After Guti, Solari and maybe Portillo the rest of the squad are all unexperienced players essentially. After a few injuries, and we know there will be some, who will play? Can they rotate the squad well enough to keep the players away from injury and still get results?

RM may have a few of the best players in the world, but they are not near the best team in Europe. Juve, Milan, Inter, Bayern, Man Utd, and even Chelsea have better squads IMO. I put them at par now with Arsanal, Lazio and Roma....good teams but they all are missing quality sqaud depth.

Bet there's going to be lots of goals at both ends in Real matches. I'm not a fan of Helguera when he plays at the back, although he's excellent in midfield. We'll just have to wait and see how their defence performs. Pavon, however, will most probably develop as a player if he gets to play week in week out.

Just because a team decides to go younger doesn't mean they got worse. The defense is *IMPROVED* over last season, simply because Pavon is better than Hierro. Helguera moving to the defensive midfield spot will now not happen, because it was only going to occur if we got Ayala or Metzelder. However, our defense will now look like:

Salgado - Helguera - Pavon - R. Carlos

While it's certainly not amazing, it's certainly not bad. We have two Spanish internationals there and a Brazilian World Cup winner. Oh, and Roberto Carlos just won UEFA Defender of the Year, so he obviously isn't as bad defensively as all you people think.

Anyhow, *REGARDLESS* of how our defense is, absolutely nobody can deny that we have the most intimidating offense in the world.

Absolutely no club in the world can boast five superstars up front like that, and once the chemistry is there with Beckham joining the club and Figo adjusting to the left side, watch out. the problem with madrid without makelele is that the team is broken in the middle.. with no real connection between defence and offense.. and no one to recuperate balls in the midfield.. if they dont find a good replacement for Makelele.. Madrid is gonna suffer

Beckham is not average, but he is not a top 10 player either. So he looks average when you compare him to the rest of the starting RM midfield and forwards.

If you win the midfield battle, you wont have to worry about losing the ball much, therefore you dont have to involve the defenders most. No matter what their defense looks like they still are one of the best teams in the world though. Your best defense is your attack. One thing though, I think they'll have trouble against organized teams. Teams that get many men behind the ball and then strike on the counter attack.

beckham's not a bad player and he's not "average". i've said it before, he's overrated because of his hype, but he's so overrated that he's underrated. dunno if that makes sense but people tend to forget that he actually is a good player.

and del piero doesn't "suck" either.

i'd agree that real are weaker than last year, with the loss of makelele being most significant. zidane and the rest of the attackers will tell you how important makelele is to them as he'll do all the dirty work for them. they lost a lot of depth too. anyways, it's still too early to say who'll win the cl, but now i think if there's any advantage, it's towards juventus.

the way i see it, the only problem with having so many offensive players is that none of them are really ball winners and none of them are really great defenders or tacklers. someone's gonna have to win balls and supply it to them. someone said it before, but i can see real having a lot of trouble with those organized teams that just stay back, defend, and wait for a counter attack.
