View Full Version : David Bellion Join man Utd on 1st july 2003
Chucky907 01-07-2003, 09:31:PM Manchester United have completed the signing of French striker David Bellion - and hope to have Ronaldinho within the next 24 hours.
The 20-year-old former Sunderland player has signed a four-year deal at Old Trafford after his contract with the Wearsiders expired yesterday.
And United chief Peter Kenyon will be in Paris on Wednesday intending to spend more of the 25 million gained from the sale of David Beckham.
Bellion said: "I am really excited to be joining Manchester United. When you are young they are one of the clubs you dream of playing for.
"I am ready to work hard and give 100% to United, and I'm already focused on the new season ahead."
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, said: "It has been a long process to complete this deal. We did not know whether David would go abroad or come to us, and we are delighted he has chosen Manchester United.
"He is a young player with great potential who will fit into the club's future plans very well."
Ronaldinho, United's No 1 summer target, has agreed terms with the club and is waiting to find out if current club PSG will not price him out of a move.
The Ligue 1 side are reported to be asking 31million, but are likely to accept a bid in excess of 12million as they need cash to sign Bordeaux striker Pauleta.
Bellion comes to United highly recommended by current Old Trafford reserve team boss Ricky Sbragia, who worked with the player at Sunderland, even though he only made five starts for the Wearsiders last term.
playmate 01-07-2003, 09:50:PM it's difficult to see bellion breaking into the first team just now. he's got pace. hopefully he'll develop into something like a Henry.:p
at least that's one more addition to the squad as of now!
now we should turn our eyes to ronaldinho and get him under 15 million. as the report says PSG need money and want to sign Pauleta. So they might accept a 12-15 million bid in the end.:mrpimp:
Help? 01-07-2003, 11:29:PM Yeah! :rockman: :rockman: :rockman: . The singings have started! Bellion, hopefully Ronaldinho tommorow and Tim Howard should be with us in a couple of days:p .
ZamundaMan 01-07-2003, 11:42:PM I hope bellion can pull of a Henry but it's hard to tell, i've never seen him play.
ZamundaMan 01-07-2003, 11:50:PM actually i'm sceptical if he didn't get a starting place at sunderland what makes him man u material?
man united forever 02-07-2003, 02:25:AM He has raw pace and shows a willingness to take on defenders. ****ty finisher at the moment, though. I think his spell on the sidelines had more to do with his manager than his playing talent.
And it looks like the Ronaldinho deal has gone up in smoke:(.
Let's hope Kenyon can do some hard bargaining and "Squeeze the PSG lemon until the pips squeak.":D
mufc_daddy 02-07-2003, 02:54:AM Please let their be more quality signings!!!!! Ronaldinho, Kluivert and a defender please!!!!!
Any news on what squad number Bellion will get?????
shokz 02-07-2003, 02:56:AM Between 20 - 30 is my prediction.
ZamundaMan 02-07-2003, 03:03:AM Is the squad number REALLY that important?
As for ronaldinho why spend 20-30 when u can spend 10 on Damien Duff who we know will be able to do his job in the attack left/centre (same as ronald).

Exatcly, we should go for Duff.
If we got Ronaldinho, and paid £30+ for him we'd possibly have not enough money for a left-back Fergie wanted, or a right-winger(Ricardo Quaresma?).
mufc_daddy 02-07-2003, 03:14:AM The Kewell stories seemed to have taken over the Duff gossip. I think its because Blackburn priced him at around 17 million. We really should buy him but not for that much.
Caponedawg 02-07-2003, 03:15:AM Tim Howard is having problems getting a work permit.

Where did you hear that? He has a hungarian passport, so he should be fine.

Well he's gonna need a work permit otherwise he wont be eligible to play for us, thus we will have to loan him back to MetroStars for a year.:(
(If you dont know what im on about, I dont blame you, Its very confusing that signing a player without a work permit and having to loan him back to an american club).

Not exactly.
He has only recently applied for his hungarian passport and so must wait for that to be done before he can be cleared for a wrok permit.
As for Bellion, well he definitely needs time to develope but his first team experience with Sunderland might have helped accelerate that slightly.
Disappointing to hear the news bout Ronaldinho, maybe now we can go for Nakata(H).
rumanu? 02-07-2003, 04:49:AM let's hope bellion doesn't start the way diego did and become a laughing stock.
shokz 02-07-2003, 07:08:AM But unlike Forlan, Bellion was a free...;)
Jedi Mind Trick 02-07-2003, 07:33:AM forlan wasn't that bad this past season, was he? he's had his moments and some game winners. as for bellion, looks like ferguson's looking for that "potential" and not wanting to miss out on the "next henry" (don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to compare bellion to henry or anything).
oh...and as for nakata, i don't think he'd be a good fit at united...maybe it's just me.

He scored some important goals last season, so why dont you just stfu

If Nakata does join us, then we will have a proper replacement for Beckham in terms of T-shirt selling in the Asia market . . . :D
mufc_daddy 02-07-2003, 10:53:AM Yeh thats what i was gonna say too. I still believe we will get Ronaldinho because he wants to move so in the end PSG will have to sell him.
mhflierman 02-07-2003, 11:01:AM Good signing.. really future material. Unlike many other ManUtd fans on these boards I won't mind if we leave Ronaldinho in Paris. I have my doubts about his profesionalism. We should spend that money on an established striker, and if there's money left a defender.

yes i know he's scored some brill goals this season (eg: southampton, chelsea) but when he started out he was terrible.
he got that penalty vs heifa and that started his goal rush
Fernandez 02-07-2003, 11:28:AM maybe his header against aston villa then it started....any ways...
nakata is an option because he is japanese and would be ideal replacement for beckham.... PSG are possibly the dumbest club.... they are in financial difficulty....they should just sell ronaldinho for 11 million euros... if that 31 million euro price tag is still on... i doubt any club will buy him and he may leave on a free transfer...
if he doesnt come... david bellion who might be wearing 17 can play on the right... same too for solskjaer.... man utd should not sell their flexible players like p.neville,o'shea, brown, silvestre and solskjaer..... these five should not be sold....

Even if he has a Hungarian passport, he will not be allowed to play in England as an EU player until 2004. This is because the ruling allowing EU affiliate members to be considered as part of the EU only takes effect a year after he application.

their price tag is 31 million pounds = 45 million euros. man utd has been making bids of 11 - 15 million pounds.
if PSG are smart they should take it. it's unlikely they won't accept. i think they are just bargaining. but their starting price is laughable!

Who the hell are you? Glory!Glory!Glory!Glory!.
You've hardly watched him play because you've never watched The Premiership highlights.
He has potential to become a great player in the Premier League.
You annoy me.
DeadManInc2709 02-07-2003, 02:28:PM He has the potential. He could be a great player in the future. Good signing in my opinion and he comes on a free transfer. Good deal.

Lol and PSG said that since they haven't received any offers from United, they don't even need money, they have enough for the club and to keep Ronnie in Paris! lol. As for RUUD!RUUD!RUUD!RUUD! Maybe you should start watching football a little bit more and not just say that who the hell is Bellion. Who the hell was Silvestre when he was 20? Who the hell was Henry when he was 20? And who the hell was O'Shea when he was 20? Not a very big name, well who are they now? Yes, they are stars! And that's what Ferguson thinks about, future.
Silverhawk 02-07-2003, 07:28:PM Isn't Bellion the ame teenager ManU and Arsenal were after last season/couple of seasons back and Sunderland said they shouldn't pressurise the young player and that he would not be sold??

He probably still doesn't know who Silvestre and O'Shea are :D:p
RUUD!RUUD!RUUD!RUUD! while it's important to buy class players to improve the team, you don't have to buy proven talent. Investing in the future saves the club a lot of money(look at our youth team of 92) and let's face it - football is becoming a ruthless business venture for most chairmen. Bellion is a very promising prospect and could be a class player for years to come.
Jedi Mind Trick 03-07-2003, 01:41:AM like i said, i think saf is in it for the potential. bellion's been touted as the next henry...especially with his pace. he's very young right now...i'm sure he's a project for the future. if he works out, it's a brilliant stroke for saf and united. if not, it's not like they had to give up much to sign him anyways.
man united forever 03-07-2003, 02:22:AM It will probably be at least 2 or 3 years before we see Bellion start to realise his potential. Let's hope he doesn't have to be thrust into the spotlight too early if we are in a situation where we lose forwards/wingers due to injury.
I`ve seen the kid playin`. And this is what I can see from him : very, very right footed, explosives dribbler not like Henry who dribbles the ball smooth and crisp, he dribbles sort of Trevor Sinclair style ( knocks it forward and chase it ). Crossing ain`t bad, but sometimes too much power in it.
