I'm English and we're the last to compliment German football, although the rivalry is in good humour, and I have to say that, out of that list, it obviously has to be Kahn.

Kahn is one of three goalkeepers in that poll that would be in my shortlist to be the best in the world, the others being Given and Friedel. I would not even consider the rest. No doubt, the others are brilliant shot stoppers, but I wouldn't feel safe in defence with any of the others in goal simply because all they can do is parry away shots.

Kahn, Given and Friedel all command their box and make the area their own. If any ball is rolling into the area, they will not think twice about coming to get the ball. They will come out an claim it, thus averting any danger that would come as a result of the keeper being too hesistant and letting someone in on goal, forcing the keeper to try and save a shot.

Any cross that comes in and is in reach of them, they will come out and catch the ball. They will not run out and pat or punch it away into more danger. Any ball that is punchable is catchable, and catching the ball is far safer. Through catching it, the attack will be over and the defence will get a chance to clear their lines. If the keeper just punches it away, the danger is still on and the keeper may be forced to make a safe.

I do rant on about this safe, less flamboyant style of goalkeeping, but it works. Though Buffon and Casillas may look a lot more exciting while playing, a lot of the great saves they are making would not even have to be made by someone like Oliver Kahn. He would have safely cleared up the danger before the shot had even happened, and that is why I believe he is the best in the world.

The best keepers in the world are never the ones that just flap shots away, such as someone like Jerzy Dudek, the best are the ones that have such prescence that they stop the danger before it even happens. Think Peter Schmiechel, think Gordon Banks, think Lev Yashin. And next in line to be best in the world will be Chris Kirkland, mark my words.

Well i chose Kahn. Friedel is great too.

Carlo Cudicini is worth a mention too. He was instrumental in Chelsea's drive for CL qualification.

cudicini had a terrific season. crazy thing is, he's like a fourth choice goal keeper for italy. if he was english, he'd have that job easily.

I voted Buffon, but I wouldnt mind having either Kahn or him...

Kahn is a much more commanding pressence IMO, but when it comes to pure goalkeeping, I gave it to Buffon...just....

I think Buffon is slightly more agile than Kahn.

Cudicini, Toldo, Freidel, and Casillas deserve a mention.

Buffon gets my vote.

Kahn is more commanding around his area but then he is about 10yrs older than Buffon. I'd feel the tiniest bit safer with Buffon were in goal if I was a defender though.

i would say buffon also....

"who are you to say that?"

Well, would you prefer to be the defence infront of a keeper who just parrys away shots whenever they come at him and punches away crosses, not stopping the attack, or a keeper who commands the area and stops any situations before they even happen through safe goalkeeping?

I fully agree with you that a goalkeeper that catches the ball is a lot safer than someone who punches it away but Buffon is not a puncher.

gbfootball
13-08-2003, 01:23:PM
Sorry for making the assumption then! He's in the minority really, as most of the keepers from Spain, Italy, Portugal, South America etc. are usually ones that flap at the ball. The safe ones always come from Britain, Germany, Holland and USA.

Next few seasons the best goalkeeper will be Chris Kirkland. Just wait and see. :mrpimp:

I reckon when he retires he should have 75+ appearances for England, and should take the Liverpool no1 jersey from the big-nosed pole.
