Vitor Damas, former Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper and coach, died tonight, victim of cancer, at the age of 55.

Damas was one of the best goalkeepers ever in portuguese football, and won 2 portuguese leagues (69/70 and 73/74), 3 cups and played for Portugal 29 times, including one World Cup match in 1986.

Besides Sporting (743 times, the club record), he also played at Santander (Spain), Vitoria Guimaraes and Portimonense.

He also coached Sporting in two different times, although only temporarly.

I dunno 'bout you's guys...but this worries me...in fact I always get worried when athletes die at such a young age by something that can be avoidable....cancer. You'd think that with all the technology and knowledge we have that everyone would know what activities lead to cancer and what activities walk away from cancer.

What cancer afflicted Damas??

I wonder if he was a smoker.....it always amazes me to see former footballers smoking. Apparently Frank Rijkaard is a pack-a-day smoker..:o

ahhhh.....nothing makes me more confused than seeing a coach, a man in charge of his players cardio-vascular health, fire up a butt on the sideline. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Rikjaard is Dutch. Its probably a pack of wacky tobacci that he be smokin'

Portuguese football suffered a gigantic loss with his death.

Vitor Damas will always be remembered, all the kids that saw him play wanted to be like him. Some of my uncles and older cousins have always told be that Damas was the only keeper that could face Eusébio and win. And it was true.

Read this:

O derradeiro palpite

Damas fazia parte do painel de apostadores do jornal "Expresso", que todas as semanas tenta adivinhar os resultados dos "grandes". No último palpite, Damas prognosticou uma vitória do Sporting sobre o Nacional por 2-0. Acertou. Pela última vez na vida.

Let your soul rest in peace in heaven, where the great warriors rest after a life of challenges.
