Someone else can confirm, but you can only get rid of a player either by outright releasing them before their contract expires (and paying a penalty) or waiting for another club to make you an offer.

If you can afford the salary, consider keeping the bastard you're trying to get rid of on the bench and hope to get an offer. It's happened to me -- made a small bundle on a player I was about to release anyway. If he's **** and it's unlikely anyone will want him, just cut your loses.
