this. Its great. Just pissed that American Football is catching up.
Hockey: Tries too hard to be the biggest, thats why many fans of other sports hates it a bit (Like the nerd who walks in saying hes going to kick everyone's ass)
Its pretty cool and interesting too.
Football (soccer)- Cant explain this much. But theres a feeling of not caring about other sports, since it sort of knows its the best. As a fanatic, I dont start to sweat when I hear that NBA games beat out the NHL ones (if i was that fan).
All sports are cool guys.
Lets just chill out for a bit and enjoy the massive spectacle we have tomorow. Hope Juve wins...:rockman:

LilPlayaJosh 28-05-2003, 02:46:AM I dont know whats the most watched event but i know for a 30 second commercial during the super bowl it costs 1.8-2.3 million dollars. Now would commercials be that expensive if nobody watched it? And i bet you that CL doesnt have the kind of pay that the Super Bowl does. And the World Cup I think is the biggest event but its not annually so...
Gerrard 17 28-05-2003, 02:47:AM The thing I can't find in any of the American sports... is the atmosphere on the stadiums. It's all in good fun, people go there with their families, buy hot dogs and laugh.
Football in Europe is nothing like that... rivalry between the fans in the stands, everyone singing their hearts out. When something goes wrong, we are like OH ****ING ****, and start cussing out players from the other team.
That's why football in Europe is so fascinating, every game is a battle on the pitch as well as in the crowd :mrpimp:
Your arguments about American Football being a pussy sport are weak. Football players wear shinpads, does that make them pussies? It's to avoid injuries. The shoulder pads and helmets are to avoid serious injuries and broken bones, they don't protect you from getting bruises.
LilPlayaJosh 28-05-2003, 02:55:AM I see your just saying what you have heard. Try going to the blackhole in Oakland with a visiting teams jersey on. One year someone wore a San Diego jersey and got stabbed. Or at the Doggpound in Cleveland. There's alot more im just not gonna type that much. It may not be as big as European Soccer but it's there. I think of Soccer crowds as like our College football where there is alot of passion, the tearing down of goal posts after a big upset win, etc...
Gerrard 17 28-05-2003, 03:01:AM Errr... I live here :|
I see no passion whatsoever during the games in the crowd. I've been to 3 American Football games (Ravens and college),and a Baseball game (Orioles)... it's just parents with their 8 year old kids with baseball caps thinking they are cool, and fat people with mullets stuffing themselves with peanuts and hot dogs (H)
And stabbing each other isn't exactly great atmosphere either. It's singing your heart out and waving your scarf hopelessly in the snow, when your team is down by 3 goals and nothing can stop them from being relegated. But yet, you go to the stadium every Saturday, and for 100 minutes everyone sitting around you becomes a brother supporting a common cause.
LilPlayaJosh 28-05-2003, 03:02:AM Oh yeah and I promise you Rugby players wouldnt last in the NFL one hit From 250 pounds of solid rock and see if you get up. I watch rugby on foxsportsworld sometimes and they do'nt hit nearly as hard and arent as big or strong. The big guys in Rugby are just big there not muscular at all and i bet they dont run a 4.3 forty either. Plus they throw the ball to a teammate instead of taking a hit head up in the NfL you dont just lateral it back you take the hit.
Gerrard 17 28-05-2003, 03:07:AM Yeah, and I don't think the players literally go head to head with the other team during every play... without the helmets they would die from brain tumors and ****.
But I don't really watch rugby, so I'm not sure...
another pointless sport is AFL :wootman:

You made my point exactly about the people that talked about them wearing pads made them wussy's, htey hit harder they need pads. And I want to go to an Arsenal game someday so hopefully I will see what ur sayin about the crowds and judge for myself.
Gerrard 17 28-05-2003, 03:26:AM It's amazing man... And you don't have to see Arsenal to catch the great atmosphere.... Just look at the WBA supporters this season. I'll hopefully get some of that when I go to Poland this summer, but I'm not sure when the season starts.
Violence on the stadiums is a problem though. Some idiots take it too far, and demolish their own stadiums :( The hools start to burn the seats or throw them at the away fans. Now it's more common that they set up their fights like an hour before the game in a park or a field or whatever, and then basically kick the **** out of each other with baseball bats, chains, axes :|, knives and ****.

The guy isn't a liar, he's just incredibly ignorant. You have no idea how soccer-ignorant American sports writers are. You can see it on TV shows like Around the Horn (ESPN) as well. Every time (and it's not very often) that something about soccer comes up, they try to hide their ignorance by making demeaning comments towards the game and regard it as non-existant in the USA, which is far from true.

Absolutely not true. There is no statement I've heard in recent memory which is farther from the truth. But I guess it was an enquiry rather than a statement... so no. No that is not true at all. :)
bjmenge 28-05-2003, 06:24:AM Hard as it is...I am going to admit that my comments about American football players being whimps for wearing pads were wrong. I don't really know why I said them, but I agree their sport is tough, in it's own right. I think it came in anger from soccer getting little respect from American media outlets, and decided to take it out on football.
As for ridiculously anti-soccer American sportswriters, look up Jim Rome. Idiot.

Exactly... that's what I keep saying. The only reason I speak bad of American sports is as a reaction to the treatment soccer gets from the media (and from some average Americans as well). If they can respect soccer, then I will respect American football.
Baseball's a helluva boring game though. :p ;)

That's how I've been feeling for a long time. Finally took some anger out last night about it. You knock my sport, I knock yours twice as hard.
PScott 28-05-2003, 06:38:AM That 3 million figure looks a lot more real now that ive seen this.

It says that Manchester United against Deportivo only got 2.4 million viewers from Britain. The Newcastle vs. Barcelona game only 660,000 people watched that game. That made me wonder why more people would watch the final if none of their countries teams are in it then when they were in it?
I realize that it is the final after all so those numbers would undoubtedly go up, but how much.
Another factor is that the Champions League final is shown in all of Europe. But other than the two countries teams, where is all the interest coming from. Its like the World Cup final. When your country is playing the whole country is watching. Then when they are knocked out, only the hardcore soccer fans will watch the other games. Would it not be the same for Champions League matches also?
Maybe someone knows. I dont know.:)

No man, it's not at all like that. Even some people who are not soccer fans at all will still watch the World Cup final, even if their team is not in it. It's the one game people who don't care that much about the game WILL watch. Not to mention those who follow soccer, of whom there are hundreds of millions.
LilPlayaJosh 28-05-2003, 07:24:AM Hey i was wondering what other world soccer channels there are to get here in the U.S. I already have FoxSportsWorld.
bjmenge 28-05-2003, 07:43:AM Not sure there are any other English-language ones. Univision and Telemundo are Spanish-language and show some soccer from Mexico/S. America.
LilPlayaJosh 28-05-2003, 07:55:AM Well you think that there are channels from UK that we can get on satelite?
voetballiefhebb 28-05-2003, 08:29:AM Originally posted by Run DMB
Oh that's classic. That's the most ignorant statement I've ever read. 132 million people watched the Super Bowl. And you're telling me the Champions League final isn't watched by more than 132 million people worldwide. Come on...
I've seen figures from 650 million to 1 billion people who watched the Eurovision song contest. Not sure if it was T.V sets or people. Have to check up on it.
Jemini who scored 0 points, the worst UK effort ever considering we are one of the most successful, but Eurovision is always ****. Rejected musicians 3 minutes 30 seconds of fame. Jemini said that it was down to the war with Iraq, Post-war backlash from Europe. I'm sure the UK are very shaken by that, scoring 0 points in the worst music comp which is as **** as Popstars, Pop Idol, American idol and Fame Academy.

That is definetly worng. CL is shown not only in europe but in Asia, Africa, South America and North America plus Australia. So it is shown in every country that has atleast 2 different sports channels. And that will be way more than 3 million. While the Super Bowl is not even shown in half atleast of europe, i don't know about the other half(England,Spain,Italy etc.). So 3 million for CL? I think people watch it not just to support but for excitment too. They should have had a survey in Asia, i wonder how many millions would they get there? And the United-Deportivo game was a QF, so there was another game with Barca i think going on and many people wathed it too. People that are not soccer fans don't watch World Cup is not true also. As i know lots of people who don't even know how to kick the ball but still watch the final. Same with CL final. Just watch and i am telling you, that you will get atleast over 150 million spectators.

Not really sure. You might be able to get Sky or ITV, but I doubt it and it would be expensive.
