File-sharing suit against 66-year-old sculptor dropped

BOSTON, Massachusetts(AP) -- The recording industry has withdrawn a lawsuit accusing a 66-year-old woman, who says she didn't even have file-sharing software, of illegally sharing hundreds of songs including rap.

The lawsuit against sculptor Sara Seabury Ward was among 261 lawsuits filed this month by the Recording Industry Association of America as part of a fight against Internet file-trading.

It accused her of illegally sharing more than 2,000 songs through the file-sharing service Kazaa, including rapper Trick Daddy's "I'm a Thug."



The industry threatened to hold her liable for up to $150,000 for each song.

But Ward's lawyer, Jeffrey Beeler wrote in a letter to industry representatives that Ward was a "computer neophyte" who never even installed file-sharing software on her computer, The Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

In fact, Ward uses a Macintosh computer at home, and Kazaa runs only on Windows-based computer programs, Beeler noted.

The case, filed in federal court in Boston, was dropped Friday.

However, RIAA lawyer Colin Zick added that "we will continue our review of the issues you raised and we reserve the right to refile the complaint against Mrs. Ward if and when circumstances warrant."

Neither Zick nor Ward immediately returned calls seeking comment Wednesday morning.

need i tell u that the current leader of the alp is a right winger and beazley was a solid right leader, where keating and hawke were borderline in the right.

As for Aussie leaders, it is no different to any contemporary labour leader anywhere. They are all right wingers. Doesn't mean the general support base is, though. Need I remind you.

i dunno what helen clarke is running over there... buth thankfully the majority of support base is right wing for the alp. and also, if they crumble just go liberal, which have similar policies... eaither way the democrats and greens are useless wastes of space.

Helen Clark is running a centrist government. NZLP the main party, when they wish to pass centre-left legislation, like the legalisation of prostitution, or banning the smacking of children (which is only a few months away), they call on the support of the greens. When they wish to pass centre-right legislation, they call on the support of a party called United Future, which is a mix of old-style conservatives and liberal christian.
Things could be much worse. I am not a supporter of the NZLP myself, but I do recognise that things would be much worse if we had a right wing government. The fact is Helen CLark has the economy running better than it ever has under a right wing government, and minimum wage levels are rising, and people are generally better off in work and lifestyle than the 10 years of right wing rule previously.

banning the smacking of children... pft... that way we have more croocks and crack whores running the street... i say bring back the cain in schools.

its an open invitation to let kids run wild... parents should be allowed to discipline children the way they want to.

1) I personally blame the right wing faction of the Labor for making the Labor party look identical to the Liberal party makiing it redundant and a waste of space - I bet Labor will not win the next election, only the Liberal party can lose it.

2) How do you know that the majority of labor voters are right wing? what because of memberships? thats not the majority of the voters and doest speek for the voters? according to ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics) Australians are predominately left wing - looking @ the voting numbers of the Green and Democrats it looks like the only other choice for a huge number of left wing voters is for the labor party.
