VALENCIA IMPROVE BID FOR MAKAAY
2nd July 2003 -- On Saturday president Lendoiro of Deportivo made clear that this club have received three offers for Roy Makaay so far. The past days it became evident that the most important one of them has come from Valencia, as the club of president Jaime Ortí have offered 15 million Euro + ‘Kily” González in exchange for the Dutch striker.
Already last summer Valencia wanted to sign Makaay, but the striker stayed at Deportivo and became European topscorer this season. But the option to play at Valencia is a realistic one again, as currently the club are negotiating with Barcelona about Argentinean players Ayala and Aimar. In this way they could make cash available to sign Makaay, and he could be the star filling up the place of Aimar.
But ‘Kily” González could be an obstacle in the negotiations, as he doesn’t want to be used as exchange money. His agent, Marcelo Lombilla, has been in Spain since Monday and assured Spanish sportspaper Marca that he doesn’t know anything about a supposed interest of Deportivo. “And Kily likes to stay at Valencia and on 4 August he will be present when the new season starts. Their won’t be any initiative from him to move one”. That’s not surprising as ‘Kily” González seems to earn an amazing salary at Valencia (about 6 million Euro), something he never will achieve at Deportivo.
Another club which could join the hunt for Makaay is Manchester United. British newspaper “The Guardian” has written down that their coach Ferguson is looking at several players to strengthen his squad, among which Makaay (Deportivo), Ronaldinho (Paris-Saint Germanin) and Djemba-Djemba (Nantes).
In England they assume that Makaay could be sold for a price of 21 million Euro. Until now Valencia, as mentioned, have made the best bid as German champions Bayern Munich have offered 15 million Euro but without including a player. The third team interested is still unknown as Barcelona haven’t officially approached Deportivo yet. But Lendoiro has made clear that whatever club is interested, they should pay for a crack as Makaay is: at least 24 million Euro.
