View Full Version : AFL vs Soccer/Football.
Torsten Frings 29-08-2003, 05:33:PM I assume that every Australian here prefers soccer over Aussie Rules, I just wanted to ask: why? Do you also enjoy the AFL? Do you have to put up with other family members...mocking?...you about your soccer obsession? Also, do you think SBS's coverage is good? If you don't think it's enough, remember: Fox Sports, on Optus and Foxtel, has plenty more. And ESPN has plenty of CL. And finally, why is soccer/football better than the AFL? Give some examples if you can, and sorry if this is a stupid thread, you can delete it if you want.
Jono82 29-08-2003, 05:51:PM My family doesn't mock me any more... just my extended one does!
I think SBS could show more... That's why I want Foxtel... but I know I'm up against a brick wall with my parents on the issue.
And Ch 10's Sport Report could not only show AFL TRAINING! and PRE-SEASON Training in their news report... I mean... seriously... who gives a flying F*ck about Pre-season training in NOVEMBER!!! -
EDIT: especially when it's the lead story in the Sports section and the season doesn't start until March!
The TOTAL coverage of soccer on the 5 o'clock news on channel 10... ONE Man United Goal and the scores of all the other games displayed for 2 seconds at the very END of the Sport section... even the Hockey (the Field version) gets ahead of it!
I follow AFL and Soccer/Football just as much as each other.
I play AFL for a side, and Indoor Football at night.
valioso 30-08-2003, 02:09:AM afl is cool even if I dont understand most of it... but they are focking crazy..:rockman:

I really dont like AFL...It is the WORST TV sport in the world..It isnt bad to watch live, or play, but watching it on TV is boring.
Im from north of the border tho, so a better question for me would be Rugby League or Soccer...and I definitely follow both, but the rest of my family has no idea about soccer...Im always getting into arguments with people about why its a good game...Not hard to win those arguments tho, "World Game", "Most Played Worldwide", "Most Supported Worldwide" etc etc ;)

hmm you seem confused...Rugby isnt AFL
AFL is the game 'Aussie Rules Football' (AFL is the major league for it: The Australian Football League)...
It isnt played an awful lot in the north eastern states, its mainly played throughout Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia.
NSW and Qld are more known for Rugby (mainly League, Union is slightly more Australia wide, and doesnt have a major nationwide club competition)
djperthglory 30-08-2003, 10:16:AM umm guys shouldnt this be discussed in soccer gaming oceanias forums???
rumanu? 30-08-2003, 11:05:AM before i left aussie shores, i only knew of aussie rules.
then i found the best sport in the world football(H)
soccer will always be better. i will even admit i love man utd as much as collingwood, even if i've been supporting the pies for 5 years longer.
nsl is of good standard, but people here are ignorant of how good the league is.
i dont care if south melbourne are greek, will always support em.
:rockman:
hermolt 30-08-2003, 11:25:AM I prefer AFL to soccer. Sorry, guys. I still love soccer (and even rugby, Alex!) but my heart will always lie with AFL. I was down at the VFL final between Box Hill vs Williamstown today, in the driving rain, in the open and cold, with a pie in my hand, and it was bloody superb. Listen to the coach at 1/4 time and have a kick on the ground etc. Big thumbs up!
Notihng beats meat pies (h)

bingo.
Aussie Culture.
John_Arne_Riise 30-08-2003, 02:37:PM Yeah i love AFL, and i love soccer equally.
Just for the record i support the Sydney Swans in the AFL (top 4 spot beckons!!!) and Liverpool in the EPL
Gareth 30-08-2003, 02:59:PM To me AFL is just burley blokes in as little clothes as possible grabbing each other... :S
rhizome17 30-08-2003, 04:06:PM since Rugby was mentioned I may as well pitch in... don't know anything about AFL, I think rugby league is glorified bullrush, and most of the time I will be following football, oblivious to the fact that 90% of the population are following Rugby Union...
but then, when the international union season starts, and there is the haka, and the coolest sports uniform in world sport (I see even Man Utd are copying it for their away strip), then I become a sucker for Rugby.
finger 30-08-2003, 04:51:PM Considering I'm here I obviously enjoy football.
I never really liked AFL until I went to a few Swans games last season, haven't bothered once they are actually playing good.
Incidently I haven't gone to a competitive game of soccer around here because I simply lack any attachement to the NSL clubs.
Been contemplating supporting Penrith in the NSW state league, but they are pretty much the definition of suckage, and hence not conducive to supporting.

haha, yeah I think you missed the part "little clothes as possible"
Neither Rugby league or Union have shorts 5 sizes too small (in the last few seasons this has been changed to 3 sizes too small-change for the better ;)), and singlet tops...
As for scrums, they're useless in League anyway, just a way to get the forwards out of the game for one play. In union, they guys actually push...The difference between this and AFL is...umm the clothes arent small ;)
Andrew 12-09-2003, 11:46:AM i dont like afl but its always on when im bored so it makes me watch it, but i really really enjoy watching RUgby union its so kool. Especially when the likes of Wilkinson(ENG), Howlett(NZ), Sailor(OZ) or Russel(SA) are playing
Budge 12-09-2003, 04:22:PM the two sports are neck and neck with me. love my 'pool, but ive been followin tha eagles since i was a lil tacker...and afl is a sweet sport, so much fun to play...and this really should be moved to oceania...
John_Arne_Riise 12-09-2003, 05:22:PM COME ON SWANS!!!!
Getting excited, Grand Final berth beckons for the Swans.
maddog1983 12-09-2003, 05:52:PM Ok let me just say this : some people who have posted in this thread have some HUGE mis conceptions of AFL . Skip-e mate the tigh shorts is old warrick capper era late 80s .... the fact you said those states are pre dominately AFL and NSW and QLd are Rugby ... maybe so but Brisbane 2 times in a row premiers hail from Qld and Sydney this year are arguably the leagues most improved team and only 1 game away from the grand final. (US readers grand final= super bowl)
For me i love AFL much more than soccer ... purely because i grew up on it ... i grew up on soccer to but i played aussie rules much more and it now runs in my veins. I also love Cricket another great sport to play.
The reason soccer gets no coverage in Australia is because our league is **** no body goes except for here in WA a "majority' of people would prefer to have the AFL or cricket or rugby or Tennis or anything Australian ahead of Englands major soccer league ... fair enough i think despite the fact i wish it was on tv more
Once The nsl can get its sh it together then it may get some tv time ... if you want to see all the premier league goals SBS 730 monday nights... works for me :)
Go FREO
