Here's a review of ESPN MLS GameNight at PSX IGN, by Chris Carle - the genius who gave ISS Pro Evolution (basically the same game) a 5.1 - remember he slammed the game for lack of a license (guess he couldn't figure out which team Manchester was, and who #7 Bekhem was..)

Well I guess he recieved a lot of stick from fans about not knowing his football, so he counters in his review;

"I still play today. If you fly to San Francisco, I'll be more than happy to take you on in a game of footy, either outdoors or on the living room couch, twisted-cord style. My love for the sport makes me impassioned about the video games related to it. ISS fell short of my expectations, and I slammed it."

*cough* take me on in a game of 'footy' - does he think it's basketball? does he want to play football one on one? will he dunk on me?

Anyways, this made me laugh too about ISS;

"I stand by the fact that the lack of license made Pro Evolution weak, and that the commentary and repeat play (in the face of another title on the way) left something to be desired."

Other classics;
" On offense, players make appropriate runs and crash the posts when you expect them to."

- 'crash the posts'...so now football is ice hockey.

"While in PE defenders and goaltenders were easy to smoke"

- liar, I can see his nose growing from here.

I could go on, but just go to IGN and read the review. This guy is the stereotypical north american SACCER fan (to coin a phrase from Shearer), I think they're a dying species. $100 says he gives Fifa 9.5+..

People like that guy piss me off when I meet them. They talk like they know everything about the game but in doing so make it clear that they know nothing. A "saccer" fan indeed.

By the way, I've got nothing against the word "footy," but NO American has ever used that word in talking about soccer. Football, perhaps. But never, ever footy. To say that in a conversation over here would just sound funny.

Ah, to be living in a country without four sports more popular...

I need an answer.

How do I buy ISS? I tried the emulator version and liked the game.

I have a PC and will buy a PSX if necessary. Please don't tell me I have to spend $400 on a ticket back to the UK JUST to buy a computer game!! http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/wink.gif

I need a website. Which version is out now and when is the next version coming out?

Thanks.

Shearer mate, I'm so glad yet another member of this forum has seen the light I could kiss you like an Argentine Midfielder...oh wait...that's another post. http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/wink.gif

I got ISS Pro Evolution from EBWORLD.COM - they devilvered it to me in a matter of days and I haven't stopped playing it...ok, I do stop - to play CM99/00. http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/smile.gif

Everyone who uses the emulator says the graphics aren't that good, but on a TV with my PSX the game looks f***ing boss! If u want to buy a PSX that's up to you, the most important thing is the gameplay which is out of this world. It's also the best 4 player game I've ever played - and the reason I bought a PSX multitap!

U ever considered buying a PS2?

SHEARER..what exactly did u play and w/ what emu?
yeah...if u wanna buy something then buy the ps2..cause it will run "most" of the psx games..and ps2 games as well..

ANYONE seen the preview posted at this site..

i think that konami are trying to use KCEO BRANCH TO MAKE A GAME..THAT'S MORE ARCADE LIKE FIFA..and I HOPE maintain the evolution style with evolution2 and winning eleven..to EAT UP THE WHOLE MARKET http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/smile.gif

Oh man this was simply horrible, and one could easily tell from the beginning. This guy is a horrible journalist, and he ruined his report from the beginning:

[Lacking a license and without the slick gameplay of EA's FIFA offerings (or ISS games on other platforms), the game was an enigma]

FIFA's "slick" gameplay ? HAHAHAHAH Wait...you're kidding right ? No ? HAHAHAHA
This guy obviously cannot match up with the difficulty of a REAL football simulation and has to resort to praising Kindergarten soccer games like FIFA.

[In Pro Evolution, player names were fudged to approximate their international counterparts. This is what happens when you don't have the rights to such things]

Does it really matter when the game has the rights and the gameplay simply BLOWS ? FIFA has graphics and names, nothing more. It is so incredibly easy and annoying to the point that it aggravates me. Besides, when I play ISS I make up my own players anyway. I have three teams of imaginary, yet awesome players that were only available through features in ISS, instead of "player editing" in FIFA, where you have to modify an existing player.

[I have been playing the game all of my life: in youth leagues, high school and through college, both outdoor and indoor.]

That explains why he likes FIFA and its pinball style of play ! He plays indoor ! Enclosed spaces, ball bouncing off walls, ball being kicked back and forth... Yuck, I can't stand indoor soccer.

[Changing players is still a point of controversy. Unless you are diligent about switching your players, the computer will do it for you, and often at the worst time. This can be quite unnerving on defense when you're trying to switch from a closer player to the defender who has a better angle on the ball. The computer's player selection is uneven, and may leave you in an awkward situation]

This shows that he is an incompetent gamer, as he doesn't explore the possibilities and options that the game offers. YOU CAN SWITCH in the options to MANUAL PLAYER CHANGES. It's really not that hard to make changes in the game if you look around !

[Instead of an arrow (which is standard in all other soccer sims out there) to show where the ball is headed, Gamenight only permits you to point in a specific direction and let the chips fall where they may. Without some kind of meter or arrow, the best you can do is put the ball in a general direction. While this cuts down on an opponent knowing what you're going to do, it hinders you more than it helps]

That is what pisses me off about FIFA games...they have an arrow and you can only place it EXACTLY where you pointed, without being able to curve and actually trick the goalkeeper and wall in order to score. I think that ISS is smart, because you don't have a meter for that and you can place it, and make necessary changes after releasing the shot.

[Lasting Appeal
Of ISS Pro Evolution and Gamenight, this is the superior game. The question you need to ask yourself: Will I still play this when FIFA comes out at the end of the month?]

Will I even buy FIFA when it comes out at the end of the month ? Is my money worth anything for those bastards at EA that don't listen to their customers and continue producing palette games with minor changes ?

My questions to end this "review of a review" are how much d*ck did this guy have to blow to get a position as a reviewer at IGN ? Do they pay him or does he voluntarily toss salad to remain there ?

IGN has to improve the quality of their reporters and reviewers, because this is simply rubbish. These reviews affect marketing rates and ISS is fortunate to have such a large audience of supporters that know better than to listen to them, yet there are few people that will ignore ISS because of the negative comments this guy posts on the internet. Simply rubbish, and nothing more.

You see Teknos, in North America no one really cares about Soccer - almost 90% of the reviewing sites just think videogame soccer is EA's Fifa and that's it.

"Oh it's a Fifa game - must be good, let's slap a 90% on it"

You should read this guy's ORIGINAL ISS PRO EVOLUTION review - it's hilarious.

The worst thing is that EA, and I can't blame them, must cater to these people. Wait till you see the Fifa 2001 opening sequence, it looks good, but there are ELEVEN bad fouls and NO GOALS shown. It's almost like watching an intro to NHL 2001, you just see hit after hit after hit. Football isn't about tough tackles, it isn't about licences or pop stars making cool soundtracks - it's about passing, and movement, and goals and everything else that makes the beautiful game what it is - and that's everything ISS has and Fifa doesn't. It's a shame because the Fifa online community is so awesome, yet they play an inferior game.

I haven't yet tried out Fifa 2001 PC, and I hope it's different - it has a power bar for shooting, but ISS is so much more than that, so I'll wait and see.

Might I pose a question?

Is anyone else as annoyed with the FIFA-game catchphrase "bone-crunching tackles" as I am? I can't say I've ever been witness to a tackle which was malevolent enough to crunch bones, let alone be included as a feature in a video game.

i agree dsh...
a new game with the name of hooligans was a talking point but im sure will have less influence on fair play and clean football than the BONE CRUNCHING tackle featured in FIFA2001!
