View Full Version : Pick Your England Strikers
Drinky UKSN 11-03-2000, 12:57:PM In the 22 players that will go to Euro 2000, Kevin Keegan will most likely select four. So, name your quartet from this list:
Alan Shearer
Robbie Fowler
Emile Heskey
Michael Owen
Kevin Phillips
Teddy Sheringham
Andy Cole
Personally, I would take Shearer, Fowler, Owen and Heskey, provided Fowler is fit. Kevin Phillips and Andy Cole may get plenty of typical 'English striker' goals (eg tap-ins, headers, physical play), but they just won't be able to do it at international level. Sheringham is now past his best. Ship him off to the MLS or Japan where all has-been stars go when they want to boost their bank balances. With that quartet, England would be a good bet.
WaltonSw 11-03-2000, 02:45:PM I think Keegan's four will be:
Shearer
Heskey
Owen
Phillips.
He may take Cole as a stand-by player.
Neutral 11-03-2000, 03:39:PM God (er..I mean Fowler)
Owen
Heskey
Shearer
If Robbie's injured then I think Keegan should take Phillips. But for next season it's going to be amazing to see 3 of England's top strikers on the same team. Everyone talks about how exciting a Heskey/Owen partnership will be, but I'm more excited to see Heskey and Fowler play together - Heskey's fast, strong and full of hard work, while Fowler's one of the most dangerous finishers in Britain.
Drinky UKSN 11-03-2000, 07:09:PM Interesting to see no-one (so far) has picked Cole - perhaps some people are at last being sensible and seeing how overrated he is... some hope. Wait for the United Zealots to tear our heads off. ;-)
Russian Rocket 11-03-2000, 07:48:PM I think Cole, Heskey, Owen and probably Shearer will make it.
sheringham behind owen and collymore
Neutral 12-03-2000, 03:49:AM Sheringham and Collymore?
Surely you jest...
DirkDiggler 12-03-2000, 04:37:AM Maybe bring in Collymore if he can keep up the form that got him his hat trick
Black devil 12-03-2000, 06:00:AM Shearer, Phillips, Cole and Owen must be the selected players.
PhilWalsh 12-03-2000, 09:56:AM I would select 5 fowards for euro 2000.
Shearer
Heskey
Owen
Cole
Philips
Neo_9 12-03-2000, 10:35:AM Emile Heskey
Michael Owen
Kevin Phillips
Andy Cole
Becks7 13-03-2000, 02:34:AM PhilWalsh has got it right....
and yes, Cole should be included, love him or hate him, he scores goals and that's what matters
Giggs and co 13-03-2000, 02:52:AM sheringham
cole
shearer
owen
I@n S 13-03-2000, 03:39:PM I would have to say:
Shearer
Phillps
Heskey
Maybe Owen but he’s had injury problems this season. So instead I would say:
Sherringham.
I think its time to go back to the times when there was a limit to how many foreigners are in each English club. Because there are very few up coming Engish stars anymore. http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/frown.gif
Turtle 13-03-2000, 04:37:PM Shearer, Owen, Heskey and Phillips
Drinky UKSN 13-03-2000, 05:16:PM Cole scores goals? Lets face it, most strikers in the Premiership would score goals in the current United side. Thats not my point though. IMO, Phillips and Cole are the kinds of players who will always get hatfuls fo goals in the Premiership. The open way that most English clubs play gives them plenty of chances. Put them in front of a well-drilled international defence from South America, Serie A, or the cream of the Bundesliga, and you'll find that they'll dry up because they'll only get one clear-cut chance per game if they're lucky. Owen and Shearer have shown that they can cope with scoring against a continental defence, while Heskey is too useful and versatile as a sheer physical, pacey force, a type of player that only seems to exist over here, to ignore. I would also take Fowler, as if he can be rehabilitated, he is one of the top five strikers in the world.
Kewell the Jewell 14-03-2000, 11:24:AM GET RID OF SHEARER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and drinky Phillips is a very goos striker..i mean look at most of his goals...alot of them are created by himself while Cole is put through most of the time
saying that i think the striker should be:
Owen
Heskey
Cole
Phillips
Fowler is he was fit
Mr. Knowitall 17-03-2000, 06:03:AM Elton John and Steven Tyler.
steve-e-o 17-03-2000, 04:24:PM God (sorry, King Kev) should pick:
Alan Shearer
Emile Heskey
Michael Owen
Kevin Phillips (though it pains me to say it)
Kewell, why get rid of Shearer? What has he got to do to prove he is the best striker in the country? I know Kevin Phillips has scored more Premiership goals, but in total, Shearer has several more, and is top of the scoring charts for a Premiership player.
Mr. Knowitall 18-03-2000, 04:17:AM Lord Steven Regal and Davy Boy Smith
Kewell the Jewell 18-03-2000, 02:53:PM steve-o-e
shearer is the past of english football and i belive they should move on and give heskey a shot...also give Cole and decsent go
a_shearer 18-03-2000, 04:33:PM Kewell, you're not listening.
Shearer is the second highest scorer in the Premiership. He performs. Unlike many of the youngsters on the squad.
I doesn't make any sense to get rid of him just because he has experience.
I would pick:
Alan Shearer
Emile Heskey
Michael Owen
Kevin Phillips
Mr. Knowitall 19-03-2000, 04:08:AM Austin Powers and Fat Bastard (He converted)
Kewell the Jewell 19-03-2000, 11:48:AM i know Shearer is a great striker but i dont think he fits into Englands future plans..
especially since he retiring after Euro 2000
But you are right about the experience factor though...
who would you pick to partner Owen then????
Becks7 19-03-2000, 05:58:PM I am posting again just to say Keegan better pick SHEARER & COLE.... I am totally positive that if Keegan gives COLE a decent chance at it, that they will make a great duo....
and imagine OWEN coming off the bench in the 70th minute when the opposition's defence is tired and worn-out- he will provide a great change of pace... and my last pick would be HESKEY, Fowler is injury-prone and HESKEY is a great big target in the air.... if he has space, Keegan could also pick PHILLIPS....
--------
starters
--------
SHEARER
COLE
-----
bench
-----
OWEN
HESKEY
& PHILLIPS (iff there is space left in the squad)
a_shearer 20-03-2000, 02:24:AM If I had my way, it would be...
Shearer & Heskey starting
w/
Owen & Philips as the subs.
Owen & Shearer & Philips & Heskey would also be interesting.
So many goal-scoring combinations!!
Kewell the Jewell 20-03-2000, 12:42:PM Just as matter of interest does anyone think that Kewell would make the England Squad if he were an pom??
maybe as a left sided midfielder???
Neutral 20-03-2000, 07:33:PM Due to the complete lack of left-sided midfielders Kewell with a broken leg could make the England squad. (and he'd still be better than LeSaux) http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/smile.gif
Even if he didn't play on the left, if he was English there'd be no question he'd be on the team.
a_shearer 20-03-2000, 08:08:PM Yup. Kewell would be on the squad.
Kewell the Jewell 21-03-2000, 11:00:AM i rekon that Wilcox could make it as teh left midfielder....
hes been performing brilliantly for Leeds
who else is there?
Kenny_II 21-03-2000, 12:18:PM Sheringham, Heskey, Cole and Owen
Canoe 21-03-2000, 08:18:PM Shearer, Philips, Heskey, Cole and Owen
As for who starts will depend on what formation is played. Personally I think the 3-5-2 played against Argentina is the best for England. In that case I'd have Heskey and Shearer upfront, with Owen off the bench if England is trailing or Cole/Philips if England are level or leading.
Kewell, the question is whether they would've knighted Marc Overmars had he been a englishman( take this with the pinch of salt it was meant to be served with )
ogalthorpe 21-03-2000, 09:40:PM I think Mr. Knowitall has made the best picks so far.
I would take...
Fowler, Owen, Heskey, and Cole
I know Keegan will pick Shearer, but he shouldn't. Shearer has become too much of a burden to the team. He wants everything done his way. His retirement should come two months early!
As far as left-sided midfielders go, doesn't McManaman usually switch to the left for England? Has everyone forgotten about Macca?
Becks7 21-03-2000, 11:36:PM first off, Macca is so over-rated it's not funny.... secondly, he recently said if he had to choose between Real Madrid and England, he would pick Real.... right now, it looks like Wilcox will be the man on the left... who else is there?
Becks7 21-03-2000, 11:40:PM Macca is so over-rated it's not funny.... also, he recently said that he would put Real Madrid before England... looks like Wilcox will be the man on the left.... who else is there?
and as for Kewell, I bet David O'Leary wouldn't mind him playing for England.... would he?
Neutral 22-03-2000, 12:34:AM Macca is a right sided midfielder, so I don't know why everyone cr@ps on him when he plays bad for England when Keegan on the LEFT wing - I wonder how well Beckham or Anderton would play on the left wing. If you think he's overrated just put in the tapes of Euro 96 when El Tel played him on the right wing - he terrorised left backs - or you could just look at his penultimate season at Liverpool - when he dribbled past the entire Celtic team in the dying seconds to win the tie, or how he did the same the next week against Aston Villa - or how he single handedly won the League Cup for Liverpool with two excellent goals.
As for left wingers - I'd put Steve Guppy on the left, he may not play for a high profile team, but Shearer and Heskey would have a field day with Guppy's crosses from the left, and Beckham's from the right.
Mr. Knowitall 22-03-2000, 02:06:AM all four of the Monkies. They could play with a 4-2-4 formation.
Kewell the Jewell 22-03-2000, 12:06:PM becks
i think O'Leary would rather have Kewell playing for Ireland.....
steve-e-o 30-03-2000, 10:39:PM In all honesty, Kewell, Harry Kewell is without a doubt one of the world's brightest footballers, and would walk onto the left side of midfield for England. Back to Shearer, it's true he should perhaps make way for younger talent sometime soon, but this should surely happen in a friendly, not in a major competition, where experience is a key factor.
Fat Abbott 30-03-2000, 11:24:PM We need Juvegoose and TeKnoS to say something stupid about Mr. Knowitall.
England should play heskey, and have a 9-0-1 formation, to protect david seaman. Of course, they shouldn't play any good defenders, straight out of the watford squad i say.
