View Full Version : TO NEUTRAL!
sabaho 01-11-2000, 07:13:PM hey mate..i wanted to ask u some questions abt PS...
i am thinking abt getting one..but the logical choice is PS2..lasts long...
however...is it true that it runs most games?have u tried iss on it?
w/ it's little availability..and the not very many EXTRA GAMES TO PS games
do u think geting a PS1 is a better deal?
especially no great need fro internet dVD..
PS1 seems tempting now as it's cheaper and available but i don't want to throw it a way later!
beavis 01-11-2000, 09:14:PM Even though I'm not Neutral.. I thought I could give you some advice... The PS2 runs almost all PSX games except a few that were released in the early stages of PSX (like '95 '96).
I would assume that you're probably wanting one to play ISS. A PS1 would run you about $99. It would give you ISS for now.. but I doubt if anymore ISS releases will come out for PSX in North America. As for the PS2, you probably won't be able to get your hands on one until spring. Even then, if you decided to go with one.. the availability of ISS is pretty low. I think MLS Gamenight is coming out for PS2 in 1st Quarter 2000, but I think it's a translation of the KCEO/Major A version of the game. I own a Japanese PS2 and I have Konami Jikkyou World Soccer 2000.. but it is not much different from the N64 version and is no match for the KCET team. Winning Eleven 5 is coming to the Japanese PS2 in March though, and that's the main reason I bought the system along with being able to play Winning Eleven 2000 for Japanese PSX now.
But, if you're not looking to get into the import game (which is pretty expensive) I would suggest going with the PS1 for now. It seems like the KCET team releases in North America at least 6 months to a year later than Japan... so you probably wouldn't be seeing a PS2 game by the Evolution team in the US/Canada until late 2001/early 2002.
PolishPower 01-11-2000, 09:18:PM Here is my perspective:
This is a very hard decision my friend, but I decided against getting PS2. I would say a lot depends on what kind of computer set-up you have. My old computer set up 2 years ago was so crappy that I couldn't play FIFA 98 RTWC on it(or any other graphics intensive games), so that's why I bought PS, but now I have an OK computer(it can handle most games on the market quite well), so no need for PS2.
About PS2 capabilities, I read a comparison of Unreal Tournament on PS2 and on PC, the consensus seems to be that PC still looks and plays better than the PS2 version. Lets say you have a 27 inch TV at 500 lines of resolution(the max in USA), compare that to PC games, with 17 or 19 inch monitor that gives you anywhere from 600 to more than 1000 lines of resolution. Simple logic tells you that the computer games, everything else being equal, will always look better than PS2 games(not even mentioning PS).
Also keep in mind the prices of PS 2 games. PS games right now are more expensive than PC games. FIFA 2000 for PC now sells for $15, while PS is still at around $40. New FIFA 2001 is gonna be $35 for PC, $40-45 for PS, and probably $50-55 for PS2.
sabaho 01-11-2000, 09:57:PM thanks for the info guys..i was hoping other ppl would come also
beavis: i am alrady afan of ISS..but u r still right i play it on the emulator..ePSXe..which gives better graphics..coz 3-D is enabled
and it works fine for me as i am used to keyboard gaming..
BUT NOW I AM STARTING TO FEEL...the feel of the consoles..as my last one was the AMIGA W/ THE SUPERB JOYSTIC..it was alot more fun esp.multiplay
- what i know is that:
kceo is making iss200 for psx and the ps2 game(november)
kcet is making evolution2 for psx for december or february?
CRITICAL POINT IS THAT SINCE I HEARD THAT SONY R TRYING TO DIFFERENTIATE PRODUCTS PS1 WILL NOT DIE AND PERHAPS ISS GAMES WILL CONTINUE ON PS?
polish power:what u said is exactly what was keeping me away from these consoles..but it may be enjoyment...atmosphere..and especially for the ISS games
i don't have asuper computer but most games run fine..but i mostly play soccer games only.
Neutral 02-11-2000, 01:00:AM Polish - you are so wrong my friend. I have a JVC 27 inch TV with DVD component input and a comb filter and Madden 2001 sh!ts on absolutly EVERY PC game I have ever seen. It's unbeliveable - I wish you could come over to my house to see it - I can't even look at my PC anymore and I just got me a 32 Meg GeForce a few months ago.
The DVD component input is amazing, and I don't know why sony sent those crappy LCD screens to EB with the PS2 demos. Having played the full version of Fifa 2001 with my friend who reviews games for a gaming site, I can tell you that if Fifa 2001 PS2 looks HALF as good as Madden does it will be better than Fifa 2001 for the PC. I also have SSX on the PS2 and it looks incredible.
As for comparing Unreal Tournament - it's a PC port that was done in a hurry so that's why it wasn't impressive. Take a look at Dead or Alive: Hardcore to see what else the PS2 can do - and these are FIRST generation games - ie Fifa 97 looked crap on the PSX, but Fifa 2001 looks quite nice. I can't imagine what Madden 2003 will look like....
Neutral 02-11-2000, 01:04:AM Sabaho,
(sorry I forgot about your question because I was surprised at Polish Power's comments)
To be honest, if all you want to play is ISS - get a PSX rather than a PS2. After trying ISS PE on the PS2, it doesn't make the graphics that much better. You can also easily MOD Chip your PSX and play the Japanese version of ISS PE2 when it comes out.
If you're interested in other PS2 games then yes, you should get one - but make sure you have a good TV so you can use S-Video or DVD component input. There are a lot of good PS2 games out right now, and more on the way, but KCET ISS game is going to take a while to get to the US.
sabaho 02-11-2000, 01:35:AM thanks man..but do u think the ps1 will be
burned? soon most games will be on ps2 only?
do u have any news abt ISS? or is that just your thought
Neutral 02-11-2000, 03:00:AM No I don't think the PSX will get burned - if you don't already have one you've missed 5 years of one of the best consoles of all time. Even this year with all the talk of the DC (which is excellent - although not great for soccer games), and the PS2 the best console was the PSX - games like Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross, ISS PE, Spiderman, Front Mission 3, Dino Crisis 2 etc.
As for future support - well there are approx 70 million PSXs sold, so I think there will surely be future support - heck Final Fantasy 9 is coming out on the PSX NOT the PS2!
As for ISS PE2 - I heard it's coming out this Christmas, but for North America I think it will take a while - actually I'm kinda worried because ISS PE didn't sell at all here in North America (I bought a copy), and MLS GameNight isn't selling well either (I bought a copy of that too...honest)- while EA will release crap Fifa 2001 and it will sell more copies than anything else....Even if it doesn't come out here (I'm sure it eventually will), you could still get the Jap PSX version, or the European version and then patch it - you're a CD Burner wiz so you should know about that.
simonius 02-11-2000, 03:07:AM Neutral,
I'm thinking of getting a PS2. Do you live in America? If so where did you buy it?
Neutral 02-11-2000, 03:16:AM Simmonius,
I pre-ordered it a few months ago, and I was lucky - I live in Canada, and while everyone pre-ordered theirs at EB, I went to Compucentre. I was able to pick it up on the first day without having to wait in any lines at all, and I only had to put $50 down for the initial deposit.
Right now there's a real shortage, but Sony say they're releasing 100,000 every week until next year - so your best bet in USA is to go to your local Best Buy, Toys R Us, or EB and ask them if you can pre-order one - you should be able to get one before December. I know it sucks but there's too much demand and Sony are milking it. http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/frown.gif
Don't order from any online places though - a lot of people have been screwed over from places like Gamecentre who promised a console on launch day and those people who ordered still haven't got theirs.
I just finished playing some Madden - it's incredible, I was running and the LB pushed me out of bounds and I, stumbled and hit down one of those guys who carries the first down markers! Graphically the game is incredible - you can see grass stains on the players clothes as they get up after a tackle, and you can see the individual pads, tape on their fingers, you can even see recievers squint as they get a blindsided hit. If Konami can make a game that looks this good and plays like ISS PE, I won't ever leave my room....

sabaho 02-11-2000, 03:48:AM GREAT..
p.s. i am no burner wiz i don't even have a CD-RW!
but u have t try that emu..it makes no sense if u have the ps..but to see how different GAMPLAY IS and how good the graphics can be w/ if on PC
for running european or jap games do u need acertain tv or cables? or jsut a chip
beavis 02-11-2000, 03:55:AM For a japanese console, it will work fine on any US TV. They use the NTSC system just like North America. The voltage is the same too. But for a Euro console, you would need a converter because they're on 220v power. Plus, they use the PAL TV format which wouldn't work with most North American TV sets.
Bergyfan 02-11-2000, 04:04:AM You should buy Dreamcast, and then get the special CD(s) of Bleem!cast, which plays PS game son DC and makes graphics better than PS2. Isnt that cool? Each Bleem!cast cd is 20 bucks, and ISS is probably 0 bucks, maybe 5. How about that?
Neutral 02-11-2000, 04:20:AM Bergyfan - have you played MSR for the DC? My friend has the PAL version and it kicks serious butt.
As for Bleemcast - at the end of the day, it's still an emulator, and if Sabaho wanted to use an emulator he'd use one of the superior ones for the PC.
If he uses a PSX he gets the full experience + he can use the PSX controller which was ISS PE designed for use with. Is Bleemcast already out? Did you hear about Sega's losses - they've lost several hundred million dollars over the past few years and they may develop for other systems now (!).
Bad news for gamers if the DC goes the way of the dinosaur (I don't think it will):
Here's the article from Computer and Videogames:
Sega losses cause major concern
After four years losses in a row, over $500 million and an industry finally coming round to the fact that Sega's in serious trouble, the company hits all-time low
Sega's predictions of posting losses of over $200 million for the current financial year caused panic on the Nikkei on Friday and sent Sega shares down to their lowest point in the company's history of active trading. Translated to English, Sega has lost more money than God over the last four years and Dreamcast is obviously not going to go the full distance in terms of shelf life. And that's that.
In the last two years, Sega has made official losses of over $500 million. The company has now admitted that development teams will be focusing on working on other platforms as well as Dreamcast. We hate to say we told you so, but we did.
"There's no confidence in Dreamcast," said a highly-placed UK development source. "Why should people make games for the machine when there's no money to be made?"
According to Sega Europe employees, over 100 Dreamcast titles are scheduled for launch in the coming year, but many developers in the UK have already factored the machine out of their product schedules to focus on PlayStation 2 and Xbox.
Sega is now focusing all forward-looking attention on network and online gaming. Hit this for the company's announcement regarding a new company venture with Nintendo.

Fotbalguy 02-11-2000, 04:46:AM I got my PS2 on the second day. I pre-ordered it from Toysrus.com and got it the first day. I didn't even put any money down. It is really awesome, and I have SSX and it blows all the PC games away. If you have the money get PS2 really fast and play ISS on that and also the other PS2 soccer games that will come out for it. If you just want to only play ISS jsut get a used playstation for around 45 bucks and then get PS2 later next year when it might go down 50 dollars.
Also Neutral, are you getting Fifa 2001 at all? of so for what platform PC or PS2. I might get it for pc even though i hate it, but then again maybe the Ps2 will make it more fun to play it. oh yeah, EA SUCKS!!!!!!
sabaho 02-11-2000, 04:49:AM this feeling is getting stronger and stronger..thanks guys
well anyone uses modchip for backups isn't
it?
coz i think i can be getting(back home in Egypt) brand new games
with the CD just like the orginal..not just a balnk cd w/ copy for under $10!!!
but they r PAL
BERGYFAN..thanks man i thought abt it..but i think the advantage for sony, aside from iss
is the NUMBER OF GAMES available
Fotbalguy..i really don't know..thing is i am already playing ISS on emu but??

PolishPower 02-11-2000, 05:44:PM Neutral: I can only go by what I read as am yet to see actual PS2 in action! So I believe you that Madden looks awesome, and yes once the programmers figure out the ins and out of the new system the games will definitely improve.
There is an iron-clad rule in console vs Computer battles though, which states that within a year or two computers surpass the performance of console, this being true going back to Atari 2600 and Apple IIC, Playstation and PentiumII etc. I read this article in Computer Games that within a year computers will be matching performance of PS2, and by 2003 the best pc games/machines will make PS 2 games look like PS games look to us now(technologically behind the times) Well I guess we shall see.
I think the bottom line is the games you wanna play. If you're dying to play a title only available on PS2 then you probably will need to buy this system. But if you're more into PC kind of games like Interplay's D&D games, Close Combat series, Fallout series, Mech Warrior series etc, obviously PC is the place to be.
BTW judging by reaction to FIFA 2001(even worse than 2000) I think I might wait few months until it appears in the discount bin for 14.99!
Neutral 03-11-2000, 12:13:AM Spot on Polish, although I think PC's a little more behind the curve when it comes to graphics - Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast is still better looking than any PC racer I've seen, same for NFL2K1 on the DC - and Madden 2001 for the PS2 is better looking than both! But PC's will ALWAYS catch-up sooner or later.
Like you said there are some games you're just not going to see on a console - just like Baldur's Gate, and of course I thank my PC every day for Championship Manager. I'm interested to see how the X-Box may bridge the gap between PC's and Consoles.
Polish,
have you played ISS Pro Evolution (not ISS 98)?
As for Fifa 2001 - no, it's not worse than Fifa 2000, it's actually (IMO) better than Fifa 99, however the AI in the Fifa series is so shallow compared to ISS PE that you really can't go back. My friend who reviews games has already written an ISS PE/ESPN MLS GameNight review and I'll post the link once it's up.
sabaho 05-11-2000, 10:26:AM I WOULD LIKE TO THANK U ALL 4 YOUR HELP
i think i've decided to get a PS2...
so this means i'll be waiting for a while since it's sold out...and even if i can get it..a move like this at this time in the semester
means i'll flunk all my classes!
well maybe i'll be glad to flunk then http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
but i'll still wait
