Gold Cup competition began today with the U.S beating Haiti 3-0 in what was a truly boring match.

In the second game of the Gold Cup opening double header Colombia edged Jamaica 1-0.Not a very good game.

Group D will be seeing action tommorow as Canada will be facing Costa Rica.

Canada and CostaRica tied 2-2 in what was the second day of Gold Cup compeition.

i heard a while back that mexico were trying to move the CONMEBOL to get better competition and therefore improve their play. do you think this would help the US aswell(if they were to do the same)?

I don't think that was the story, to my understanding it was the South American fed. that floated the idea of combining the two federations. I don't think it will happen, for many reasons.

to Ginolaahh: Mexico wanted to become part of the South American Football Confederation (CSF) because of their higher level of competition in WC qualifying and Cup play (Libertadores). Mexico belongs to the Confederation of North,Central America and the Carabbean wich denied them any type of confederation exchange where Mexico would replace Venezuela in CSF and Venezuela wich has never classified to a WC would replace Mexico in Concacaf.Mexico however has become a permanent invitee to the Copa America (CSF Tournament) and Mexican Clubs play elimination matches against Venezuelan teams for Venezuelas two team spots in the Copa Libertadores... PolishPower: I did hear of a possible merger between Concacaf and CSF but the problem was that the only teams that would benefit from this would be the Concacaf teams and it would also cost CSF teams a lot of money.

As far as I know the main obstacle is that Mexico and USA know a good thing when they see it- concacaf (or whatever it's now called) full of mediocre teams, meaning their participation in the World Cups is almost a given.

I don't think USA especially is keen on having to play very tough matches with teams from S. America for those spots if fusion of the two came about.

Jamaica was eliminated today from the Gold Cup as it lost it's second game to an improvised Honduras team 2-0.

Puru in a disapointing match tied with Haiti 1-1.This result automatically qualifys the U.S for round two of Gold Cup competition.

VariousStyles is right, calling Canada the surprise team is way too premature. They were somewhat lucky to get a tie against an impressive Costa Rican team, and they played absolutly terrible against South Korea. That game was incredibly borring, Canada didn't have a single chance to score.

Personally, I agree that Mexico will probably win the Gold Cup. I think the USA will give a strong showing for themselves, but even if they make it past Colombia, which I think will be hard given the history, beating Mexico in LA will be unlikely... but not impossible.
Most USA-Mexico matches over the past 5 years have been very exciting, close matches. I hope to see another one in the Final.

As for your education and tax dollars, check up the secondary education given in Mexico compared with that of the US, and see which one you would rather be paying for.

That may be true, but I believe that you're talking about the U.S. Cup. This thread is about the Gold Cup (Copa de Oro), which is not 'our' cup... it belongs to the Football Confederation (formerly CONCACAF) to determine the Confederation's champion (although Peru and South Korea were invited into it as well this year).

It's true that most of the World Cup '98 US team and staff kind of had that attitude... but what most people here seem not to notice is that the entire staff (coaches, trainers, etc.) and almost the entire roster is completely different now.

What I appreciate about new coach Bruce Arena is his ability to admit that he needs to look deeper into the talent pool in the US than Steve Sampson did (who basically took almost all the same players to the World Cup that had played with him for years). And so far this current squad hasn't really displayed that much of an attitude (at least not NEARLY as much as that World Cup '98 US squad did)!

But more should definitely be done to find the talent in this country, though.

Only 2 clubs have won impressively, USA and Mexico. I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I really do think that the US will meet Mexico in LA for the finals.
They have won there games even though they haven't looked as good as most fans would hope they would.
Heck, if they've been winning this way, can you imagine how they would look when they start getting it together? The World Cup is 2 years away, plenty of time to improve.

Canada would have made some noise had they placed Alex Bunbary on the squad and not suspended Tomas Radzinski and Brad Parker. I don`t think they are out yet. I also agree that Mexico will win the Gold Cup. The US could very well lose to Columbia (in which there would be no shame, since Columbia is a strong team), but if the US plays Mexico in LA then it will be a road game for the US http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/frown.gif (I loved how the US moved the US-Mexico '98 World Cup Qualifier in 1997 to Foxboro, Massachussettes... at least the U.S. was able to have a home game against Mexico for once http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/wink.gif - and as I recall, both qualifiers played against each other that year ended in a draw).

Yes! As a matter of fact, the last two or three meetings them both resulted in Mexico beating the US 1-0 IN INJURY TIME... and those were competitions, NOT friendlies. If Mr. TeKmoS goes to a public school, then my tax dollars are helping pay for his education.

There's no debate here. It's the way it works! Public schools are paid for mainly with public money... in other words, tax dollars. This has nothing to do with nationality or race.
The fact is I work and I pay my taxes every year. I do not cheat on them nor do I ever plan to.

From Tekmos' own statements, he said he is in "AP classes."
You don't have AP classes in college. He is in high school.

But it wasn't the main point anyway... the main point was RESPECT... and so far he has shown it to no one.
