LONDON, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Three and a half months after billionaire Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea, another Russian tycoon is planning to buy into London rivals Arsenal, a British newspaper reported on Sunday.

The Independent on Sunday said Vladimir Potanin, an oil and mining magnate, was considering investing up to 120 million pounds ($203 million) on a new stadium for Arsenal in return for a share of the club.

Potanin, a former Russian deputy prime minister, is one of the small group of "oligarchs" who were awarded multi-billion dollar industrial empires in the privatisations of Russian industry in the 1990s.

Fellow oligarch Abramovich bought Chelsea three months ago, winning the club the nickname "Chelski" in the British press, and stocked them up with top players.

The Independent on Sunday said Potanin was an Arsenal fan and had flown to London to see the side play. The club are trying to raise 400 million pounds for a new stadium.

The newspaper quoted a "senior associate" of Potanin as saying the Russian "was keen" and had "talked very seriously" about his plan to buy into the team.

this russian guy must be mad if he is to buy arsenal... a team that is struggling in europe despite wins over psv, dortmund, auxerre and roma... and of course, you dun want to buy a team with a guy that could be hated in valencia if he earned that penalty....

as opposed to the ManU CL championship team of 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999.............ahhhhhhhhhhhh, there it is, thank goodness they won 5 CLS ago, because it would have been hell to get to 1958.

ManU has probably lost more matches than Arsenal in Europe in the last five years.

Man Utd have played more matches, because they WIN and PROGRESS.

umm... we're not talking Abramovitch here, are we? Thought this was a different person.

Anyway, why not? I mean Arsenal need money because they're building a new stadium. The flip side is that the Russian guy would own a part of the club and I'm not sure if he has the required skills to run a football club.

me being a gunner fan, don't want this to happen.
we'd be like chelsea, spending and spending and in the end we're gonna need to rotate players.
no good.
maybe buy some cover for vieira and the centre backs, that'd be useful.

Just because the guy could buy Arsenal doesn't mean he would be a second Roman Abramovich, this guy would probably pump most of the money into the stadium to name it after himself:p

But seriously that sure would be something... though IMO Arsenal wouldn't need a huge make over, maybe a new striker, a couple new mids, 2 new CB, a new GK, and then 5 good backup players.... IMO thats reasonable:D

Oh and BTW who knows.... maybe he could end up chugging money into Inter.... man would that be awesome:rockman:

Russian billionaire industrialist Vladimir Potanin dismissed on Sunday a British press report that he was in line to buy into Arsenal.

The Independent on Sunday said Potanin, a metals magnate, was considering investing up to £120million in a new stadium in return for a share of the London club.

'Vladimir Potanin has no plans to acquire any sports clubs whatsoever,' said a spokeswoman for his mining empire's parent company Interros.

A press release by Interros said reports that Potanin was in talks with Arsenal were untrue.

Potanin, a former Russian deputy prime minister, is one of a small group of 'oligarchs' who were awarded multi-billion dollar industrial empires in the privatisation of Russian industry in the 1990s.

Fellow oligarch Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea three months ago, winning the club the nickname 'Chelski' in the British press, and stocking it with top players from around the globe.

The Independent on Sunday said Potanin was an Arsenal fan and had flown to London to see the side play. The club are trying to raise 400 million pounds for a new stadium.

haha! But good try Arsenal fans, for getting your hopes up. Maybe next time. Although many people say that they don't want a billionaire to buy Man Utd, but i don't know why. I would want to see somebody buy United especially from Russia! Just look how Chelsea benefited from that. If i am wrong, then please somebody explain why.

I would like to see him buy Arsenal personally. It wouldn't bother me if the EPL had all the great players because thats the only good Soccer I get on my TV.

I dont think you understand mate. We have some money but we are just putting it all into the stadium to secure our long term future because with United just getting bigger and bigger and Chelsea with unlimited amounts of money in 5 years time there will be no way for us to compete with them. We cant rely on picking up a Sol Campbell or a Kolo Toure for Free.

arsenal fans are not contributing..... there are roughly more than a million gooners fan in england... if they donated £1 a day , they would have accumulated £30 million one month...

Help?
27-10-2003, 07:44:AM
yeah. It's strange that Arsenal have a lot of fans. And any REAL Arsenal fan atleast bought their jersey, so that should be a lot of money for only the jerseys and some buy way more than one, however they still can't raise enough money. I guess everything goes into the wage bills.
