View Full Version : Forum's Players Of The Year Vote
Drinky UKSN 21-04-2000, 05:11:PM There has been a debate recently over who is the Premiership player of the season. Lets make it official - reply to this post with your selections in the following categories, and hopefully we'll be able to make up a Forum team of the year in a few days. Feel free to debate people's choices - hopefully we can stir up some discussion here.
Goalkeeper of the Year:
Defender of the Year:
Midfielder of the Year:
Striker of the Year:
Manager of the Year:
Best Young Player of the Year:
Just to kick start us, here are my own selections:
Goalkeeper of the Year: David James
Defender of the Year: Sami Hyypia
Midfielder of the Year: Lee Bowyer
Striker of the Year: Kevin Phillips
Manager of the Year: David O'Leary
Best Young Player of the Year: Michael Bridges
A few potentially controversial choices, but I stick by them. Come on then, give us your thoughts and lets create a Forum Team of the Year 99/00.
Neutral 21-04-2000, 05:32:PM Let's add some more categories that were in the Serie A one:
Goalkeeper of the Year: Thomas Sorenson
- despite the 4-0 pasting last week, Sorenson has been, for me, the most consistent goalie in the league, my second choice would have been Nigel Martyn
Defender of the Year: Sami Hyypia
- What can u say-number one in carling opta, and clearly the best this year, and settled into the English game so quickly, my second choice is Jaap Stam.
Midfielder of the Year: Roy Keane
- I hate him, but he's one of the best in Europe, my second choice is Harry Kewell
Striker of the Year: Kevin Phillips
Not the most talented, but 27 goals and he plays with guys like Roy, Sumerbee and Quinn,
second choice this season is Thierry Henry - took a long time to settle but he's been dynamite in the last half to displace Shearer as my seond choice.
Manager of the Year: Gerard Houllier
Rebuilt Liverpool's defense for less than the cost of Jaap Stam, brought in 'no names' like Camara, Hyypia and Henchoz and made them some of the best in the league, second choice David O'Leary/Alex Ferguson
Best Young Player of the Year: Steven Gerrard
19 and the closest thing England have to Roy Keane, and he's only going to get better. Second choice - Andy Campbell, if he played for a 'big club' he would have recieved so much more praise.
Biggest Bust: Chris Sutton
10 million for what? The most expensive goalkeeper in Britain, Massimo Taibi deserves a mention too.
Most Improved Player: Patrik Berger/David James
In the 3 years prior to Houllier's arrival I don't think I ever saw Berger make a tackle, now he's one of the best in England - brilliant passer, and scores some incredible goals (Tottenham, Man U, Leeds etc). David James deserves a mention, I think John Gregory took away his Playstation, and now he's become a very good goalkeeper - Paul Gerrard also deserves a mention.
MVP: Kevin Phillips
He has 27 goals, Bradford City have 30, that's why Bradford will be relegated and Sunderland will finish in the middle of the table (and if they finish in the top 5 Polish Power will lose his house http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/smile.gif ) I can't think of a comparable runner up because I think he is far and away the most valuable player.
diablo2000 21-04-2000, 07:49:PM GK...Ed DeGoey nobody is having a better year.
Defender....hummh can't argue with Hyypia, but how about Marcel Dessailly?
Midfielder... Kewell is a lock. Even though I'm not a fan, Beckham deserves some consideration here.
Striker...It has to be Kevin Phillips! No if ands or buts.
Manager... Gianluca Vialli. Maybe some would say he has not got the most from a talented team, but that's BS...thy've had a fantastic season.
Young Player... Gerrrard is also a lock.
Bust...has anyone been a bigger dissapointment than Chris Sutton? Well, maybe Davor Suker, could it be Didier Deschamps. Hummh- I give it to Deschamps. He was awful in the big matches for Chelsea.
MVP- Harry Kewell. What would Leeds do without him?
Inter09 21-04-2000, 09:51:PM Best Keeper: Nigel Martyn-He should be England's number one keeper, Seaman sucks.
Best Defender: From what I have seen, I would say Jaap Stam or Gareth Southgate. I haven't seen Hyppia much, so I don't know about him, but I have heard he is very good.
Best Midfielder: Harry Kewell
Best Striker: Kevin Phillips
Best Manager: David O'Leary/Alex Ferguson
Best Young Player: Michael Bridges
I am somewhat biast towards Leeds, b/c Man United is a good team together and I haven't seen Liverpool much.
Iceberg24k 22-04-2000, 03:37:AM Okay here is my selections:
Goalkeeper of the Year: Mark Bosnich
Defender of the Year: Jaap Stam
Midfielder of the Year: David Beckham
Striker of the Year: Kevin Phillips
Manager of the Year: Sir Alex Ferguson
Best Young Player of the Year: Gerrard
I'm biased towards Manchester United, but everyone has their freedom of choice.
AJAX supporter 22-04-2000, 04:17:AM Best Keeper: I like Seaman, but have to say either Nigel Martyn or David James. But then again, Sander Westerveld was also impressive.
Best Defender: Sami Hyppia, widely regarded as a talent with Willem II, now he has shown even in the big league he's got class. Another fine talent from future Ajax coach and genius Co Adriaanse.
Best Midfielder: David Beckham was again brilliant this season. Has had a rough patch by involving his private-life into football and has trouble with his temper sometimes, but all in all, Beckham, should maybe even have gotten that World Player of the Year award by FIFA. And Jamie Rednkapp and Harry Kewell should be recognised.
Best Forward: Phillips who plays with a below avergae team still managed to score 27 goals which is an increddible effort nevertheless. But others desrve a mention like Andy Cole, Emile Heskey, Alan Shearer, and Michael Owen, let's just say they all deserve to be in the Euro 2000 squad.
Rookie of the year: without a dount Steven gerrard
MVP: All these 3 have been very valuable to their team, Phillips,Beckham, and last but not least Keane.
Biggest flop: Sutton, huge price tag, little talent, but he has potential, when will he come to life?
Most improved player: of the whole season, definetely Patrick Berger. Biggest improver during the season is Thierry Henry, the only Gunner player to get a mention.
Talents widely unrecognised, Robbie Keane, Matt Elliot, Paul Merson, Benito Carbone, Paulo Di Canio, Gilles De Bilde, Hamilton Ricard, Gustavo Poyet, Emmanuel Petit, and Patrick Viera.
Drinky UKSN 22-04-2000, 06:38:AM Damn, forgot about Gerrard. He should be my best young player, not Bridges http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/smile.gif Future England Captain there.
Kewell the Jewell 22-04-2000, 08:31:AM Well here are my choices which are bound to be different cause i dont get the chance to see Liverpool play much and im biased towards Leeds but anyway....
GK - Martyn
Def - Stam.....havent seen hypia enuff yet
Mid - Kewell.....Mention:Ginola
Str - Henry...started badly but what a turn around!! Mention....Phillips and Campbell
Most Improved - Eirik Bakke
With Batty's absence has filled in the gap in midfield superbly
Manager - O' Leary/Houllier
This isnt really a award but a player who will become a bigger force in the Premier League will be Paul Scholes....have you ever seen a player hit the ball so cleanly every time???
Canoe 22-04-2000, 10:53:AM Goalkeeper of the year - Westerveld. Everybody ever wonder why Hyypia is as good ? Heck, if Schmeichel could make Berg and Johnsen look like good defenders then Westerveld can make Hyppia look like a god.
Defender of the year - Silvestre . Okay, enough laughing. Hyypia get's the nod, forms a great partnership with Henchoz and Westerveld.
Midfielder of the Year - Kewell. If you need this one explained then please watch that lovely little run he did against Arsenal.
Forward of the year - Phillips. Everybody has already covered why, just one more vote for him.
Manager of the year - Houllier. After a disappointing 1998-99 season liverpool looked set for more doom and gloom, but 2nd and CL position one can surely not give this to anyone else.
Best young player of the year - Gerrard. At long last a good young hard playing mdifielder
Biggest bust - Taibi. Sorry guys, at 10mill Sutton was a flop, but Taibi in the few games he played was downright awful. At least Sutton still plays every now and then, is Taibi not playing on loan in some 2nd div Italian club ??
Most improved - James. As much as I'd hate to say this, James is playing damn good lately.
Most valued player - Phillips, for the same reason as Neutral's post.
Just a quick comment or two regarding some of the other nominees
Diablo2000 - Suker a disappointment ?? He cost 2mill, scored a few goals ( damn, can't say how many, but it must be up at about8 or 9 for the season ) and you dare to compare him to Sutton ??
Iceberg - Bosnich and Stam, you've gotta be kidding ?
Kewell the Jewell 22-04-2000, 02:19:PM Anyone else notice there has been hardly Man U or Arsenal players....
Neutral 22-04-2000, 02:43:PM Roy Keane for sure, and most of Arsenal's best players were injured or suspended for long periods this season.
Mr. Knowitall 22-04-2000, 08:37:PM Manager of the year: Alex Ferguson
Defender of the year: Sol Campbell
Midfielder of the year: Ryan Giggs
Best Striker: Kevin Phillips
Best Goalkeeper:Peter Schmeichel..oops, I mean Ed De Goey
Best young player: Joe Cole
PolishPower 23-04-2000, 01:34:AM I'd vote for Kewell.
blink182 23-04-2000, 01:59:AM GK...E DeGoey - What with the longest run of clean sheets.
Defender....S Cambell - Englands backbone
Midfielder...H Kewell - What can't he do?
Striker...K Phillips - Almost as many goals as Bradford City!
Manager... G Vialli - Had a great season in Champions League
Young Player...M Bridges - Held the top goalscorer title in the early - mid stages of the season
Bust...C Sutton - What can he do? Warm the bench?
Most improved...T Henry - Geez - so many goals in so little matches.
MVP- Martyn and Kewell for Leeds - how many saves has Martyn done to get Leeds out of trouble? And Kewell too - what a legend! Also Phillips for Sunderland - the only other class player they have is Quinn...
Drinky UKSN 23-04-2000, 10:44:AM I'm surprised at the selection of Campbell - he's had a pretty average club season and has made some costly slips at times. Not as many as Gary 'Horse-face' Neville or Mikael 'I'm just sh|t' Silvestre, but he hasn't had a stormer like several others I could mention.
Russian Rocket 23-04-2000, 11:27:AM i think that Taibi is a first goalie for Reggiana (or Regina), both in Italian Serie A.
keeper of the year: 1st:Seaman 2nd:Martyn
defender: 1st:Woodgate(i judge him by his game, not off-pitch scandals) 2nd:Jaap Stam
midfielder: 1st http://www.soccergaming.com/ubb/biggrin.gifavid Ginola 2nd:Beckham
forward: 1st:Kevin Phillips 2nd:Heskey,Cole,Yorke,Flo
manager of the year: Sir Alex Ferguson
young player of the year:
this one is tough... thos youngsters in Leeds played well (Bridges, Kewell, Woodgate)
Also, Chelsea's Morris and Harley had a good season. Heskey, Gerrard and Owen from Liverpool. Aaron Hughes had some terrific matches, not enough, though. Haven't seen Philip Neville play enough. And do you consider Theori Henry as a youngster? If yes, then he should be the one who should get the prize.
Drinky UKSN 24-04-2000, 08:04:PM Come on people, we haven't even got enough for a team yet - please reply to this post instead of just reading it - it only takes a minute :-)
