View Full Version : Manchester United vs Birmingham [P] + [R]
soccerbest 03-10-2003, 01:20:PM I wouldn't risk Rio if he has not recovered from that injury and I don't think Ronaldo will play as Fergie has said he won't play him twice a week. So Fletcher could start.
Howard
G Neville - Silvestre - O'Shea - Fortune
Fletcher - Butt - Keane - Giggs
Scholes - Ruud
I would play Scholes with Ruud upfront instead of Giggs, Giggs is more suited to the left flank.
Christ sake, we need to bounce back and get the 3 points. :rockman:
Bobby 03-10-2003, 01:21:PM Brum could win it, they look strong.
senght 03-10-2003, 01:26:PM Birmingham is strong enuff for a draw 2-2 dude
Fernandez 03-10-2003, 01:26:PM brum could win against arsenal too..... but man u 3-0.... have you heard of the mu backlash? which arsenal could not do.... fletcher first goal and scholes double....
my line-up i think...
------------------Howard--------------------
P.Neville - O'Shea - Silvestre - Fortune
Fletcher ----------Keane---------Giggs
----------Scholes---------Ronaldo----------
----------------v. Nistelrooy-----------------
Bobby 03-10-2003, 01:28:PM Ronaldo will score and own goal, and Howard will get angry and go off for it, pulling the pot noodles from Ronaldo's head, and using words most people have never heard. Brum to win 56-0
/fifafanv1 style pick.
:p
soccerbest 03-10-2003, 01:28:PM well, our reserve beat them last night, hopefully our first-team do the same tomorrow.
Frostwolf 03-10-2003, 01:29:PM birmingham are fourth. they won't lose 3-0.
it might be one of those bolton type games for man u, but i still thinkthey'll produce the goods.
man utd 2 - 1 birmingham city

There is a good chance this could be the weekend, where everyone will have lost atleast one game.
Birmingham - Good runs don't last forever, they might even beat us.
Arsenal - Liverpool Home Advantage, Arsenal have enough quality to take 3 points though.
Chelsea - Likely to stay undefeated domestically this weekend, but it could happen vs Boro.
senght 04-10-2003, 02:31:PM Im tipping Boro to hold Chelsea to a draw. Look at Besiktas lol

Fernandez 04-10-2003, 07:39:PM shokz, ferdy is a doubt.... i think gary will be axed with phil playing there.... o'shea might move to half-back with lucky fortune playing the left full-back...butt or djemba might return to midfield..... but no ronaldo...
shokz 04-10-2003, 07:54:PM The crap about players being axed came out of the rumour mill, Fergie has already set the record straight.
Nobody will get axed.
I think Ferdinand has been deemed fit.

Digitarius 05-10-2003, 02:31:AM A simple win in the end, but when Birmingham had 11 men United struggled to break them down.
The penalty awarded was a penalty, according to the commentator, and Scholes 25-yard drive was terrific. Giggs added one late on so it's good to see the Welshman back on the scoresheet once more.
The sending off I'm not sure. I'll have to look at the replays first. But the commentator and the analyst both agreed that according to the rules of the game Taylor should have walked, so that's fine by me.
mitchell_mufc 05-10-2003, 04:46:AM well-done man u

I will always argue for commonsense. That was literally a splitsecond foul.
Even if you have some ridiculous rule like never awarding a red if the penalty is scored and with it the team leads.
Anything but a sendingoff and a penalty for a bang bang play like that.
On another note, ManU fans criticize Forlan way too much, the guy has a smoothness to his control and passing that not many players have.
manufan 05-10-2003, 08:12:AM Maybe if Forlan played a lil more, people would see that he really is a good player. Fergie just changes the tactics around a lot.
senght 05-10-2003, 09:28:AM Birmingham just crumbled after that red card. Good wn for Man U tho.
Fernandez 05-10-2003, 09:31:AM the red card is a disgrace..... from a man u fan...it would be a red card if scholes was wide and one-on-one while trying to cut in, push the ball inside and get tripped by gk is a red card...
soccerbest 05-10-2003, 01:11:PM Fletcher is good!
Play Ronaldo on the left and Fletcher on the right once Giggsy and Solskjaer retire. Then look for another young player like Ronaldo who can play on both flanks as reserve. :)
Salty 05-10-2003, 02:55:PM It was reasonably early over here, so I watched a little of it...
Yes, the red card shown was very poor, if the goalies around the world are getting penalised for defending their goal, you think about it...
And I'm sick of teams winning over penalties and getting praised for a good game when their only upwind was the silly player doing somthing stupid in the first place, seems a lot like AFL umpires over here :D

Damn,i hope giggs retirment plan is a long way away.:(
me too, he is the best left midfielder in the world....
The red card was well deserved, the GK was the last man, and he cought Scholes on the legs. Rules are rules, it was a professional foul, and a red card is a must.
Fernandez 05-10-2003, 04:35:PM but its a disgrace.....and we also had the privelege to take on a savageless...no pun intended birmingham...
shokz 05-10-2003, 04:38:PM Why is it a disgrace.
Fernandez 05-10-2003, 04:50:PM scholes was going wide.... he was not cuttin' in... i would rather see man u win 1-0 against 11-man than 3-0 against 10....

That doesnt matter, he was the last man, it was a goal scoring opportunity, Scholes was denied that opportunity with a foul, If you watch the replay carefully, you can see that he went in after Scholes put the ball to his left.
Keeper or Outfield player.
Full marks to the referee.

If anything the referee should be banned from all soccer related activities for the rest of his life...full marks is a discrace because, well god he's the bloody goalkeeper, he can do whatever he feels like.
But then again, what's the point of getting a Man Utd. fan to see it from a Birmingham point of view  ;) :p
shokz 05-10-2003, 06:09:PM Yea.
SB9Dragon 05-10-2003, 07:48:PM IMO it was sorta harsh to give a red card, but it was a last man foul... I would have given a yellow, though FIFA is asking for no leniency... or is that not a word??
man united forever 06-10-2003, 03:46:AM The penalty was fair and clear-cut, but the red card, while a technically correct decision, was slightly harsh on Birmingham, and in previous seasons where referees were not under as much pressure to adhere to the rulebook, it might have warranted a yellow at worst. United went on to win the match easily and the next two goals were great to watch. Giggs was showing glimpses of his form of old - running at defenders, showing his pace and easing past them and displaying magnificent close control. Scholes and Keane ran the game, but my only gripe has to be with Phil Neville - his passing was terrible. It's no use being a great ball-winner if you're going to give it away in a second. He did everything else right - covering all areas of the pitch, marking up, etc. It's just his passing that let him down.

monkee 06-10-2003, 02:23:PM I was in the far end from the penalty decision and it looked like a pen from where I was sitting. The replay on ITV's bog-standard version of MotD confirmed what I thought, though it was harsh to send the keeper off though as it was more of a clumsy challenge, however under the laws of the game he had to go. Was it Cisse that got booked for arguing with the ref over it?
United's performance was good though, if not spectacular. Birmingham started bright enough but only threated twice throughout the entire match. Contrary to popular belief the red-card did not change the flow of the game. United were beginning to dominate before then, but after the red card it was going to be difficult for the Brummies to get back in the game.
Giggs has to be man of the match. His running with the ball terrorized the Birmingham defense as he seemingly turned his opponents with ease and he rounded off a good goal after a well-timed and placed pass from Diego Forlan. The only area Giggs was lacking was in his final ball, all to often he managed to get through the defense and a good final ball or cross is all that was needed and it often went astray.
The Birmingham fans have to be the worst away fans I've ever seen though, especially when they ended up fighting amongst themselves towards the end. They made a good sing-song before the kick off and then seemed to burn themselves out in the first 5mins of the game. The only time we heard them after that was for one of their numerous (stupid) handball shouts and when they cheered the mentioning of their name by the announcer telling them that they have to wait until United fans have left the ground before going. The handball shouts were taken the piss out of in the end by the United fans who sarcastically shouted handball every time the ball went for a Birmingham throw-in and their player picked the ball up, escalating to a short burst of handball every time a Brum player touched the ball.
A solid performance by United in the end, just what was needed following the defensive errors of mid-week and the approaching International break.
soccerbest 06-10-2003, 02:25:PM I vote Scholesy as man of the match. Giggs had a good game but Scholes was the creative spark for us.
Digitarius 06-10-2003, 11:09:PM will always argue for commonsense. That was literally a splitsecond foul.
Rules are rules. The referee has to abide to them. It is not the man in black's fault, but the rulebook.
Anything but a sendingoff and a penalty for a bang bang play like that.
I can totally understand the lack of need for the sending off, but a penalty? Of course it should be a penalty. You already said that it was a 'foul' and if a foul is committed in the penalty area, should it not be a penalty? The answer is obvious.
If anything the referee should be banned from all soccer related activities for the rest of his life
What? For following the rules? So what about if he, as you suggested, breaks them? Then what are the rules for? Wiping our arses?
Was it Cisse that got booked for arguing with the ref over it?
Yes, I think so.
